Bloodborne’s limitations inspired Dark Souls 3’s battle styles, says Miyazaki

Dom Reseigh-Lincoln:

"There really is nothing like a good Souls game. All blood, finesse and an endless font of moreish despair. Even with the announcement of Dark Souls 3 and its greater sense of player empowerment and revitalised PvP component, the call of the series is hard to deny for us players. Turns out we're not the only ones. In the latest issue of GamesMaster, series overlord Hidetaka Miyazaki explains the allure of the Dark Souls experience, any why it coaxed him back after working on PS4-exclusive Bloodborne."

"Because of the character of Bloodborne’s gameplay, its battle style, as well as the role-playing elements, it’s limited compared to the Dark Souls franchise," he explains. "It doesn’t necessarily mean Bloodborne was bad. However, while working on [it] I realised, I want to [create] something which has a wide range of battle styles, or features magic, or those things which allow players to wear awesome armour. Those elements are what actually made me come [back] to the Dark Souls franchise."

This is the best piece of news I've read regarding DS3.

Pretty much, confirms to me that Dark Souls 3 will be worth playing.

This is great news, I like BB as much as the next person but I'm still of the opinion Dark souls has more variety and depth - my bug bear was that pvp and co op was awful on BB compared to DS so I hope it fixes this.

I see below a lot of disagrees for people who don't like BB the best, bring on the disagrees :0

I just platinumed BB, and it was the first souls game where I didn't stick around for new game+ (since nothing changes). The melee only play style really grated on me after a while. None of the trophies were particularly hard or time consuming to get, either. It was a strange game for me, since I loved the atmosphere soooo much, but this leet gameplay that everyone kept talking about just felt like what we're getting from DS3 with a melee character.

Oh and coop and PVP were hideously gimped in BB. All that bell ringing and bs for chalice dungeons turned me off any form of random matchmaking (an element of randomness and chance that I love in Souls games). It was the first Souls game that I played entirely solo and that wasn't by choice. Matchmaking was obtuse and unfriendly. I hope From never does anything like that again.

iDadio1162d ago

Agree with just about everything you said, pvp in PVP was basically visceral baiting when you actually got in to a match and co op as you said was very limited. I liked the fast paced nature of it but prefer the souls style of play, a mixture would be great.

Muadiib1162d ago

BB is a dumbed down DS, so this makes sense.

Helios861162d ago (Edited 1162d ago )

While I prefer the style and combat of Bloodborne over Dark Souls, Dark Souls had so much more variety in terms of builds, caster builds, all the different weapons and hybrids of both playstyles in a variety of ways.

I've always had a hard time picking a favorite when it comes to the souls series and Bloodborne. Generally I just love DeS, DS and Bloodborne equally, with Dark Souls 2 as the clear LESSER specimen in the series, with reasons that have been mentioned time and time again.

I'm just damned happy that Miyazaki is back on DS3 and hopefully from the sound of it, it might just be the best of two worlds: Bloodborne and Dark Souls.

Bloodborne is one of my favourite games ever. Above Demon's Souls but just below Dark Souls which is favourite game ever, so Souls series for me, even though Dark Souls 2 sucked.

goldwyncq1162d ago

Bloodborne's not even a series yet.

NeoGamer2321162d ago

So you've played Dark Souls III?

Your opinion is entirely based on playing one of the games and maybe the last generation version of the other.

That is purely a fanboy comment without any basis of fact until after Dark Souls III is released.

KingKelloggTheWH1162d ago

Demons is my favorite, and I love Bloodborne and Dark ( plat for both) I will say Blood is better than Dark.

Cannot wait for Dark3 though!

Praise the sun

Fear the old blood

I'm hyped for Dark Souls 3.

TomatoDragon1162d ago

Well, I've been with the series since day 1 Demons. Loved them all...dark souls 2 a little less, but Bloodborne, I find, has the best gameplay and combat hands down.

Demon's Souls > Bloodborne > Dark Souls > Dark Souls 2

ssj271162d ago (Edited 1162d ago )

Deamon's souls = bloodborne > ds > ds2

Something about the dsrk souls univer art that do not convince me at all. Deamons souls had a better environment art setting and monsters. . It was just more authentic. . Kind of like bloodborne

ocelot071162d ago

Yup both Demon's souls and bloodborne had really interesting enemies and boss battles. Dark Souls 1 was mostly guys in armour with the odd interesting boss. Dark Souls 2 was pretty much guys in armour.

I really hope they make a Demon's Souls 2 or at very least remaster Demon's Souls.

goldwyncq1162d ago (Edited 1162d ago )

Mine's Dark Souls>Bloodborne>Demon&# 39;s Souls>Dark Souls 2

darren_poolies1162d ago (Edited 1162d ago )

Dark Souls > Bloodborne > Demon's Souls >>>>>> Dark Souls 2.

SpinalRemains1381158d ago

U have 2 games in front of Demons Souls.

Furesis1162d ago

what is this? a competition? no one cares what's your favourite souls game

alex1015941162d ago

I agree, I hate the limitations they put on magic in demon souls. I'm a huge magic user and loved Demon Souls with Bloodborne being my best favorite.
