Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Review – A Farewell to Arms | The Koalition

Tony Polanco from The Koalition writes:

"Ever since the release of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, series creator Hideo Kojima has said that each installment in the franchise would be his last. It got to a point where it became a running joke, and when he said that Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain would be his final game in the franchise, no one took him seriously. After the fallout he and parent company Konami had however, Kojima’s promised departure from the series has indeed come. Despite the drama, I can think of no better way for Kojima to leave the franchise he created. The Phantom Pain is not only one of the strongest entries in the franchise, but one of the top games of this year."

So far this isn't my fav MGS in terms of story. But when it comes to gameplay, it's hard to find a game that's as addictive as The Phantom Pain.

I agree that the story really wasn't the best in the series, but there were good moments. Mainly the quarantine platform mission of chapter 2, and the "burial" scene that follows. Really shows Big Boss becoming an almost messiah-like leader.

One thing I don't understand though is people saying they feel there's an obvious missing chapter, or that the game's ending is an excuse for a sequel. The last scene of the game EXPLICITLY shows that this is how the events of Metal Gear 1 begin (with the Operation Intrude N3XX cassete tape). The rest of the details are listed in the written chronological events that appear afterwards. The story has come full circle.

The only thing I'm not completely sure of is what happened to the Sahelanthropus. Did it become Metal Gear Rex? Is it the Metal Gear of of MG1 or MG2?

Nothing can ever top MGS3 story wise. That's an unbeatable classic right there.

Hopefully I dive into the game soon. Least Kojima got to finish his vision of this game before his sour departure from Konami.

The title of this review is a bit on the nose.

It has multiple meanings just like "phantom pain" does.

It's still crazy to think that this game would come out the exact same year as The Witcher 3 and Batman: Arkham Knight. Definitely an awesome time to be a gamer.
