What if Hideo Kojima – the biggest ‘free agent’ in gaming today – teamed up with Nintendo? The result would be exciting, to say the least.
I already want Metroid to come out to give me another reason to buy a Wii-U since the new Starfox looks abysmal. If Kojima worked on Metroid, I would be so happy...
very unlikely ..Kojima is more of a Sony fan (and there he has its incomparable big fanbase/install base) ...we ve seen older tries of Nintendo to near him but with terrible results ..like Twin Snakes on Gamecube (nearly ruined the whole franchise with that not-Kojima-made abomination
I do see him more likely doing something with Sony and if he did hook up with Nin if would be for the NX not the Wii-U
They also have completely conflicting ideas of what makes a game.
What was bad about twin snakes???
Twin Snakes was a classic, get over yourself.
Other than some slightly over the top cutscenes ... I don't see what was wrong with Twin Snakes. It was a great update to the original.
nintendo is dead to me. i would hate to see what became of kojima if he joined them.
So what you're saying is... no matter how brilliant of a game he made for a Nintendo console, you would never buy it? Ladies and gentlemen, this is everything wrong with "gamers" these days. People care more about brands than developers and games.
If he did go to Nintendo you might start to like them. That is the biggest reason for Nintendo to employ him. So, that gamer that hate Nintendo might change their tune. He would make Nintendo more balanced that's for sure.
@ Grape maybe Kojima san tired making open world games, now ready for Metroid/Castlevania type games now . one can hope right?
I think 100-1 it too good of odds. This would be a dream come true, but it will never happen.
Yeah, if Kojima was to team up with anyone it would be Sony just because of the long history and close ties. I think that following the release of MGS5 there's a 50/50 chance of whether he continues making games or retires however, since a lot of his comments over the year prior to his media blackout seemed to imply that he wasn't really interesting in staying in game development anyways. I think we'll find out what's going on in 2016 after he's left Konami. He's either gonna form a new studio and work under Sony or just leave the industry entirely. I really can't see him working with anyone else in Japan or being able to secure the funding he needs from other publishers either. There is the wildcard option of Microsoft giving him a ridiculous deal since they're the only ones who could really afford it (and Xbox really needs something major like that) but I still can't see him going with anyone other than Sony. I know it might pain some people to hear it but I honestly think working under Nintendo would be the death of his career, he'd fade into obscurity putting out Nintendo games in my opinion.
It's a little naive to say Sony is the only company he could secure funding with. He's a pretty renowned developer and even if he couldn't find another Japanese publisher/developer to work with, he has the experience he could EASILY start his own studio. Also, since Snake is a pastiche of action movie heroes, predominately western ones, it's conceivable that he would work with a Western Studio. He certainly has the renown to find someone that's willing to let him make what he wants. Honestly, though, it wouldn't surprise me if, like you said, he left gaming (at least for now.) Maybe he'll try his hand in movies, since he's had an interest n them in the past.
Yeah, I get what you mean but thought Sony was most likely since they're in Japan and there aren't really any other Japanese publishers that could fund his work as far as I know? Capcom etc. are all struggling these days, so I figure Sony are the only ones in Japan who have the cash to set him up. I always figured they'd give him a team at Japan Studio and leave him to quietly work away, kinda like Team ICO in the same building and the other team that did a lot of work on Bloodborne. Looking to the West you have the obvious giants like EA, Activision, Ubisoft and Microsoft but I dunno, I can't see the guy leaving Japan or staying in Japan but working for a foreign publisher. I could be wrong but what I know of social/business traditions there it just doesn't seem like the kind of thing he'd do. I really don't think companies like EA would be willing to give him the funding he needed either, and it's a safe bet they'd give him less creative freedom than Konami did. Of course, it's all just wild speculation at this point and we could all end up being completely wrong and surprised by something unexpected. He could even just fly off the radar completely and we never hear from him again.
Money talks and can make people turn on their friends & family. So, anything is possible. If I was to bet my money though, it would be on Sony. Just the thought of Kojima working for Nintendo. IMO Would be great for Nintendo and their fans. Crimzon you would hate it, especially if KoJima makes games that are better on Nintendo than the past Sony games. The balance Kojima would bring to Nintendo would make it harder for people to continue to hate Nintendo. In the end it doesn't matter to me. As I have all consoles and can't wait of the NX.

I'll keep waiting...and dreaming for this.
i already mentioned this a few weeks ago. i think it would be a great move on nintendo's part
Why would they team up? It doesn't work for Nintendo because their audience doesn't buy 3rd party games. Period. Especially not of the type that Kojima makes. It doesn't work for Kojima because he wants to work on powerful hardware and at the same time, reach a large audience. Two strikes right there as Nintendo hardware is weak and has the lowest install base. Just because Nintendo and Kojima are big names doesn't mean it's a match made in heaven.
So he should work on PC? And frankly, you're blind if you haven't seen what Nintendo's capable of producing from their machines in the past.
I don't think it is necessarily that Nintendo fans don't buy third party games. But rather that the Nintendo fans that DO love third party games knows that Nintendo systems haven't had reliable 3rd party games since the SNES thus those Nintendo fans that do want third party games are multiconsole/PC owners. If you are a Nintendo fan and love third party games ... I am sure you own a Playstation, X-Box, Gaming PC or a combination of the three. The LAST TIME Nintendo had good third party support was the SNES. That was a LONG LONG time ago.
Not likely to happen, he is more likely to join Sony as he is a known fan and has a long standing relationship with them.
I think it is a better chance he goes indie and makes small downloadable games, since the Japanese games market isn't looking to make any drastic turn arounds.
Or he can continue to make big games and sell the game ... you know .... worldwide. Just a thought.
What if, dude, what if.
Yeah but Kojima doesn't like making kids games
i would hate this move TBH I love Nintendo and i love kojima I do not want them together if i had a choice
Still would not play his games.
That title almost gave me a heart attack.
No, that would be awful.
Metal Mario Sunshine!
It would have to be on a new console, no way Kojima puts his creative side back in the box because of weaker hardware. That said, IF the NX is a console and decently powered, then why not? Afterall the original Metal Gear was on the NES, and I remember it fondly.
He didn't work on the NES port though. Ya see that's the problem. Both the original MGS games were developed by Kojima for the MSX/2 consoles and ported by a separate team at Konami (just like Twin Snakes). He's publicly shown his disdain for all the various Nintendo ports at various times in his career. This is a great hypothetical question and fun to speculate on but frankly, next to Kojima joining MS, is probably the least likely scenario occurring.
I want to see what Kojima can do as an indie developer, where he can do WHATEVER he wants
Thank God it will not happen! Kojima never would do well with a company that is restricted regarding adult content. Nintendo and Kojima are not compatible
Kojima is a Sony fanboy worse than most blind fanboys. He wouldn't work for Nintendo in a million years.
"So what you're saying is... no matter how brilliant of a game he made for a Nintendo console, you would never buy it? Ladies and gentlemen, this is everything wrong with "gamers" these days. People care more about brands than developers and games." You were looking down on someone for being more loyal to a brand than games in general. Then posted this crap, people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. Or at the very least drop the bullshit moral high ground act.
I stand by both statements. The reply was true. However, this is also true. Kojima would never work with Nintendo.
it would suck totally, lastgen tech, no sales.......RIP kojima productions
Every time Kojima makes a game he pushes the hardware to it's absolute limits and then once the game is complete he complains the hardware wasn't powerful enough to realise his original vision, so why would he side with a company that consistently makes the weakest hardware of all the manufacturers? I understand this is just fantasy, but at least fantasise about something realistic, like Sony/Microsoft/even Steam might take him on
It will be interesting to see where he ends up when his contract ends. If he wants to continue in the video game industry then he would likely stay in Japan as the majority of the Kojipro team is Japanese, as are their families. I personally think he would might choose to set up an independent studio, but I'm sure SONY would definitely make him an offer.
Twin Snakes is my favorite Metal Gear game so this would be awesome if he collaborated with Nintendo again.
