Phil Spencer is preparing for Gamescom after a few days in Shanghai for ChinaJoy, but he still took the time to provide the fans with a few interesting answers.
This is probably the most interesting one of the bunch: https://twitter.com/XboxP3/... In my opinion, MS will release the successor to the Xbox One in (my guess) 2019 and this will be 100% backwards compatible with your Xbox One games day one and all you're purchasing is the hardware upgrade.
If consoles keep being based on a quasi-PC architecture, I definitely can see back compat becoming a standard across the board. And honestly I don't see any reason whatsoever to base consoles on any other architecture, nowadays.
@TheGreatGamer Xbox Two confirmed. QB will blow our minds http://www.timeanddate.com/... @Abriael "I definitely can see back compat becoming a standard across the board" Agreed. It should be that way.
Now that Xbox is a full on x86 device (again..remember the OG xbox was X86, aswell) and I think its a given that MS next console will again be X86, I think BC is here to stay on xbox platforms. Next gen it will be there day one. I also expect the next box to be the most powerful of next gen. Especially if there is any truth to MS buying out AMD...
@flex ''I also expect the next box to be the most powerful of next gen. Especially if there is any truth to MS buying out AMD'' Why does it matter if Microsoft buys AMD? do you realy think AMD will make PS5 weaker just because they're owned by Microsoft? Sony designs the chip themselves and anyways if Microsoft really buys AMD Sony wil just go with Nvidia or Intel next gen and make PS5 stronger than anything AMD can produce
Haru: "Why does it matter if Microsoft buys AMD? do you realy think AMD will make PS5 weaker just because they're owned by Microsoft?" No, but Sony would likely be forced to go with Nvidia instead which would likely raise their cost. For MS, the benefit would be a much tighter coupling between hardware and software increasing efficiency. "Sony designs the chip themselves" Sony does minimal changes to chip design even with the Cell, IBM did most of the heavy lifting. MS makes far more customization than Sony, and that is quite visible in the Xbox One compared to PS4. That is also why MS acquistion of AMD would make so much sense for MS. "and anyways if Microsoft really buys AMD Sony wil just go with Nvidia or Intel next gen and make PS5 stronger than anything AMD can produce" The benefit of a MS/AMD would be expertise in both software and hardware, thus making it likely to yield very efficient designs. The problem with Intel and Nvidia is the high cost, which means the chips has to be reduced to compete with MS. That means lower performance for the next PS5 unless Sony wants to spend significantly more than MS on each console. That said, we actually don't know if AMD is being bought by MS.
Lol @ Donthate "Sony does minimal changes to chip design even with the Cell, IBM did most of the heavy lifting. MS makes far more customization than Sony, and that is quite visible in the Xbox One compared to PS4. " By far more customization, you mean just weaker PC components with not real customization? With GDDR5 ram and hUMA, PS4 really takes the cake in terms of customization. Even Sony said they considered DDR+Esram option before they went ahead with GDDR, but decided to pass due to its huge limitations. Given how so many devs are having problem with X1 ram, customization/Move Engine were lacking and poor. This has been proven over and over from devs themselves. @Flex Whether MS buys out AMD or not. Not sure how you come to conclusion X2 will be strongest. When last 10 years, Xbox brand had weaker console.
"Why does it matter if Microsoft buys AMD? do you realy think AMD will make PS5 weaker just because they're owned by Microsoft?" I never mentioned sony. Insecure, much? It doesnt matter if they do, but for the sake of weighing up their potential future, these things have to be mentioned. That is my only reason for bringing it up. it doesnt 'matter'...but that rumour is doing the rounds..again. But lets talk about that a bit more. Historically Ms have always spent more on hardware R&D than sony. Much of XB1s budget went into kinect 2.0, and the gamble of trying to get every xbox owner to have one. Had MS not made that mistake, then, for sure the XB1 would have been the more powerful console. the first xbox was more powerful than PS2. X360 had the more powerful GPU than PS3 inspite of being older. XB1 was the anomily in that trend. And it wont be repeated next console cycle. Factor in the growing importance of the xbox to MS larger plans, and its reasonable to assume that next round they will have the more powerful console regardless of an AMD aqusition. But such a purchase would accelerate the synergy between the hardware/dev tools and OS. MS would not be spending R&D cost externally or paying royalties on hardware..or an X86 licence, which they would need to continue operating AMD as a hardware firm. All those savings that come with an aquisition would be deployed into the hardware development. It might be above sony's paygrade to build something that matches the specs at the same price point. They will have the less powerful console next time regardless of MS buying AMD or not. Especially nowadays, given their financial situation as a whole. "Sony designs the chip themselves" Sony designed Cell with IBM. They have not made a GPU since the PS2 days. What part of that jaguar APU that is also used in XB1 did sony design? Name a single chip on the PS4 that sony designed, in the way of graphics, processing or audio performance. Even the USB ports are an off the shelf job. I could actually build a PS4 with off the shelf parts from a pc sales specialist. "and anyways if Microsoft really buys AMD Sony wil just go with Nvidia or Intel next gen and make PS5 stronger than anything AMD can produce" Aside from the fact that I doubt sony could afford to build it? intel chips are not cheap. Neither are Nvidia. Sony dont use Nvidia anymore for this same reason. So a descent intel chip will be out of their price range too. Thats why they have never used them before, and even the vastly more wealthy MS didnt use them a second time in the X360. That leaves ARM for the CPU and an off the shelf AMD card that they would customize themselves. @GameNameFame "Whether MS buys out AMD or not. Not sure how you come to conclusion X2 will be strongest. When last 10 years, Xbox brand had weaker console." lol..really? And yet the X360 constantly outperformed the PS3 in multiplats. Must have something to do with the fact that the X360 had the better GPU, shooting your assumption that it was the 'weaker' hardware squarely in the eyes. also... "With GDDR5 ram and hUMA, PS4 really takes the cake in terms of customization." GDDR has been around for years and HUMA is an AMD tech that can be applied to any compliant AMD device. Hardly custom to the PS4. "Given how so many devs are having problem with X1 ram, customization/Move Engine were lacking and poor. This has been proven over and over from devs themselves. " That is the nature of truly custom hardware. Any dev who ever worked on the saturns dual CPU set up or sony's emotion engine..or cell, will agree. Though I agree ESRAM seems to be more trouble than MS intended it to be.
Neither sony nor ms will release another console until at least 2025 is my prediction.
2025? I'm sorry but you have to be joking, right? PC is improving every year at an unprecedented rate, if Consoles want to at least be comparable they will release new ones by 2020.
They cant do 100% now so what makes you think it will be 100% day one on the next console. It comes down to developers allowing it and if it doesn't end up being all its made out to be on xbone and Microsoft dont see its viability just like last gen then there might not even be backwards compatibly on their next console.
Now that's I want to see.
Yeah I was really hoping the ps4 would play all the play station home systems games and I was also hoping the Xbox one played xbox and 360 games but what ms did I'm all for. I should not have to pay to play my old games that I own on my ps4 I hate it so much. Then people say o keep your ps3 hooked up yeah that means my ps2 there not much room under my tv lol hello I wish the Wii u played gamecube games. I really hope me let's me play Xbox games on my Xbox one that would be great.
"I should not have to pay to play my old games" You don't have to if you keep your old system. Why is this so hard for people to understand. And don't give me this bs about space, people can make space. The truth is that people jut want to be able to sell their old systems so they can make the money of it. And emulation doesn't always work right. Just look at the 360s emulation, it didn't even emulate half the games and a lot that were supposed to work were buggy as hell. And the X1 emulator is only a 100 games at most thus far. And already games are running worst and having issues. So you will not be getting full emulation just another half a$s attempt, like on the 360 one.
Backward compatability isn't even released yet, and you can't help but slate it. That screams of butthurt.
I have all my old systems I said that about I just hate having them all hooked up I own every system have over 5000 games.
And you using the term "butthurt" screams of immaturity. So now giving a factual opinion is considered acting "butthurt" by you fanboys? You're the one lashing out at me. You're the one acting "butthurt". And the emulator is already shown to not be perfect, but you honestly think it will be. How naïve.
I'm hoping Tenchu Z will be backwards compatible.
Quantum Break release date incoming?! I can't wait. Gamescom is going to be absolutely spectacular. Truthfully I believe that it will be a better conference for Microsoft than E3 was.
i think xbox will learn from lots from this gen. but the most important lesson will be specs gamers will throw everything out the window for specs
I find myself spending less time on Xbox One simply because of the lack of custom soundtracks. I have high hopes that it gets implemented eventually. Listening to my own tunes while playing was an escape the 360 and OGXbox offered that I just don't get out of the X1. Sure it's okay to run around on Tamriel with their soundtrack but I need my metal for long hauls. I have the Xbox One and I'm still feeling underwhelmed by what it offers. I guess it just goes to show how great last generation was.
Love the subtle hints at an Xbox One successor. Last gen was too long, 5 years for tech is a lifetime. Would love to see a new Xbox announced in 2018 and release in 2019. Learn from your mistakes this gen, focus on building your first party lineup, and then repeat what gave you success with the 360, launch it earlier than the competition, force Sony's hand. Because let's face it, Sony won't want to launch a PS4 success because it's doing well. Sort of how Nintendo dragged their feet with a Wii successor, and Microsoft probably didn't want to release a 360 successor when they did.
as long as the best games are BC then that's all that matters
