Should We Regret The Loss Of MGS As A PlayStation Exclusive?

Metal Gear Solid was once a cornerstone of the PlayStation brand but now that it's a multiplatform IP, some Sony fans feel as if they've lost something.

No. We should be happy that more people get to play the series regardless of their preferred console.

Abash1124d ago

It's not much of a loss when the majority of MGS fans will be playing it on PS4. Same thing with other series like Final Fantasy and Tekken which players prefer to buy for PlayStation because of their history with the brand

suckingeggs1124d ago (Edited 1124d ago )

Who gives a s/*t

Should Nintendo say the same as it started on their console before PlayStation?

it's hideos final metal gear the more people that gets to play it the better..

It's a given it will sell much more on ps4 so I'm sure Sony are happy with their marketing deal, that probably cost alot less than making it a third party exclusive

KwietStorm1124d ago

@suckingeggs

Metal Gear started on MSX, not Nintendo.

NewMonday1124d ago

most of the MGS fans are on PS4 already, not much lost & not much to be gained

freshslicepizza1124d ago

the fact that some people still care about those things even after seeing how well the game is getting scored shows how immature and selfish the user-base still is.

AndrewLB1124d ago

@KwietStorm

I hate to nit-pick but it was MSX2 where the game originated. It was basically a semi-proprietary PC back before manufacturers all got on board with a standardized platform.

itBourne1124d ago

Well Tekken and other fighting games I think are played on Playstation because the xbox d-pad has been atrocious since the first xbox controller.

ShinMaster1124d ago (Edited 1124d ago )

It was never exclusive.

But the PlayStation releases of every main series MGS titles (1,2,3 and 4) have sold more EACH than any other Metal Gear game on any other platform COMBINED.

@suckingeggs

Dude, the Nintendo version was a crappy port. Just bad.
The MSX2 version was the original, sorry.

rodelthegreat1124d ago

@KwietStorm: that is interesting. Does this mean that Metal Gear actually started as a Microsoft exclusive?

Septic1124d ago

Let's be honest here, this is all based on fanboy allegiances as opposed to genuine concerns of which there are very few rational ones.

MGS deserves to be experienced by all and had never been tied to a single platform. It started on msx, then went to Nintendo, it then enjoyed its real boom with PlayStation yes but it appeared on the gamecube as well as Xbox.

So chances are, if you regret MGS going multiplatform, especially when it looks like one of the best mgs EVER made then you're simply a fanboy. I'm sorry.

Genuine-User1124d ago (Edited 1124d ago )

On topic:

I'm not sure why anyone would feel as if they've lost something in regards to Metal Gear Solid. It being available on your console of choice isn't enough?

Spotie1124d ago

@moldy: Which userbase, exactly?

breakpad1124d ago

yes i regret exclusives keep the industry interesting ...multiplatform are not well made and keep industry behind ...i f MGS5 was PS4 exclusive imagine what visuals and features could archive ..also for all the MGS-was-always-multiplatform.. .hey guys MGS4 rises a middle finger

JEECE1124d ago

Exactly. Sony claims they don't buy third party exclusives, but I highly doubt they didn't pay significant money to Konami to get MGS4 as an exclusive. At the time(back when everyone was talking about the doom of the PS3, lol) that might have made sense, but it has since become obvious, based on both last gen and this gen, that most multi-platform Japanese games sell far better on Playstation than Xbox. So why should Sony pay for the exclusive when the game is going to sell primarily on their console anyway?

Examples: http://www.cinemablend.com/... http://www.vgchartz.com/gam...

Lest I be called a fanboy, I'm sure the opposite is probably true for a game like Mass Effect (i.e. MS shouldn't pay for exclusivity because they will get the major sales anyway).

Losing exclusives (for both consoles) does make each less interesting individually. Also, exclusives generate more excitement.

garrettbobbyferguson1123d ago

"Loss"

How is it a loss at all? Two years after the release of the original Metal Gear Solid a PC version was released.

Magicite1124d ago

and what about people who never owned Playstation and didn't get to play exclusive MGS3 and 4? Its the same as Kingdom Hearts going to xbox = makes no sense.

twiggytree121124d ago

MGS4 is the only one with full exclusivity, MGS3 was available on xbox 360 with MGS HD collection.

Irishguy951124d ago

The stupidest thing i've heard in a while. What if someone only owned Ps3 and didn't own Ps1 and 2? What if someone missed Ps3 and went to X360(like most X360 owners I know). Come on now. People who start on playstation doesn't mean they stayed on PS or were there from the start.

just_looken1124d ago (Edited 1124d ago )

Uhh peaople the series was never a exclusive.

Mgs 2 - xbox/xbox 360 ps3 psp vita
Mgs 1 - ps1 pc remaster on gamecube
mgs 3 - Xbox 360 ps3 vita
Mgs4 - ok this stayed with sony
mgs gz - ps4/xbox 1/pc
mgs pp - Ps4/xbox one/pc

Benjammin251124d ago

That's not what people mean. Every Metal Gear Solid title has launched exclusively on a playstation platform. Yes, down the line they may have come to other consoles but they all launched on playstation.

gantarat1124d ago

Mgs 2 release on pc too !

joab7771124d ago

I agree. Amd it's a moot point now b/c Kojima is gone.

showtimefolks1124d ago

no imo 3rd party games shouldn't be exclusives it timed exclusive to any console. the word exclusive give fanboys the wet dreams at night time

but if you are a neutral gamer than all you want is to play the game without caring if it's exclusive to your console of choice or not

amazing games should be played by as many gamers as possible imo

Aceman181124d ago

Don't see why I should I'm still buying it on PS4 next week.

Zjet1124d ago

Exactly this,

Why is console fighting a thing....?

I've always owned the big 3 systems...love them all

It's like when Fuse from Insomniac came out on Xbox 360 as well as PS3 ( highly underrated game btw ) and PS fans raged......More systems = more money = more games to be developed.

Also Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2 were MSX not PS1, Metal Gear Ported to NES, Twin Snakes on Gamecube, Ghost babel GBC and MGS3 on 3DS???

Do people just forget about Twin Snakes or something...?

BVFTW1124d ago

Also, people forget that the first metal gear solid was also available on Windows, it was known as MGS:Integral because it had new features.

miyamoto1124d ago

This article is way way too late.
Twin Snakes people

Sunny_D1124d ago

This. For real this article would be relevant back in 2003.

Testfire1124d ago

@ Maranatha, while I agree that everyone should get to play the series, the fact is the rest of the series is not available outside PlayStation platforms. It doesn't make sense, they should have brought HD remasters of the series to all platforms before release.

assdan1124d ago

Not quite sure why it stayed an exclusive for so long tbh.

Sly-Lupin1123d ago

It didn't. The Metal Gear series was NEVER exclusive. In fact, of the seven main games only one was a platform-exclusive title.

Metal Gear: multiplatform on MSX2 and NES.
Metal Gear 2: multiplatform on MSX2, mobile phone, PS2, Wii, PS3, Xbox2 and PSV.
Metal Gear Solid 1: multiplatform on PS1 and PC; remake on GCN.
Metal Gear Solid 2: multiplatform on PS2, Xbox, PS3 and Xbox2.
Metal Gear Solid 3: multiplatform on PS2, PS3, Xbox2, PSV, and 3DS.
Metal Gear Solid 4: exclusive to PS3.
Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain: multiplatform on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox2 and Xbox3.

And of the 11 spin-off games, only 5 were platform-exclusive.

Metal Gear Ghost Babel: exclusive to the GBC.
Metal Gear Acid 1: exclusive to PSP.
Metal Gear Acid 2: exclusive to PSP.
Metal Gear Portable Ops: exclusive to PSP.
Metal Gear Mobile: multiplatform on Mobile Phone and N-Gage.
Metal Gear Online: multiplatform on PS3 and ARC.
Metal Gear Solid Touch: exclusive to iOS.
Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker: multiplatform on PSP, PS3 and Xbox2.
Metal Gear Solid Social Ops: multiplatform on iOS and Android.
Metal Gear Rising Revengeance: multiplatform on PS3, Xbox2, PC, OSX and Nvidia Shield.
Metal Gear Solid V Ground Zeroes: multiplatform on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox2 and Xbox3.

The series may be associated with the Sony Playstation brand, but it is not and never has been a platform-exclusive series.

Losso-Oso1124d ago

@Maranatha

Exactly! It is a good thing that as many gamers get to play and experience MGSV. Third party exclusives should not exist, third party should remain third parties, they should remain neutral.

Last gen after I switched from 360 to PS3, mainly because I was throwing a temper tantrum, because I had gone through 4 different 360s, 2 of which I had to purchase, 2 got fixed for free by Microsoft, I started to think that the reason why I hated timed exclusives and dlc exclusives was because I secretly felt like I was out of the secret "club" because I no longer had a 360.

But, I still hate it even today, and I only have a PS4, for now, and I am getting all of the DLC first, Destiny gives me timed exclusives for a year, and all of that good stuff, but it still feels wrong.

This type of deals should not exist period. I don't care who started it, I just want that to end.

Now, first party exclusives are a different ball game.

Sheikh Yerbouti1123d ago

Really no reason anyone should be mad about a game going multiplatform unless somehow the quality suffers. That is not an issue any fanboy is privy to.

Going multiplatform means more market and more money. This will in turn increase the future likelihood of more games by the developer. This is a positive to those who love whatever particular game.

MrSwankSinatra1124d ago (Edited 1124d ago )

Nope, it's better that it's multiplatform because more people can experience it. Especially since it's Hideo Kojima's final Metal Gear game.

mochachino1124d ago (Edited 1124d ago )

It's had no impact on my ability to enjoy the game.

I've had every MGS game on every PlayStation system since PS1.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I don't enjoy a game more knowing other people can't play it.

Moreover, I don't realy believe 3rd party exclusives benefit any gamer, including the people getting the exclusive.

First and second party exclusives make sense obviously, but 3rd party exclusives are just companies using their gaming budgets to pay for something we'd already have just so other people can't have it.

OhMyGandhi1124d ago (Edited 1124d ago )

"I've said it before and I'll say it again, I don't enjoy a game more knowing other people can't play it."

One of the best comments I've read on this site.
Totally agree.

mochachino1123d ago

If there was a bubble for "thanks" I'd give it to you. Gave a bubble anyways though. Much appreciated.

2pacalypsenow1124d ago (Edited 1124d ago )

MGS was only ps exclusive for less than 2 years , it came out on PC in 2000 ,.

It's just associated with Playstation because it's where MGS started MG started on Msx but got big with MGS on Playstation , also 99% of all the premium packs and exclusive items are only on Playstation .

Also MGS 4 is still Playstation exclusive so the only place to play the full MGS saga is on Playstation

MrSwankSinatra1124d ago (Edited 1124d ago )

Funny thing is that MGS wasn't even intended for the original PlayStation, but rather the 3DO instead lol.

Off-Topic: Is 2pacalypse Now your favorite Pac album?

BVFTW1124d ago

You can't play the full MGS saga on playstation, you can play all the numbered games but not the full saga. There is the prequel for MGS2, MGS:Mobile for the Ngage, is nitpicking I know! but is true! XD

2pacalypsenow1124d ago

@mrswanksinatra Yes it is

@bvftw and I meant the Canon saga.

Theres also Ghost Babel on the Game Boy , most underrated MGS game

BVFTW1124d ago

Ghost Babel, I love that little game but while Ghost Babel is set in an alternate universe MGS:Mobile is actually a prequel to MGS2, it's still debated if it's canon but it hasn't been refute either nor is set as an implausible event.

mikel10151124d ago

I think we should regret the loss of Metal Gear Solid, period since it's the last real metal gear solid game

aaron58291124d ago

well, kojima did say "last mgs" since, well, forever... so i wont be surprised to see a future metal gear game... metal gear liquid or something, who knows?
