Before moving on to Uncharted and The Last of Us, Naughty Dog considered the idea of rebooting the Jak and Daxter franchise with a more realistic approach, in a PS3 title tentatively named Jak 4 or Jak and Daxter 4.
WTH happened to jak in that art?? he looks too serious and "military" for a J&D game.
That was the direction they were going in before canceling the game. It was a reboot with a more realistic feel.
Naughty Dog should still give Jak & Daxter another try, it's long overdue to get a new game in the series and the PS4 feels like the perfect platform to do a new one for
Yeah, not sure about the main pic. I love J&D, such a varied mix of game mechanics and excellent characters/script! More 'realistic' I can deal with, but that picture and the 'blue steel' expression on Jak's face is not floating my boat. Still, that's the beauty of concept art - it's just a concept and often not the final product. While I'm sure a lot of the work they did could still be used if they picked the franchise up again, there are new people at ND now that will make new judgements and decisions. Either way, PLEASE #BringBackJak!
well, if that's the case, I'm glad they cancelled it - as a long time J&D fan - that art is not what I'd expect from one of those games.
The graphics and art style can't match the actual tone of the game. The post-dystopian world drastically altered from a colorful and rich setting, then moved to a Mad Max-type world with a lot happening in the plot. But Naughty Dog managed to make it great. They don't know how, but they did. That's why Jak 4 can't happen. They have no idea how to do it
It almost makes me glad we never saw a Jak 4. Almost. I'd take almost any "grimdark" nonsense if it meant we'd have had the more open platforming of Jak than the super-linear stuff we got in Uncharted.
Me too. This is not the fell and art direction of the Jak I know. Maybe that is why it got cancelled.
Well...the series was getting darker with every installment. This was the unfortunate logical conclusion, if you ask me.
Yeah. It was pretty weird. The opening to Jak 2 feels like a parody.
I want a new jak game but please don't make it some serious mad dude. jak series is about friendship and fun.
I couldn't agree more!
Intriged how there's a beauful grass land art with a established town which is open and has no huge walls like a fotress I thought the world had become darker and almost in ruin with the Metal Head war or something. Since they looked at changing the cartoon like style of the game to something more realistic I don't see why they don't just start from the beginning and do a "re imaging" of the games. Something like Ratchet and Clank is doing. So maybe after a re imaging of the first game the ending is differnt and they don't open the gate getting sucked into the future. Like it doesn't work They could just travel to a new city (Haven't) on the other side of the world since could tell a similar story. A continent at war with the Metal Heads and is rich with tecnology. It means we can stay longer in the past where the world is more green and colourful
What's with this realistic obsession? For Uncharted and TLoU I get it and I love those games, but A Jak looking realistic is just as bad as Mario looking realistic. Please ND take notes from what your old competitor and friend Insomniac is doing with R&G. Game looks pixar quality. That's the graphic vision a future Jak and Daxter game, possible, should have
what cancel a game and how do you kill it. always the cool stuff falls victim. http://media.giphy.com/medi...
You all know this game is coming, when it does the internet breaks and society will collapse, I will be the happiest man alive
These are just concepts they looked into before making uncharted, the ND artbook has these near the back in the undeveloped project section. I think the devs themsleves realized that the ultra realistic jak was weird and didnt quite work
Would you guys be okay with having another dev handle jak 4, similar to sanzaru and sly cooper, or do you think jak amd dax needs to stay in NDs hands?
Already happened and it was garbage. It must be naughty dog to be done right but unfortunately they don't give a damn about Jak anymore, just Nathan Drake...
Cant say i agree with your opionion of Sly Cooper Thieves in Time, but i do agree that Jak and Dax should stay in NDs hands. If ND were to develop a new jak and dax would you prefer level design similar to precursor legacy or more open world like jak 2 and 3?
I believe Airyck was referring to "jak and daxter the lost frontier" developed for the PSP by High Impact Games. Not a terrible game, but the spirit/charm of the franchise was missing.
The Jak series was soo much better than uncharted and tlou imo. Instead of this realistic approach crap I wish they would just give us a true Jak game for PS4.
I think your going a little to far with statement I would love a new jak game although i haven't played pass jak2. Uncharted and TLOA are good games in their own ways.
I prefer the original art for the series.
That looks terrible imo.
Why such a big change i wonder i know they have stated before they have grown since crash or jak but why sale yourself so short . I don't understand these companies who just abandon these ips
Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder.
Beautiful Art? Looks more like Generic Art to me.
Jak looks weird but HOLY SHIT...that environment looks amazing. Jak 4 is still a game I need to happen. It's at the top of my most wanted list now that KH3 is a thing.
you need to play jak3.....fun and challenging - I loved the end cutscene too!
Loved the environment concept art, but Jak himself looks horrendous. I am thoroughly relieved that they cancelled this game, if this was supposed to be the new look for it. Jak 1 and 3 were incredible, the second iteration went way too dark and became too grim, and felt incredibly out of place within the trilogy. I am now expecting cancelled Banjo and Kazooie artwork from Rare. Banjo standing at a three quarter angle under florescent lights (inside an interrogation room possibly?), wearing a form fitting leather jacket, a scar above his eye, and head shaven to near baldness. One hand barely fits into his leather pants, the other hangs freely, bruises can be seen on his knuckles. Encrusted blood on his lip indicates he was in a fight, and it is uncertain if he had won or lost. One of his eyes is bruised and swollen. Kazooie, with her overdone makeup, pushup bra showing through a short tank, thong appearing from her overly tight booty shorts (don't ask) and a red rag wrapped around her head, holding a switch blade and a tilting her head to the side, showcasing an intricate prison tattoo that she is all too proud of, and giving the viewer a deadly serious expression.
no wonder they cancelled it. That look nothing like Jak.
This franchise needs to stay cartoony. Stick to its roots. They need to understand their market with this franchise. Yes, we've all grown up, but we want to feel the same way we did when playing the first installment. That is, after all, why we want a new J&D game.
This could have worked. the Jak and Daxter series evolved into a darker and more serious franchise but still with comedic and cartoony aspects. They would have been able to retain the charcters personalities with this artstyle. Daxter would be like Rocket racoon from guardians of the Galaxy: a realistic film that still manages to be funny and have "cartoony elements". Thats what this game could have been - a ncie balance of relaism and cartooniness which was what ND were already doing on Ps2 with J and D.
Lol. This would have not been received too well. Though I must admit that the "realistic jak" in terms of looks doesnt look all too bad considering its supposed to look realistic.
I bet there are tons of different stylized concept arts for JAK4. Thats how concepts work. They create hundreds of them and decide what works and what doesnt.
I am glad they dropped and cancelled it and made TLOU instead.
Jak needs to stay cartoony as a reminder that Naughty Dog can still maintain different art styles
That castle looks awesome
I really hope this is their next title after Uncharted 4.
