Xbox One ‘Exclusivity’ Titanfall Was Crucial; Dev Wants To Reach As Many Possible With Titanfall 2

Respawn Entertainment founder Vince Zampella on the necessity of Titanfall as console exclusive for the Xbox One. Zampella adds that a lot will be fixed with the release of Titanfall 2 and that he and his team wants as much players possible to enjoy their games.

If that was true they should have released it on all platforms

VER1ON3179d ago

Not really as I think MS offered an amazing deal and as Zampella said the knowledge that they would actually be able to finish the game. If they would have made it multiplat they probably wouldn't have had enough funds in advance.

"Dev Wants To Reach As Many Possible With Titanfall 2" -- aka…Devs want more revenue from Titanfall 2 than they got from Titanfall 1

Eonjay3179d ago

Thats ridiculous. No they keep it exclusive because Microsoft paid them. That raised the profile of the title. EA is the publisher here and they have money. If what you are saying were true, no 3rd party game would ever get made without Sony and Microsoft.

Godmars2903179d ago

Wasn't the game not coming off as finished, the story campaign being worthless, a chief complaint?

dcbronco3179d ago

@Eonjay

You think a company called Respawn, because they had just started over after getting completely screwed by a previous publisher and now are going back to the original publisher they left, might have some reservations about how they deal with publishers in the future. I'm betting Respawn's relationship with EA is a little different than most developers. I would bet EA gets to publish the games and a smaller percentage of the profits in exchange for Respawn getting some financial support but less than usual in order to maintain a higher level of autonomy.

You're mistaking this situation for the typical one were the developer didn't produce one of the most profitable franchises of all time.

DLConspiracy3179d ago (Edited 3179d ago )

@DC bronco

Excellent point.
Vince had been in court for years with tons of fines with the whole Activision fiasco. People think Respawn is this mega developer when in actuality they were starting new with great talent at the wheel. They didn't have all the money they needed. Probably also why EA didn't put more $ into it because of the % they agreed upon.

In the Diary of Respawns "The Final Hours of Titanfall" he talks about waiting and waiting for Sony to get back to them. People online saw his tweet about the deal and assumed it was because he didn't know. When it seems like he was just hoping Sony would get back so they could be multiplat before the final deal. What developer of that caliber wouldn't want to be multiplat? Especially off the back of all these financial issues. In the end they are thankful there was any support. So they are thankful MS helped.

donthate3179d ago (Edited 3179d ago )

There was also the issue of MS offering expertise plus loads of servers from their Cloud.

Sony didn't bother to even respond to Respawn's request.

MS essentially made Titanfall possible. Without MS, the game would have been something completely different, because the economics wouldn't have worked out, let alone the lack of expertise.

This is well documented:

http://www.respawn.com/news...

It is a d@ng good game, so I am happy PS4 owners get to enjoy this sequel.

Pogmathoin3179d ago

In plain english, MS offered them the chance to get the game complete, and Respawn never got a response from Sony...

In plain Sony FB, MS threw money at them to keep it away from the sweet innocent lil FB's....

Kal0psia3179d ago (Edited 3179d ago )

@uptownsoul

Of course they want more revenue for Titanfall 2. Now that they're well established and created what they wanted to create, Titanfall 2 will improve on Titanfall's success.

Point is Microsoft not only funded part of it's development they provided expertise and resource with the new approach in game mechanics in Titanfall.They now have a grasp of it's successes and failure of it's design and maybe will be a great thing for the next iteration all because Microsfot provided the opportunity for a "risky" approach.

It was indeed a small team and they needed the help. This is hoping they do great for Titanfall 2. Titanfall didn't meet the hype but it did establish itself and is a great game.

GameNameFame3178d ago

Funny how Titanfall was only "possible"cause of cloud. Now it is coming to PS4.

Many more technical people have said anyone can do Titanfall Cloud.

Now proof is right there. Whether it is AI or physics, anyone can do it.

It is not some magical cloud. It is just regular dedicated server that pretty much anyone has.

BeefCurtains3178d ago

@Game

Your campaign against the cloud is just sad, my hopes and dreams aren't in the cloud "saving" X1, or that it's some secret sauce. The hope is that it's a generational leap in gaming technology, which it could be and will one day benefit all gaming. Imagine a PS5 that is not bound by the power of its GPU alone? the idea of this cloud tech is much deeper than what you would like to believe, it is not simply a couple of open servers that anyone could employ. A software/hardware giant like Microsoft doesn't invest billions of dollars and years of R&D on something some random TROLL believes Sony could do tomorrow if they chose.

Anyways, Where does it say that TitanFall 2 needs the cloud?

Pogmathoin3178d ago

Many more technical people have said anyone can do Titanfall Cloud.

So, why hasn't Sony done it?

CernaML3178d ago

^Bots have been in playstation multiplayer games already...

BinaryMind3178d ago

EA has already said that the XB1 exclusivity wasn't worth the benefits.

guitarded773178d ago

Titanfall was a mediocre game. Had it not been "exclusive", been from an unknown dev, and not had MS's money backing the advertisement frenzy for the game, it would have fallen flat on its face. Titanfall feels more like a long term giant beta for a potentially good game.

While gamers are passionate and sometimes brutal people, they are also very forgetful, and those who were butt-hurt initially will buy the next game. The dev lost nothing on this deal, but to say it was "Crucial", is just bull spit.

Mr Pumblechook3178d ago

Titanfall 2 going multiformat is a damning indictment of it's underperforming sales on Xbox One.

The exclusive deal made for Titanfall was made before the PS4 leading sales launch and the Xbox One reveal. It was probably made with the belief that the Xbox One would be the market leader - but now we all know things went differently to what was expected...

'Titanfall exclusivity' with hindsight was a mistake because at the time it was released it was only available on the Xbox One which was more expensive because it had the Kinect bundled, so it had very small market share. The game reviewed well but it's success was limited by the boundaries of it's limited audience and this impacted its ability to establish itself as a new franchise in the psyche of gamers.

Titanfall 2 as an XBO exclusive, would be very expensive for Microsoft as they would have to compensate for the loss of potential PS4 sales. Now the game is going multiformat it allows more gamers to experience it and the addition of sales success on PS4 means there can be a Titanfall 3.

WellyUK3178d ago

lol thats BS it was an EA game they have plenty of money...

warczar3178d ago

@BeefCurtains

There were plenty of articles to choose from but this one was full of the most bullshit. Pretty much everyone from respawn said that titanfall wasn't possible without the cloud.

http://www.gamespot.com/art...

BeefCurtains3178d ago

Warzar, I said Titanfall 2. Who announced it couldn't be done without the cloud?

It costs money to make games and release on numerous platforms. Before MS was even a consideration they didn't have the money to complete the game.

Vince has said it numerous different ways. The game would have never been finished had they not received the finances necessary to complete the game. They did ask Sony for that help first I believe. They even hit up Sony again to step in and be apart of it before the MS deal was sealed.

MasterCornholio3179d ago

But then Sony asked for a Vita version of the game instead of a PS4 version.

Kind of an odd thing to do in my opinion.

DLConspiracy3179d ago

@Mastercornholio

Well I've heard it was mostly because of all the secrecy of the PS4 before launch. They didn't want to release the specs and kit to them. Even though their were reports of Respawn working on a PS version of titanfall for consoles ahead of time. I gather that was the PS3? But yeah vita? Who knows.

Captain_TomAN943179d ago

@MasterCornholio

I bet they did it because they knew it would fit on Vita. I mean come on:
-12 player
-No SP so file size can be small

Plus Vita needed another killer app and the founders of COD would have really pushed sales.

grumpygamr3178d ago

I think it hurt them a little as titanfall was a great game. Titanfall didn't get its due. I don't think Respawn had any sign this mess with the Xbox One was going to happen and probably signed on earl(I know, I haven't read the book yet). Remember the miracle cloud from Titanfall and Forza. Sorry went off topic. I think titanfall 2 will put Respawn's Infinity team back in their rightful place as one of the top developers

Not even Microsoft can afford to keep Titanfall 2 away from PS4 with double the instal base

DLConspiracy3179d ago (Edited 3179d ago )

Completely disregard any of the facts above or in the tweets about why MS ended up with it exclusive in the firSt place.

donthate3179d ago

This has already been debunked and exposed as false assumption. This has been stated in an interview:

"Q: Microsoft appears to be doubling-down on its first-party titles while Sony is securing a lot of third-party deals. How difficult is it to be successful, in terms of market share, when Sony is gobbling up so many third-party deals now? How difficult does that make your job?

A: So, they don't "gobble" the deals up. They buy them. You know, I read the same things you do, and I know some people think it's somehow less expensive to sign third-party exclusives if you have a bigger market-share. I can tell you, it has nothing to do with market share.

When you go in to do a deal, with a third party, that third party has its own view of the global market and the value of it. And they should, they should think about their assets and how valuable they are, just like anyone would when they are selling their goods."

http://www.gamespot.com/art...

ShadowWolf7123178d ago

@donthate

Yes, it's been completely debunked because the guy on the losing side of that argument says so.

I totally buy that. Totally. Nothing at ALL to do with the 2:1 install base meaning those deals are cheaper because they'd lose less off exclusivity. Totally.

BitbyDeath3178d ago (Edited 3178d ago )

@donthate, did you notice that the 3rd paragraph contradicts the 2nd paragraph?

I would never support any game that forces me to play online with other people, if your game has no Single-player components or at least off-line mode, I'm not buying it. If all TF2 mods can't be played in Single-player, they can keep on Xbox One as far as I concerned.

XanderZane3178d ago

Hhhmm.. they went to Sony first to get a offer from them. Sony kicked them to the curve, so they went with Microsoft. He already said weren't prepared to release the game on multiple platforms.

psychosmurf1013178d ago

There was way to little of a player base on both consoles back then. They simply would not have made their money back, or would have maybe broke even. The exclusivity deal was in large part I'm sure, to give them at least a starting point of revenue base. They really did need that security to produce the game. Otherwise they are gambling everything.

UKmilitia3178d ago

which basically translates to "we didnt sell enough on xb1"
i though titanfall was good it was just the AI crap that killed it for me.
I hope they make some kind of BF/COD single player or co-op story though.

regarding titanfall 1 i think MS offered to make it THE GAME for xb1 and the amount of advertising etc they gave them its hard to refuse ,plus who could see total domination by Sony? i couldnt at the time and at end of last gen i would of said MS would of destroyed Sony this gen.

showtimefolks3178d ago

EA realized their mistake and want to correct it now. I never get this why did Respawn needed money from MS when they were working under EA's partners program. so EA was funding and publishing

EA thought like many that xbox would be in control of the market even though ps3 outsold xbox 2360 from day one at a much higher price point

Lamboomington3178d ago (Edited 3178d ago )

Development wasn't in a good position to begin with, and Sony wasn't being particularly enthusiastic to talk with Respawn.

Microsoft took initiative in approaching and making a deal.

Also, don't know how many of you realize, but a game across both consoles is a huge deal. It's much harder for the studio. Let them get started on XBONE first. Why not ?

The same reason I'm happy as a PC gamer that Tomb Raider 2 is timed exclusive. It only means that all 3 versions will be really good on the respective platform. As a PC gamer, I'm glad it's coming later, because it means an even better version.

ScorpiusX3178d ago

That's right hate cause I refuse to buy a copy . SSOS .

DougLord3179d ago

MSFT provided a lot of technical and financial support to make Titanfall work. Now the Dev has $$ and knows how to do perfect multiplayer, so they don't need MSFT exclusive. But I wish NSFW would buy the IP or do a similar game with Battletech IP

chrisx3179d ago

If they make titanfall2 with an offline single player mode,I'll give it a try

Volkama3179d ago

Do you only play offline, or will you play multiplayer so long as a single player game is included?

chrisx3179d ago

I only play offline, I hardly play online,just not into it

WellyUK3178d ago

I personally don't want a SP in titanfall 2 and focus on having a content full MP. NO ONE plays shooters like Titanfall for singleplayer, the game is not for you and you should stop trying to force a SP when it's NOT needed. Especially when you say you will only play offline which basically means you will only play for a week and stop, MP is where the replay factor is. A SP on Titanfall 1 would not of made a difference to how quick it fell off the radar as much as you people seem to think it would.

TheGreatGamer3179d ago

I'm happy with Titanfall 2 going multiplat as long as Xbox One gets to use Azure servers just like with Titanfall 1 because those servers were amazing

DLConspiracy3179d ago (Edited 3179d ago )

Dedicated servers are amazing. Regardless of which type. Competitive shooters should all be played on dedicated servers. Always. If it goes peer2peer for Titanfall 2. I am going to be upset.

ScorpiusX3179d ago

Depends on who footing the bill , you think these plats are going to pay for the other to play . Am guess both plats are going to get stuck with EA servers .

Volkama3179d ago

It won't be peer 2 peer. EA host there games properly, unlike Activision.

But there are still reasons to hope for titanfall to be in Azure. The availability and reliability of them is top notch, and geographic coverage is better than EA can offer themselves.

But yeah... So long as they don't "pull a COD" I'll be satisfied.

MasterCornholio3179d ago

Of course it will use dedicated servers.

I mean whats stopping them from doing that?

So there is still hope for all these games.

Chocoburger74d ago

I've completed 5 of the games on the list, but the author forgot to include Advent Rising. It was supposed to be a trilogy, but it bombed hard, and the two sequels never got made. It was Mass Effect, a console generation before Mass Effect.

The game is buggy and unpolished, it needed a few more months of development, but the potential was there. At the end of the game, you have all these super abilities, I remember the stomp attack that created a shockwave being especially powerful.

shinoff218373d ago

I personally think days gone will recieve some sort of sequel at some point. I'm personally also hoping it's not the rumored multiplayer online stuff. I'd think most that enjoyed it would rather thisnto.

Knightofelemia73d ago

Sony needs to dust off Sly Cooper and Days Gone so needs a sequel two of my favorite Sony titles. Bulletstorm I love great game wish it also got a sequel. And I wish Namco would finally give Enslaved a sequel another great game.
