Throwback Thursday: The good, the bad and the ugly of Shenmue

Gamecrate: I remember, quite a long time ago, writing a Throwback Thursday about one of my all-time favorite video games: Yu Suzuki’s Dreamcast epic Shenmue. However, I will admit that article was written from a viewpoint of pure nostalgia, and I always felt deep down that it was a bit unfair to so lavishly praise a game I hadn’t played in such a long time. Fortunately, the recent announcement of Shenmue III gave me the perfect excuse to revisit the original Shenmue in all of its Dreamcast glory. What I discovered during my time revisiting such a cherished part of my childhood was eye-opening: some parts of Shenmue have held up surprisingly well, some have not, and some are so cringe-inducingly bad that I’m amazed I never noticed them back when I was a Shenmue­-obsessed kid.
