Bungie Talks AI and Animation

From Eurogamer:

"The next big step for artificial intelligence in games will be making a character walk up to a table and pick up a pencil.

That's according to Bungie AI expert Damian Isla, who told Eurogamer that in his line of work, problems we assume to be easy usually turn out to be "impossibly difficult".

Pick up a pencil? How about a gun and hold the enemy at bay? Enemy AI is one thing but I want them to make your cohorts better when they are CPU controlled.

and they are not the only ones, it's been stated before that when it comes to AI, sometimes the most mundane things can seem impossible to implement.

Speaking as a programmer, I'm not sure what the problem spoken of here is.

Since they're talking about animation I'd assume he's talking about the problem being having an entity correctly move its arm/hand/fingers (and beyond taking into account height) to pick up a pencil located in an arbitrary location accurately.

I'm thinking that the "impossibly difficult" quote and this pencil scenario might be out of context as this is not a challenge far beyond what we're currently seeing in games. Animation adjustments and full programmatic limb movements are already being seen in games like Assassin's Creed and with physics/animation systems like Euphoria. Having a code be able to manipulate a picking up (and perhaps bending down or reaching up) animation so that it ends up at the right place is just the next step beyond that and is far from "impossibly difficult".

Funny, considering Halo 3 has the worst cutscene animations in the industry right now. They're a joke.
