A console is only as good as its games, and the PlayStation had a lot of fantastic ones.
I personally would trade... "crash bandicoot" for "tomb raider" "twisted metal" for "gran tourismo"
*Turismo not Tourismo and yes, agreed. Both Tomb Raider and gran Turismo were more important, at least saleswise for the original Playstation.
Agreed, Gran Turismo is out right revolutionary for the genre. Its a very, very important title in gaming history. GT is a blueprint on how to do sim racers, we didn't have much examples of such things then, they paved the way for many, many racers.
Yeah i was a little hesitant about the spelling but i believe its not a real word anyways. Was under the assumption that it simply means touring anyways.
For me it was: Oddworld Abe's Oddysee and Exoddus Metal Gear Solid Final Fantasy VII Crash Bandicoot Bugs Bunny Lost in Time ^^^ My favorite games on PS1 :)
Crash was the icon for Sony back in the day. But I can't go wrong with Tomb raider. They should've said the top 10 games
5 is small. Think about trying to pick 5 for PS2..
Hmm Twisted Metal Resident Evil Crash Bandicoot Final Fantasy VII Metal Gear Solid Thats a good list, but mine is the Pax Bisonica of important Playstation Games Lists. Street Fighter: The Movie Street Fighter Alpha Street Fighter [email protected] Street Fighter Collection Pocket Fighter Also Street Fighter Alpha 2+3 Street Fighter EX2+ and OF COURSE Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Street Fighter EX Edition.
I would throw one of the Tekken games in too.
I had a choice of ether PS1 or Virtual Boy for my birthday back in the day, and I picked V.B. Wrong Choice
That's because you ask the wrong person to save you.
The 5 most important PS2 games? Grand Theft Auto III Gran Turismo 4 Final Fantasy X Kingdom Hearts God of War those are not my favourite PS2 games but I guess saleswise they were quite important for the console, especially God of War and GTA III
@Hoffman: Replace Kingdom Hearts with Metal Gear Solid 2 and I'll agree 100 percent with your list. I mean, come on, MGS2 was such a big deal that an entire other game sold well solely based on it having a demo of it.
Twisted Metal's great, but the launch window's BIG game was TEKKEN. Edit: Let me elaborate: Tekken was the game that not only showcased how faithful to the arcade games on the PS1 could be, it also established the PS1 could IMPROVE over the arcade. Not only that, it was able to replicate the arcade experience at a MUCH lower price range than, say, the Neo Geo. During that generation, the PS1 was THE system for 3D fighting games, and games like Soul Blade, Tekken 3, Street Fighter EX+A and Rival Schools were loaded with features that the arcade couldn't replicate. I place the death of arcades squarely on the shoulders of the success of Tekken on the PS1.
Being 3D was a huge deal back then. Fighting games were very popular too. People forget the legacy that Tekken was.
King's Field 1 and 2.
Replace Twisted Metal with Gran Turismo & I agree 100%, Crash, RE, MGS & FFVII was all extremely important to the success of the console back then, now if we change the list to TOP 10 then the games I would personally add to the list would be: Tomb Raider TEKKEN 3 Silent Hill Spyro the Dragon Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee Those games sold very well & they were very popular back then they definetely play their part to the succces of PS1.
Twisted Metal was my first PS1 game and i DEMAND a PS4 remake or something. 97-99 were the golden years of gaming. FF7 and FF8 Metal Gear Solid Silent Hill Resident Evil 1,2,3 Gran Turismo 1,2 Legend of Dragoon Twisted Metal 2 I could go on and on, and people question me why i'm a Playstation supporter...
This is actually a very good list on its own. Some of these are not my favorite games, but it makes sense. Metal Gear Solid totally defied conventions of what a game can be. Many games with elaborate stories owe its presence to games like Metal Gear Solid. Twisted Metal showed us that console games can be heavily arena based without much of an emphasis on a single player experience. Final Fantasy VII changed a lot about the JRPG (and RPG) climate. Resident Evil was the first truly horrifying experience on consoles if you ask me. The camera angles, limited saves, music, and difficult controls all worked together to instill a strong sense of fear and vigilance. Crash Bandicoot did a lot to establish and put Naughty Dog in a position to be noticed. I dig this list, for reasons that are different from the author's though.
Crash Bandicoot FF 7 Tomb Raider Resident Evil Gran Turismo
Metal Gear Solid Final Fantasy VIII Resident Evil Silent Hill Quake II Some of my favorites
