Gaming is at its best when it doesn't stand still and it tries to push things on all kinds of levels.
Without question man.
Genre diversity is the right kind of diversity to be focusing on.
Diversity in all aspects is a good thing.
Because the gen before ruined so many. Narrowed them down to FPS with a focus on real time realism.
Ironic that it's the head of the gaming division that led that push who is now praising diversity.
That was my first thought too. Maybe Phil really is a different breed
Yeah because the last boss had no intention to diversify.
Wasn't going to say as much, but yeah. Though he was only part of things when the "We've Outgrown this" mentality began with the first Xbox (Nevermind where that thinking finally lead). And while I would like to give Spencer more credit than I often do; 1) He's picking up the pieces post launch of the XB0 and the original always online/DRM policies. 2) Xbox fanboys where praising everything Xbox when MS where bending them over backwards with XBL Gold and look where that lead to. But then because Sony as well as 3rd parties jumped on the FPS bandwagon as well, are ever moving towards games as services instead of products, all the blame can't really be put on MS's shoulders. Fans have to take the blame as well since many bought into the crap as well.
Ironic that the best selling and most played titles on PS3 where also FPS games. Even funnier Sony's push this gen for more shooters with marketing, timed DLC and other deals that is making the PS4 console the "dudebro" console of choice, but by all means please reminisce about the past.
Thanks, gangsta. Nobody else ever knew that. Oh, wait. We ALL knew that. Know what the difference is, though? Things OTHER than shooters see success on PlayStation's consoles. That's kinda(definitely, actually) the whole point. Not that shooters don't do well or even the best on PlayStation- something nobody's ever claimed- but that other stuff outside of the most popular franchises and genres are well supported by PlayStation owners. Sony's push, as you say, isn't at all preventing them from supporting less conventional titles like, say No Man's Sky. So, frankly, I don't see what your point was in bringing that up. Oh, wait, there's ONE reason...
Ironic that new management is making changes for a company. Happens all the time.
@Spotie "..them from supporting less conventional titles like, say No Man's Sky." Of course not, since they money-hatted the game so it wouldn't appear on other consoles. Thank goodness that MS has went out and supported other like wise titles like Ion and Elite:Dangerous. How about MS supporting less conventional titles say Ori. "I don't see what your point was in bringing that up." Of course you don't, all you see is Sony doing everything right, even though they are doing and have done everything MS is doing from the beginning. But for some unknown reason you think the head of the gaming division pushed shooters. Exactly what proof do you have that Phil Spencer only pushed for shooters last gen Spotie? Especially when all you guys complained about was this huge focus on the "diversity" of Kinect? "Oh, wait, there's ONE reason..." What ONE reason is that Spotie? Could it be the same reason you came into an Xbox article and commented with no actual proof whatsoever?
"But then because Sony as well as 3rd parties jumped on the FPS bandwagon as well, are ever moving towards games as services instead of products, all the blame can't really be put on MS's shoulders. " "Of course you don't, all you see is Sony doing everything right, even though they are doing and have done everything MS is doing from the beginning. But for some unknown reason you think the head of the gaming division pushed shooters." I have been saying this for the longest time. Its no coincidence that destiny year long time exclusive DLC, A starwars marketing/bundle deal, and the change of hands of COD marketing/timed DLC is a thing. Its no conicidence that sony wanted a deal with the company that made halo. They wanted a halo on PS4. And they wanted to treat it like an exclusive. Just like MS have with COD all these years..which of course leads to COD. None of this is a coincidence. and why not grab starwars while at it? thats a franchised FPS. Its crazy how much of the X360 I see in the PS4.
Go down every path, you'll find every gamer.
Ok so make another Tenchu with open world and Rpg mechanics. Also reboot the Predator Franchise along with Streets of Rage. Problem solved I think. :-)
Another Tenchu sounds perfect. Wonder why nobody thought about this. Maybe its in the works *fingers crossed*
I would love this. Another Tenchu would be awesome.
That's funny coming from him. Xbox is horrible when it comes to diversity. It's a reason it's called the bro shooter console. And their lineup this year shows exactly why...
Halo 5 and Gears remaster? Again, MS pushing down the right path but is met with negativity at every step.... PS4 is the home of COD and Star Wars battlefront.... awesome deals....
Also God of War, Little Big Planet, Ico and MGS. The last something MS wanted so badly they dumped truckloads of cash in front of Kojima just to get him to appear on their stage a few times. Nevermind that originally Halo was already in development when MS bought it, or that Gears for the longest was a 3rd party IP. By all real counts the only thing MS have proven is that since they got into gaming that they could buy rather than make them. That with Bungie buying themselves out from under them while Rare became a shell of itself, that until Spencer took the helm that they couldn't manage studios.
"Also God of War, Little Big Planet, Ico and MGS" Serious, if they were in MS hands, here you would hear nothing but sequel that, milking this......
"Serious, if they were in MS hands, here you would hear nothing but sequel that, milking this..." Actually, since GOW3, before then, people complained about sequels and milking. And if MS had published LBP, which they apparently were offered first, I'm certain that the big issue would have been having to pay for XBL Gold to play user created content. Speaking of which, honest question, what's up with MS's version of LBP: Project Spark? Never hear anything about it.
Why would you hear about and why would you care, right??? Actually, there was news about it recently.... But, its MS and you have no interest in anything MS, yet here you are ......
Phil and team xbox had already done a great job with their lineup already in terms of diversity. 1. OPEN WORLD action game - Dead Rising 3 2. CINEMATIC action game - Ryse 3. Simulation racer - Forza 5,6 4. Opened World racer - Fora Horizon 2 5. Fighting game - killer Instinct 6. RTS - Halo Wars 2 7. FPS - Halo 5, MCC 8. 3rd Person tactical shooter - Gears 4 9. Kids/simulation - Zoo tycoon /Minecraft 10. Opened World RPG - Scalebound 11. SANDBOX cloud 100% destructible action game - Crackdown 12. Action incorporating a TV show game (never done before)- Quantum Break 13. Classic Side Platform - Ori 14. Open World Adventure game - Sea of Thieves 15. Action 3D platformer - Sunset Overdrive 16. Card Battle Action game - Phantom Dust 17. CARTOON animated side scrolled - Cuphead That is just about as diverse a lineup as you can get on any consoles with more to come. Don't know why some still calls it a bro shooter console when they only really are releasing one FPS made for this generation in Halo 5 while having no marketing deals with any other dude bro shooters this holiday. For next year, there are no FPS in their lineup and every game is unique and diverse. Phil really is a man of his words.
Areas where I want MS to pick up the slack: -Massive multiplayer/massive action -RTS -top-down co-op adventure -Poker/casino (Full House Poker backcompat/port) beyond that I find it hard to complain. If MS brings the level of AAA refinement it's known for to an MMOFPS, that would be incredible. An MMOFPS set in the Halo universe would rock my world.
Agreed 100%. Make it happen, Phil.
The 360 era needed this guy, better late than never
He was there just not in charge. If he had been would have been expect to sell Kinect and keep up XBL Gold paywall which only came down, for non-game related stuff anyway, because of the mess the XB0 announcements where. Which he wold have had to defend.
But he was there and in charge of first party. People need to stop acting like this guy is some kind of saint sent from the Gods. He just says the things people want to hear. He is changing because the Xbox One is not selling that well, so he is trying to do/say everything to turn that around. If MS was winning this gen things would've remained the same and everyone knows that.
