Game Informer Review: Soul Calibur IV

Game Informer writes: "I've always loved Soulcalibur's brand of weapon-based one-on-one combat, from its precursor on PSone to the amazing multiplatform sequel and the mediocre third entry on PS2. This latest iteration falls somewhere in the middle of the series' legacy. While it doesn't recreate the finely tuned excellence of Soulcalibur II, it sidesteps many of the issues found in III and adds a ton of single-player depth and lag-free online play. Plus, on an HD display, you really have to see this thing in motion."

8.75 is a pretty accurate score. Honestly i think this is probably the most overrated fighter of all time.

Asurastrike3397d ago

If you agree with its rating, how is it overrated?

The Wood3397d ago (Edited 3397d ago )

now i see that its a simpler games with simpler mechanics. Tekken has always been the better game because of its depth.

Ill still be grabbing this though cause im a fan and have people around a lot that need a bit of humbling every so often. The quest type mode on the early soul edge or calibur was the single player experience that I'd never experienced anywhere else. Having to beat missions and opponents by meeting specific criteria was fresh for me. I had the Japanese so most of the time I had use trial and error just to get through.

they give out high scores a lot.

But I think this game deserves it. Seems like Namco has a winner on its hands.

Its overrated when people call it the greatest fighter out there. Plus 1up gave it A/A+. Thats far too generous. The game is a 9.0 at the very best. 9.1 is pushing it too far.

Combat is far too simplistic and lacks depth. Some characters are fun to fight with though. I really enjoyed using darth vader. Not as a fighting fan but as a star wars fan. Kilik is awesome as always. :)

The environments are also pretty lame.

Asurastrike3397d ago

Sonarus, who cares what it is rated? If you like the game, buy it, if you don't like it, don't buy it. Arguing the difference between a 9.0 and 9.1 is dumb, the true measure of a game is how much enjoyment you are getting out of it.

geda3397d ago

are you kidding me, like 8.75 isn't a good score? that's the equivalent of a 3 1/2 star movie

Whatever, I play fighting games to have fun, not to spend hours memorizing endless strings of combinations. The pick up play aspect of sc is what has always made it the most accessible, and the most fun fighter out there. Its not so user friendly that the more experienced player won't win the majority of the time, and button mashing won't work against a good player, but the controls are so intuitive you don't have to put in tons of memorization time like with virtua fighter and tekken just to be decent at it.

That said, I was a little dissapointed with some of the environments, but the player models are superb, the level of customization is awesome, and the fighting itself is the best i've ever played in a 3d figthing game. I'd give it a 9.0 easy.

I love the pickup and play aspect of this game. Those who put in the time to learn all the moves are still going to win most matches. However, it gives us regular guys a fighting chance and hence makes battles seen more meeningful to both sides instead of a one way slaughter fest. The graphics are also top notch and the basic gameplay is solid. I'm not so sure about the addon stuff in the story mode. I have to play it some more to get an opinion on that.

RecSpec3397d ago

The only thing that bothers me so far is the horrible story mode.

Seriously you could beat each one in 10 minutes or less.

Do not take their reviews as extremely critical in any way, shape, or form.

Their only intent is to increase sales with this publication.

I beg you to stop giving it the accolades it doesn't deserve.

Please divert your attention to SCIV to another more worthy publication's news post about their review of the game.

This game needs to be played with a ps3 controller strickly for the d-pad. Anyway I like the SC series because of the pick up and play-ness of the games, that plus all the extra features that come with the game make this a must buy for me.
