Microsoft: 'our goal right now isn't to do anything else other than support Steam'

Destructoid:

Speaking to PC Gamer, Microsoft had a bit to say about the ol' Games for Windows Live and Steam feud. After shuttering the former down in favor of not screwing over its consumers with a bad service, they quickly shifted gears into Windows 10, and evidently, Steam.

Steam is the number 1 gaming service so its good that they are seeing this and trying to help rather than compete which would be stupid

Septic1145d ago

Indeed. Now give us steam on xbox one!

Thunder_G0d_Bane1145d ago

Lool I don't think it would ever be that simple. Xbox one is not a PC and doesn't work like a PC.

Haru1145d ago

We need more xbox exclusives like Forza and halo on steam!

donthate1145d ago

I don't think I want Steam on Xbox One. I want some of the Steam features on Xbox One, but offered by MS. I don't want a lot of different online stores (even though that might bring some competition to it).

What I want is Xbox Live and Xbox One like features across PC games. A unified system. I don't care if MS or Valve does it, but that somebody does it.

Aim for:

* unified voice/chat service
* ease of use (i.e. patching & etc)
* compatibility

If people want to tweak or whatever, that is their thing, but make those three priorities and I will strongly consider my PC a lot more. Otherwise it is taking the backseat like it has so far despite its advantages.

AngelicIceDiamond1145d ago

Left 4 Dead 3 PC crossplay with X1. Its just asking for it at this point.

freshslicepizza1145d ago

microsoft cannot compete with steam just like how windows phones cannot compete with iphones and androids. this is why they will work with them. what microsoft hopes to do however is get consumers to buy games through the windows store. buying games through steam gives valve 30% revenue of each purchase. i have no idea what microsoft gets selling games on windows and xbox live but it's probably something.

Mark my words, that's exactly what they're going to try to do, eventually.

My guess is MS wants a free version of XBL for PC that integrates with Steam. If Steam doesn't play fair they're going to try to build their own service, and since they have such a huge following, exclusives, and so much pull among developers they're going to be the first real competitor to Steam.

We'll see, but that's my guess as to part of the reason why they're pushing for PC so hard.

The other part is to gain more software sales, since PS4 is likely to runaway with this gen.

And finally their next console is pretty much going to be a steambox, with off the shelf parts with some minor hardware tweaks, where both can share the same library, the only difference is XB4 games would be optimized better for their dedicated hardware.

Seafort1145d ago

I'm sorry but Microsoft doesn't have that much pull among developers. They pay them off. That's the only thing MS understands.

They can try and compete with Steam but they will fail like they did last time with Game for Windows Live.

They haven't done a damn thing for PC gaming since they launched the Xbox a decade ago and now they are trying to claw their way back into PC gaming via Windows 10.

Not going to happen. DX12 is a great API but MS have a long way to go before I and many other PC gamers believe they want to support PC gaming again.

I think that is a reasonable assesment. However, I get the feeling that Valve will not play fair and MS will not have any choice.

I think MS is pushing gaming on PC, because that is one advantage that Android cannot take a foothold in as easily. For most desktop like software day-to-day, it can and is slowly being replaced with Android devices.

Gaming is also a past-time that will continue to grow in popularity.

@Seafort:

"I'm sorry but Microsoft doesn't have that much pull among developers. They pay them off. That's the only thing MS understands."

I don't know of many talented developers that would work for free, so yes money is always a big issue regardless of that coming from profits or from a company supporting them like MS.

"Not going to happen. DX12 is a great API but MS have a long way to go before I and many other PC gamers believe they want to support PC gaming again."

Too late!

MS already have DX12, it is showing incredible gains and free Windows 10 is irresistible. Devs are talking about making DX12 the standard across their development portfolio.

Topple that with MS pushing their first party games onto Windows 10 and the shift is already starting enmasse. DX12 hasn't even been released yet....

"They haven't done a damn thing for PC gaming since they launched the Xbox a decade ago"

uhhmmmm... DX12?

Just by massively supporting gaming in Windows 10 is huge.

I just don't see the type of push that MS does with DX12, happening on the Linux/Mac side of things.

Seafort1145d ago

@donthate

In 12 years they've done maybe 1 or 2 things to support PC gaming. The rest has been to hinder PC gaming like G4WL and Windows 8.

Windows 7 and Windows 10 were the 2 things and you think that's good enough?

The only reason people are moving Windows 10 is because it's free otherwise it would be a slow adoption rate like Windows 8 was.

DX12 supports their console as well so it's not all for PC gaming either.

They need to bring some of their first party games like Halo or Forza to PC so people know they are serious about supporting PC gaming again or GTFO.

Truthandreason1145d ago

If they build their own service I hope they call it games for windows live....oh wait.

If MS tried to compete with steam, they would lose miserably to be honest.

* I could see STEAM shipping with the next Xbox console that includes Windows 10 & Plays Xbox & PC Games.

Steam baby! Can't wait for Fallout 4, MGSV, SFV, and No Man Sky to come out for Steam. And if somehow MS worked out a deal to allow Steam games on XB1 via Windows 10 app...that would absolutely be the biggest Megaton known to mankind.

Long shot but hey, never say never.

With Xbox One getting keyboard and mouse support the whole Steam on X1 could be a possibility. Or maybe even cross play with Steam users is something MS might consider.

Frinker1145d ago

Wish EA would put their games back on Steam. Do the realize they're losing sales?

ThunderPulse1145d ago

I don't buy EA games on PC because of it.

Frinker1145d ago (Edited 1145d ago )

Same here actually, despite Ubisoft pushing Uplay like Origin they least they still put their games on Steam

SniperControl1145d ago

Real stupid move by ea, but what do you expect from such a greedy company, i now only buy pre-owned ea games on PS4, that way they dont get a single penny of mine, alot of my PC friends do the same.
Sure i have to wait a couple of months after release, but that's the way it is.
Their origin service is a total disgrace, charging up to £20 extra for new PC games.

_-EDMIX-_1145d ago

Well...not really. I mean though I feel they might be losing a bit of sales, when it comes down to it, if you want the game your going to put up with Origin.

I only have BF friends on Origin, I don't log in it every day like Steam, I don't check it for sales often, its just a way for me to play BF3, Sims 4 etc.

I don't really think about it.

Though Steam is nice with many community features, those are merely nice features, they don't make the game for me lol

Of course I would pick Steam over Origin any day of the week, but I would over all pick GAMES over any platform any day of the week.

One doesn't need to convince a gamer to play a game they want.

I agree they are losing some, but not enough to really make them go back.

I think its makes great business sense for them to have Origin. They don't have to pay the same cost that they would have with Steam and gamers will likely play it any where its put up.

Chinkyinc181145d ago

Origin refund policy was most likely the reason Steam updated their policy to be more competitive. Funny thing is, I have never had a problem with Uplay or Origin, so I dunno. Plus, Origin gives away a game (yea, they're old, but FREE) per month; if this caused Steam to due the same, another win for competition! Free market competitions, baby!!!

JasonKCK1145d ago

"Wish EA would put their games back on Steam. Do the realize they're losing sales?"

Actually no, EA just announced a few days ago that they make more money from PC.

Xbox one should add Steam so Sony follows..

DanteVFenris6661145d ago

Sorry to be the barrier of bad news. But steam will never appear on either console. Why you may ask? Why would either company want another digital store on their system. That could cut their profits in half or more seeing as how aggressive steam is with prices. Both Sony and Xbox have a monopoly on their digital stores. Why would they want to add competition within their own system?

peshkavusCA1145d ago

Would attract more console buyers though..

_-EDMIX-_1145d ago

@Dante- Agreed.

I don't even fully get what is being asked? Steam is a service for PC titles....

PSN and XBL are for those respective consoles.

How would Steam even work in that regard if they are offering versions of games on console...on another system that already has such a thing set up?

Do folks not get that those steam sales are set by publisher? Valve doesn't just make those?

They might have a date for a sale, but the don't set those prices.

So the concept of Steam on console literally doesn't make sense, its not as if publishers would even do sales on PSN or XBL based on such a thing happening.

Consider again that publishers ok those discounts and set those prices to begin with.

Steam won't be on console for the same reason Wal Mart doesn't have a Publix in it lol

Vegamyster1145d ago

@peshkavusCA

Software is what makes Microsoft & Sony the big bucks, Steam takes a good chunk of the percentage of game sales and they offer much bigger and better sales throughout the year compared to Live/PS so i can't see MS/Sony willing to have such a big competitor on there own system, then there's the Steam Machines/OS that Valves pushing.

GUTZnPAPERCUTZ1145d ago

Am I the only one excited about the future potential of running HTML5 games on X1 via Windows 10?
