See how Gears of War has changed since 2006 debut.
not sure what it is but the darker contrast seems to make the original look better from an art standpoint, but the higher res textures on the remaster are going to be better of course. it seems the original has more detail in those lower res textures, and of course better art design, looks dark where as the remaster looks more softer & cartoony lol
Yeah and some details have been removed/replaced like buildings in the distance or the the tarnished wall with that banner. Also one image in the og had cracked, dilapidated tile and instead of that war-torn look they just put in a blanket, repeating pattern. That said the character models are vastly improved and the remaster looks much, much better in motion.
I noticed those things, plus the sky looks dark & stormy on the 360 vs. Clear blue on the XBO (in my opinion the 360 sky looks better in that aspect)...also the ambient lighting from the gunfire was completely removed for the UE for some reason? I dunno maybe the beta was meant to be fairly rough and a lot of changes will happen but honestly I'd prefer the look of the original. The original really conveys the sense of a warzone while the remaster looks a fair bit more cartoony, like Gears crossed with Team Fortress. The bump in resolution doesn't make up for the wholesale changes on display for my tastes. I'm sure the 60 fps will be nice but visually it seems like they are actively trying to distance themselves from the whole "greys & browns" color palette that games got flak for last gen, but in GoW's defense, they were the originators that everyone else was copying to a lesser extent, so The Coalition should've championed the original assets a little more IMO.
@Deadlead: The changes has been discussed extensively by Rod Ferguson (which was part of GeoW since the beginning) that originally there were technical limitations so Epic had to make it darker to hide that. As the technology improved, they added more and more color to the world and removed that darkness that hid well, the details. I'm glad TC are changing the game more, because I don't want just a 1080p/60fps bump and sell game. BC will take care of most of that for me already. The most exciting thing for me is to enjoy Gears of War on dedicated servers! The experience in Titanfall is just out of this world amazing with Azure so I'm hoping for a repeat. jb227: The more cartoony look is more due to the detail. As you keep dialing in on the details, you get more and more cartoony look, because know you can actually see what is wrong with it. As before you imagined what it would be like. If you just bumped the graphics straight up to 1080p, it would look very flat. "The bump in resolution doesn't make up for the wholesale changes on display for my tastes. I covered the color issue repeatedly, but the darkness was to hide the technical shortcomings at the time. As Epic got better, the world got brighter, more color and more detail. But yeah, the black and grey world was very unique and had a horror feel to it so it is quite fun to go through the entire series to see the changes all the way up to Judgment that had the slightly more cartoony look with lots more detail.
Graphics look very nice. Not sure if the draw distance is drastically improved or they just added a lot more to the city but either way it is impressive.
Yeah looks awesome...this is how you update a classic. Take note SONY! /
Take note Sony? Uncharted collection looks great, wish they had multiplayer, but it looks great nevertheless. I am excited to play this next week. Going to co op the campaign and then get back into the multiplayer.
I think it's honestly two different approaches. The UC collection for instance is being developed by Bluepoint instead of the original ND crew, and I personally applaud their restraint when working w/ someone else's art. When paintings are being restored, we don't want the restorers applying new colors or elements, we want them to bring the original back to life after years of aging. The Coalition are now the rightful owners of the Gears franchise, so they definitely have the right to change whatever they'd like, but in this case i just think it's a step down from the original in terms of overall aesthetic and the atmosphere is totally changed by the texture swaps, the water details, and certain aspects of lighting. At a certain point, additions can be subtractive to the whole experience in terms of visuals. Granted I haven't played through the whole UE to judge whether the Coalitions vision is somehow better than Epic's original work with the title, but there is no denying that there is a fairly drastic difference. If you own the original and just want as many changes as possible to somehow justify your purchase then good on you, but like I said before, if someone remastered the White Album and completely re recorded sections of the songs, I personally know music fans would be really bummed. Gaming fans have this whole competitive angle that skews things, but I'd say if people would let go of those ideas & also let go of this idea of remasters only being valuable if they look absolutely different than the original, regardless of the quality of the end result, they may see the scenario a bit differently. I wonder what Cliff and some of the original Epic members that aren't a part of The Coalition would have to say about the UE.
jb227: If you respect the original too much, it becomes a "port" and that is what Sony's "remasters" feel and appear like. Minimal changes, and a performance boost due to new hardware. I don't want a 1080p/60fps bump alone so I welcome freedom to change it. For instance, the old Gears of War game mechanic is dated by todays standard so I am happy they modified it to make it relevant and fun again. This package is more like a remake than a remaster as all the assets has been redone, sounds re-recorded, cinematics re-imagined to what current technology allows, dedicated servers and added content. Rod Ferguson coverd some of these changes where the darkness you see in origina GeoW is due to inability to add detail at the time or some of the cut-scenes were done a certain way because technology didn't allow you to do that. So I find it quite refreshing that it is a new take with the original purveyor of Gears of War heading this game. We get to see what they wanted it to be instead of a re-hashed 1080p/60fps bump and sell!
i actually thought the top was the remastered and the bottom was the old in the first image until i read otherwisse lol
Sony: "Note to self, Microsoft trying harder to build brand loyalty" (Wipes ass with the note paper.)
@suicideking Not sure what part of my comment insinuated UC Collection wasn't a good update? If you had read my prior comments on UC Collection, you would know that I have applauded Bluepoint games. I only own a PS4 as a current gen system. But, I'm not defending Sony or any console maker just because. You obviously read my comment as a negative, but I see no negative in expecting better. Not entirely sure what a Sony PS4 game has to do with Gears Ultimate Edition. I thought this was an Xbox article? My Bad / ...In any event, I wasn't comparing, merely making a comment fellow gamer.
Looks great and I skipped it last gen so looking forward to playing this gem with what appears to be some great enhancements.
Big difference wish all remaster were like this
True, I think the Uncharted remasters are pretty damn good too (I will also pick that up), can't wait for Tuesday :D.
Hopefully there is an option to make the color look more like the original versions and not the new washed out look.
I doubt it'll look that washed out. It's the screengrabs, PS4 and Xbone captures look horribly washed out everywhere.
Hopefully you're right. The new models and textures look really good though. I just hope it can still have that dark grindhouse look to it like the original does. So what would be the better first game to get for X1 when deciding to get a console? Gears or MC Collection? As far as single player goes.
Which one to buy first for when you get a new console, both would be best as they might drop in price by the time you get console. Only one would depend whether you prefer TPS or FPS really as IMO they are equally good.
Thanks a lot Wolf! This might be the first time I've been able to comment on this website and actually have a civil conversation. :DDD I think I might go with Halo since it won't be coming to PC. But you're right, if both become cheaper, then that sounds like the best plan.
Can't wait for the PC version.
Well you have to.
Looks really good. Character models look much more realistic and it overall looks more cinematic to me.
They've done a really good job with this.
I don't get it. Yes the graphics have been improved as well as the character models. But why does the XB1 version look nice and clean and tidy? Look at the 360 version it's all dark and gritty and looks like there is a war going on. The XB1 version looks like a few teenagers have been up to no good in the neighbourhood.
A bunch of teen punks started yelling "Yolo" and it was the end of the world!
here is someone playing it for the first time http://n4g.com/news/1778294... i think it looks really good from first impressions and really looking forward to buying it next week :)
Its just not as dark and some character models have been improved. Cannot wait :-)
I dont think the pictures justifys how much of a improvment it really is. Cant wait to go back to this!!
Original holds up surprisingly well. Still can't wait for August 25th though.
Preorder from the MS store you'll get a $15 Xbox credit and gears 1-4 free if you play before dec
too bad no microsoft store here where i live.
Order online and have it shipped, that's what I do. I don't wanna jinx myself but I found an exploit of the $15 credit. Idk rather to abuse it or not try and press my luck.
Credit yes, but you get gears 1-4 regardless if where you purchase from.
Nice if the pc version has option for xbox achievements i will double dip again lol.
I 100% agree with jb227 that aint nothin but the truth.the old 360 version looks better to me.the cgs looks better in the remastered.
Shew, I'm glad I'm not crazy here. Beginning to think my eyes must have been deceiving me after seeing so many people gush about how great the new one looked compared to the original
Check these screenshots - http://i.ytimg.com/vi/0zpt9... http://cramgaming.com/wp-co... http://sladee.cwsurf.de/ima... http://sladee.cwsurf.de/ima... Check it..
Its quite remarkable how good the original gears of war still looks. That game is 10 years old

Thanks lol that website was a pain to navigate
This is looking great. I wonder if DigitalFoundry will run a comparison video for this Collection like they did with "Nathan Drake Collection". I'd be curious to hear what praising they would have to say about it. This is a Day One purchase for me no matter what.
I'm such a big fan of Gears, I played to non stop the 360 version and almost got all achievements, then I played the PC version at max settings for months(the multiplayer), I though this would look like the PC version at max settings, but I can see now this devs definitely updated the visuals a lot.
I kinda like the majority of the old ones more.
Same. It has this grave look of a world that's been savaged by 2 long and brutal wars. The new one looks comparatively clean and bright which IMO is a mistake.
She had a monkey face on 360 lol
The new one looks better graphically. But, I like the older, colder tone of the original, maybe it's nostalgia. The odd part are where they completely changed some of the backgrounds, why!?
The textures and lighting seem to be improved and some added items in the surrounding areas but I wasnt half as impressed with these changes as I was with the changes seen in Halo 2 remaster on master chief collection. I will play this for myself since the first gears is the only one I dont own anymore and want to play it again.
First slide is a dark picture and makes it a tough one to judge, but slide 7 is a better example showing the far higher detailed textures. Framerate is much higher in UE also. Still better than nothing I if you just have the 360 version I guess. That said, Gears UE is really the game that will convince me to add a XB1 to sit next to my PS4. I know the XB1's shortcomings, but the holiday deals on XB1 bundles will be too good to pass up for the handful of exclusives like Gears.
I'll be honest i think the original looks better. The quality of the textures is great, but i still like the vibe and atmosphere that the original gives off. If it was combined together than man it would be so sweet. Still awesome that they are remaking the game.
