Sony - Home Is For Gaming Not Socialising

Sony is looking to clear the air surrounding their upcoming PS3 online portal, Home. In a presentation given by SCEE's Darren Cairns and Liam Wickham at the Develop Conference event, they have outlined that the focus is on gaming and definitely not on social networking.

You may have come to the conclusion from the screen shots and features let out so far the vision for Home was akin to that of Second Life, but according to Cairns and Wickham it is the furthest thing from their minds. "Home is not a social network - it's focused on games. It's a visual representation of the PlayStation community."

very good.

Playstation Man3401d ago (Edited 3401d ago )

Any comment from Sony on Home to me is just a joke. Does this thing ACTUALLY exist? This is the one product that insults of delays towards the PS3 simply aren't met by any arguement from your's truly. I can't stand behind this thing cause I don't even know where it is anymore.

Being told the release date doesn't matter...come on! I'm probably gonna doubt this thing till the very end. It'll be interesting to see if Sony can deliver. Open beta scheduled for this year? Riiiiight. I doubt it.

Jackthepwnsaur3401d ago

Well im in the beta, so it exists.

HighDefinition3401d ago

How people can complain about delays of something so great, that`s free.

It really is disgusting.

meepmoopmeep3401d ago

i highly doubt i'll be using Home to wander around. i'll drop by friends Homes if they invite me or something but most of the time i'll be checking out the Developer Homes and hopefully the gaming conferences they hope to have so we can attend them via Home.

other than that, i've never really been hyped for it. hopefully they can get it up and public soon for everyone that's crazy for it.

staub913401d ago

I think that it is for both equaly...But no matter this will be amazing when it comes out.

I will wait patiently that way they get it right. I'm look at the first video then the latest.

Home is looking better and better and implementing new functions to it. I'm very pleased.

Here's an idea for you that complian about the release date. Play some games while waiting for it.

juuken3401d ago (Edited 3401d ago )

I believe that. It's only that some want to pass this as a Second Life ripoff.

And Playstation Man, I would rather have this delayed and delivered properly than for it to be rushed and Sony gets stoned by their own fans.

Plus, it's free.

HighDefinition3401d ago (Edited 3401d ago )

Thank you for having some sense, I was losing faith in this place for a minute.

@donator

Thank you.

Complaining about the delay of Home is like complaining about the Red Cross not being able to get to a disaster on time. The complaint is irrational.

Now, if we paid for Home and it got delayed, then you have a right to complain. It would then be like complaining about FEMA not making it fast enough to a disaster, since we pay for it through taxes.

Playstation Man3401d ago (Edited 3401d ago )

They should not have revealed it when they did. This is the one and truly only thing about PS3 that simply angers me. I LOVE PSN free awesomeness, don't get me wrong. But if it wasn't close to being ready to go, they should not have announced this at GDC07. WAY too early.

p.s. Jesus I feel like Breakfast stirring the pot here! Well, I may defend Sony admirably on this site 99% of time, but atleast you now all know one thing about my Sony support that isn't quite there yet. Let's not be too harsh here guys, we're going to have to team up against Crab/Mart/PoG once they're caught trolling again anyways...

HighDefinition3401d ago

So are saying your mad they showed it to you?

Where are you going w/ this? Just stop re-think what you said and move on. Just remember it`s FREE.

juuken3401d ago

But Playstation Man, they thought it was ready back then and they were wrong. Sony has made mistakes back in 2007. I wouldn't let them off the hook with that one. But they're starting to come around and I can't wait to see what they offer.

Don't worry about Home. Hopefully it's in good hands.

Thanks for the bubbles HD.

Playstation Man3401d ago (Edited 3401d ago )

Come on man, as Breakfast pointed out below, delays are not good. 99% of the time (Haze, Lair, Too Human, etc) they result in bad things. Sony showed this to me, yes they did and release dates of fall 07 hit.

We're almost at Fall 08. Remember, this is their answer to XBOX Live. A reassurance for me as a consumer. For me, it's important, free or not. They promised something and DON'T FORGET!!! It may not be free to live up the true experience cause I believe you have to then pay for new clothes and items and stuff right? Don't go too far with that free thing.

It's really like anything, free or not, if you show me something I like, I want it. Sony shows me Home, I like it and they promise me a release. They then fail on that promise and push it back and back and back. They've also made no commitment to releasing it in the future.

It's frustrating as a consumer and hard to justify defending when not even Sony's headmen can back it with concrete release info. Not cool from where I stand as a consumer looking for what they promised me 1.5 years ago. I hope you find some logic in what I'm saying. If you disagree, that's fine. I honestly hope I'm quieted by the awesomeness of Home, really I do. But the question is when and no one can answer that.

SSCOOLCHEA3401d ago

yes home is not here and its been delay . Can you honestly say that it has effected your gaming experienced in anyways right now just because Home is not here . I always tell people wait and you will be rewarded .There's lots of other things to do on the ps3 .

Playstation Man3401d ago (Edited 3401d ago )

I'll go back to playing Soul Calibur 4...Geez!!! lol, I'll keep my inner hatred for the ONE THING Sony is pissing me off with inside. But I'm sure it'll pop up again eventually (I'm guessing when the beta is delayed) and I'm sure I'll get the same reaction...*sigh*

Edit: Kaneda that was classic!

Kaneda3401d ago

I don't know about Home. I was looking forward to it. Then I think about it, do I really want to hang out in the virtual world with 60 guys... It is like going to San Francisco looking for love...

staub913401d ago

I agree with what you say about delays being good...to a point.

In Home's case...Sony is making it much better and more fun, and has new features that I have never dreamed of.(ala Warhawk sand tables)

Delays make Home better.

Delays didn't make Haze better...well I don't think it can be worse anyway.

harrisk9543400d ago

"Most gamers have indicated that they definitely do not want an artificial gateway between them and their gaming. It seems that living rooms hosting movies with your photos hanging up are for real life."

What polls have showed that "most gamers" don't want home. The hype may have died down, but from what I see on these forums and other sites, Home is still highly anticipated. It's just the author's own bias against Home.

Time_Is_On_My_Side3400d ago

Delays don't really mean it's a bad thing Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, or Final Fantasy. Delays actually do the opposite if the developers make due with their time. Even famous XBOX 360 games were delayed as well as Nintendo games like The Legend of Zelda.

SoIid Snake3400d ago

Theyre making progress.

Real gamer 4 life3401d ago

Yea they are, the article say that it still schedule for the fall release this year. I really hope it comes out.

phil23193401d ago

Home unfourtunetly lost all its greatness after was it the third or fourth delay...

HighDefinition3401d ago (Edited 3401d ago )

Delays are GREAT, they make the "product" better. Of course it sucks in a way, but it`s free and it looks to be a great thing in the making.

I can`t wait for the FINAL version.

Breakfast3401d ago

no...

...just no.

What happened to doing things right, and on time?

I dont care who you are, thats just a dumb comment.

HighDefinition3401d ago (Edited 3401d ago )

But delays in the GAMING world always make the final product better than it would have been.

"What happened to doing things right, and on time? "

Making games isn`t like baking a cake, it`s a trial and error process, that causes delays sometimes.

Breakfast3401d ago (Edited 3401d ago )

lol...if it applies to gaming, why shouldnt it apply to everything else, then?

Why dont I show up to work late...it will only make me more alert because im more awake.

Im gonna hand in my assignment late...i wanna improve on it. That dont fly by, does it?

Ask yourself....whats your favourite game.
Now ask yourself if that game was delayed.

Delays means there is something wrong in development. Sure itll make the game better...but why wasnt it good from the beginning? Other development teams can do it...why cant they?

HighDefinition3401d ago

Your examples don`t apply to the field of work I`m talking about.

If My favorite game got delayed.......It did. LBP ....and it`s almost here, in it`s entirity. MGS4 is another example....well worth the wait.

I`m not that impatient just to play something, I want to play it as the best it can be, if that means a delay...so be it.

Time does wonders with games, you`ll learn.

Skerj3401d ago (Edited 3401d ago )

My favorite game is Xenogears and rushed development coupled with a low budget caused the second disc to have less gameplay than it should have had initially. So yes, delays when it comes to games can be a good thing when they're used appropriately. Home isn't out because it's not done, should they release it now or last year they'd have a ton of people running around b*tching about the functions that aren't intact. Think of 2.4 but on a massive scale.

TwissT3401d ago

Haze would like to say hi. :)

HighDefinition3401d ago (Edited 3401d ago )

"Think of 2.4 but on a massive scale"

I`m glad someone understands.

bubbles.

@twist

"Haze would like to say hi"

Do have any idea how much WORSE Haze would have been w/o the delays. Think about it.

@breakfast(below)

I take the Splinter Cell delay as a good thing, I`d rather play a REAL Splinter cell than a AC w/ SC paint. I think you would to.

Breakfast3401d ago (Edited 3401d ago )

I just feel like if there is a delay...then something has been baddly f-ed up, or they need polish. HOME's delay has been going on for a while...which leads me to believe its not, polish, and that something f-ed up.

Take Splinter Cell for example...people arent looking at that delay as a good thing. HOME should be in the same boat.

...short month delays...good
...long delays....someone f-ed up bad.

Haze should have never been released...lol.

Edit @ themyk:

I do talk about Splinter Cell. Alan Wake, i think, is more of a "how the hell are we gonna make this on the 360" type of deal.

Again Short delays are a good thing.
Long delays are a different story....maybe you should read before you write...like the people above me.

themyk3401d ago

what happened to alan wake, what happened to splinter cell.

it's a good thing the 360 hit that launch date on time isn't it.

cause if anything should have been delayed to fix a PROBLEM. i think it was your console.

your point fails.

Breakfast3401d ago

At HD...running out of bubbles? Whats with the edits :P

We obviously i have a difference in opinion. Just as long as you can see where im coming from, im happy.

Delays are annoying. We should leave it at that.

mistertwoturbo3401d ago

I see what breakfast is actually saying though. Delays doesn't necessarily mean "extra polish."

Home's graphics and all that are pretty easy because it's nothing new. But I'm sure they are having more problems trying to figure out all the technical details. Like having thousands of people roaming around the same place.

But other titles like MGS4 definitely improved in polish because of the delay.

Nobody really truely knows why delays happen. Because it's going to be only a title to title basis. One might be delayed due to technical issues, and another might be delayed for extra polish.

But what HD is saying, it's all a pretty moot argument considering that Home is FREE. And complaining about something that is a free service that technically Sony didn't even have to include, is pretty pointless.

HighDefinition3400d ago

What`s done is done.

Tomorrow.

PwnShop3400d ago

Delays are bad if you keep hyping the product, everyone expected home to be finished last year and honestly the novelty of the idea has worn off me. I'm fine with the delay's of Killzone because they never advertised it to come out this year or last year.

wibble3401d ago

What the hell is a "visual representation of the Playstation community"?. Why don't they just make a freaking graph or pie chart?. It'll be a lot cheaper!.

Saying Home isn't for social networking is like building a plane and saying it's not for flying.

I wonder if they'll have 'No Talking!' signs everywhere.

Jackthepwnsaur3401d ago

"What the hell is a "visual representation of the Playstation community?"

what do you do on the PS3? rofl

eagle213401d ago (Edited 3401d ago )

They are just prioritizing. They are saying, "hey, Resistance is just as relelvant as bowling in Home". Don't just think it's about casual everything. The core gamer will be catered to. Sony is a game company and all their games will be the focus as well as any other games.

Home has couches so of course there is socialising. Playing games is a social experience. They want developers to know that games is why we made this.

What's wrong with saying that. What if they said "Home is for socialising, not gaming?" C'mon people.

kewlkat0073401d ago (Edited 3401d ago )

..That doesn't even make sense.

"HOME is a 3-D interactive Social gaming world"

Some will choose to start the PS3 and start their game or download and buy things.

What's the point of HOME again?
