Microsoft announces first official 2TB external HDD

Destructoid:

"The Xbox One's onboard 500GB limit is woeful. After Wolfenstein hit, games reached the critcal mass of 40GB for the average AAA title, which cleaned out my space in seconds. Publishers are now expanding upon their planned obsolescence strategy (buy the new™ Xbox with more space later!) with external drives."

I already have a 4TB attached to my 1TB console. But I would buy one of these xbox branded drives to compliment. Think I will actually. :)

AKR1105d ago

I guess you intend to download every title released; AAA, indie and demos - past, present, and future.

Wish I could blow cash as carefree as that.

FlexLuger1105d ago

@AKR

I have had my X1 since april, and I have 258GB left on my 1TB. 42 games. I dont like to delete stuff. My 4TB is still blank but I want one of these. Not sure why I got so many disagrees. Can I not do what I want with my own money that I work hard for now, N4G? lol

"Wish I could blow cash as carefree as that."

Games are my cheap hobby. I spend FAR more on music tech, my PCs, clothes, my car and holidays. Not saying im wealthy or anything...But Im doing okay. I work hard and my pay reflects that. ;)

????

It's not going to take much. Hell with last gen games I have more then that used with my Steam account.

This gen games are much bigger.

50-100 GB's per game. That's what they are going to be.

Do the math, even 6 TB's gives you room for less then 60-120 games. If you buy 10 games a year for the next 7 years, you're right there. I mean bigger games, not the indies. But....

Add in the Games for Gold.

Add in media downloads, including future 4k media downloads...

You start to see the point.

Someone could buy about 1/10th of 1 percent of what will be on the store and still go through 10 TB's over the next 6-7 years.

Absolutely knowable, but both consoles put in 500GB's to start.

Don't forget the Xbox 360 started with 20GB's, and ended with 500. That's 25x more.

@JMC- I agree. But that is really only if you factor if one only downloads games. That is sorta their issue to deal with, that is not all gamers this gen. Thus, Sony nor MS have any ode to some how make 3TB or 4TB versions of their systems based on "some" gamers.

I personally don't download much, I'm actually only downloading PSN Plus games currently and smaller titles that only have digital versions, like Everybody Gone To The Rapture.

But for the most part, I buy disk based. I'm done with Knack, Infamous, Killzone, FF Type Zero, Destiny....sigh garbage game, etc I just delete the install, it takes a very short time to reinstall them and my saves and content is still there so it doesn't really effect me as much.

I'm rarely going to just be playing like 6 games at once LOL! I only really play at most 3 games at once.

Witcher 1

Persona 3

Bravely Default

Now...none of those are even on PS4, I've yet to play 2 games at once on PS4 besides BF4 MP after a deep single player session on a PS4 game like Evil Within, The Last Of Us etc.

So most times it just makes sense to just always have a MP game installed like BF4, along with the current game your finishing.

Mind you, I got a 2TB hdd not long ago, yet I still have over 1.6TB of free space, lots of that space I can still get rid of many installs of games I"m currently not even playing. I think I still have a install of COD Ghost when I got it for free at PS4's launch lol. Mind you, I sold that game a month after I got it...for free.

(might need to delete that today lol)

I like the fact MS also gave us the option to use our own HDD on XB1 as well unlike the X360 in which you have no choice but to buy the MS branded HDD. It is all an option and MS sure is giving us options in this generation.

_-EDMIX-_1105d ago

LMFAO! If they did, why can't you remove the hdd and buy your own?

Yet... I can in PS3 and PS4?

http://www.amazon.com/Seaga...

The deep, deep lolz.

Now we know why they closed off the HDD all together, it was to lock out gamers from doing it themselves and to sell you their junk.

I'd rather just get a bigger on somewhere else as suppose to buying MS's and Seagates version.

Funny thing as Seagate has a 4TB version for the same price....too funny.

So XONE can't do what PS3 can do with removable hdds? Yet PS3 and PS4 can? Yet PC can?

Sounds like MS doesn't want XONE owners having much choice, they want you having limited options apparently.

Rookie_Monster1105d ago (Edited 1105d ago )

LOL, what are you talking about, I am currently using a WD 2tb external drive I bought for $60 with my XB1. LOL, research the meaning of choice and option before commenting please. smh

Lets put it this way, with a 2tb of external HDD I am using with my XB1, it adds 500gb of extra free space with my system simply by still having that internal HDD there and I can swap out my external HDD for another one or use the other 2 additional USB3 port to add more drives if I ever run out of space. WIth BC and all these amazing XB1 games coming in 2015 and 2016, surely I will need multiple drives. :)

On my PS4, what happen if my installed 2tb drive ran out of space? Swap it out and replace with a bigger internal drive and make the old drive obsolete and redownload all my digital contents, firmware, and install all my games again? Lucky me, my PS4 doesn't have BC and I don't have many games for it as of today so this won't be an issue for awhile.

hmmm, which one seems more logical and gives players more choices? also speaking of option, I can carry my portable external HDD in my pocket and go to my friends house and play my games or share my games with them instantly on their XB1. Can you do that with internal HDD?

LOL, patiently awaiting your reply. I am sure there won't be one. ;)

"LMFAO! If they did, why can't you remove the hdd and buy your own?"

What's the difference if you can just buy your own external HDD?

"Now we know why they closed off the HDD all together, it was to lock out gamers from doing it themselves and to sell you their junk."

But...you don't have to buy their branded external HDD, you can buy whatever brand you want. How is that locking gamers out?

_-EDMIX-_1105d ago (Edited 1105d ago )

@G-red. ""LMFAO! If they did, why can't you remove the hdd and buy your own?"

What's the difference if you can just buy your own external HDD?"

Choice. Its an option that makes sense and could be done right now on PC, PS3 and PS4. As to why MS won't allow it is beyond me.

Its start to get more clear as MS teaming up to make their own external hdd now is starting to show why they didn't allow you to remove it.

They want to sell you their own versions.

Typical MS.

"But...you don't have to buy their branded external HDD"

You don't, but clearly you need to buy an external hdd as suppose to just allowing for the internal hdd to be removed.

I won't just be gaming with a huge external on my desk lol

I'll wait until they finally make a sku that allows for it to be removed. I prefer to have an internal hdd as suppose to a lost USB port and wasting the life of an external because a company does't know how to design a system.

Yet in 2006 PS3 allowed for removal of the HDD...

MS is very much purposely doing this.

@ Rookie, no.....most just don't care about your post thats all.

:so if you remove the internal HDD, you don't need to buy another internal HDD to replace the one you had just removed as well?" I mean...are you so slow you don't get that removing it is to replace it? wow..I need to say that to you? Well I guess I do, you only know of external hdds on your disk taking up heat and space, your not about that internal hdd replacement life lol.

And your statement also makes no sense, never did I say you can't use another company's external lol, its why I even linked a 4TB cheaper one!

You really need to read a bit clearer bud.

Rookie_Monster1105d ago (Edited 1105d ago )

@EDMIX,

I was right, you have no answer to my reply and purposely avoiding it. LOL

"You don't, but clearly you need to buy an external hdd as suppose to just allowing for the internal hdd to be removed."

Hmmm, so if you remove the internal HDD, you don't need to buy another internal HDDto replace the one you had just removed as well? What kind of logic is that? LOL

"I won't just be gaming with a huge external on my desk lol "

LOL, my portable external HDD sits behind my XB1 in the back and out of sight and out of mind. You don't put them on a desk to be seen...well for most people anyways. LOL

The only time I'll remove my external HDD is to transport all my games to my friends house and play it there without the need for reinstalling games or redownloading digital contents and games. How is that for option of using your own external HDD vs unportable internal HDD? ;0

Edit at EDMIX reply,

"@ Rookie, no.....most just don't care about your post thats all."

If you truly don't care, then why did you replied to my initial posting then. So you do care. ;)

"I mean...are you so slow you don't get that removing it is to replace it? wow..I need to say that to you?"
LOL at the spin and replay that make no sense whatsoever. so replacing an internal HDD means one or two thing. You either have to buy a new HDD to replace it or you are using one that you already have to replace it with...which also required previously $$$ to get either way. So isn't that the same as if I already have an external HDD already, I can't use that and have to ABSOLUTELY have to buy another external HDD?

Game, set, and Match. The End

freshslicepizza1105d ago (Edited 1105d ago )

@_-EDMIX-
"LMFAO! If they did, why can't you remove the hdd and buy your own?
Yet... I can in PS3 and PS4?"

but can you add an external which is far easier and can go up to 16gb?

"Now we know why they closed off the HDD all together, it was to lock out gamers from doing it themselves and to sell you their junk."

what's the reasoning sony doesn't allow you to store your games on an external hard drive?

"Funny thing as Seagate has a 4TB version for the same price....too funny."

and you can buy cheaper memory cards than what sony sells vita memory cards but are you able to use them like you are able to use after market external hard drives on the xbox one?

"So XONE can't do what PS3 can do with removable hdds? Yet PS3 and PS4 can? Yet PC can?"

yet sony won't allow to store games on an external hard drive and nintendo will not allow an internal hard drive to be changed either. so who is really offering choices that cover all options?

Septic1105d ago

Eh?? Microsoft's choice is FAR superior to the internal hd only support on the PS4.

Plug in an external hdd of your choice. Simple. Done. Notforcing you to open up the friggin console!

/Facepalm

gangsta_red1105d ago (Edited 1105d ago )

@E-mix

"They want to sell you their own versions.

Typical MS."

Yes...I understand this. But what I don't understand is why you think MS isn't giving you any options or a choice? You have the option of NOT buying their own branded external HDD so you do have an option.

Just like you have the option to buy another HDD for your PS4 and PC.

"You don't, but clearly you need to buy an external hdd as suppose to just allowing for the internal hdd to be removed."

What's the difference? Maybe you could explain why this is such a problem? How is this any different than swapping out an internal HDD for PS4? You're not making any valid points with your statements.

"I won't just be gaming with a huge external on my desk lol"

But don't you have loads of shelf space for all your older gaming consoles that you pack and unpack periodically?

I see you in a lot of BC articles claiming that very thing. That shelf space is not a problem for you and shouldn't be a problem for others...so why is it a problem to have this on your desk?

How about put it behind your desk?

Septic1105d ago

Ahahaha! Oh my days...the hypocrisy of it all. Don't worry, he'll get an external hdd.....for his PC...

Cut the foreplay MS and just hit us with an official 4 or 6TB external HDD...for cheap.

Seriously though, 1TB, 2TB, that's crap especially if you're trying to promote DVR, more games and now BC games coming too.
