Roving Rogue - Wii U Review | Chalgyr's Game Room

Chalgyr's Game Room writes:

Every now and then there’s something that comes along and takes me pleasantly by surprise. After landing on my desk, I figured that I was in for a good time with a solid platformer in Roving Rogue. This was especially so as my Wii U which doesn’t see much action of late other than a Mario Kart or Smash Brothers night here and there. Now I had an idea as to what I could expect going into things, but Instead of simply being a platformer in which our Rogue runs around teleporting across various stages, there is more than enough humor inserted in one of the weirdest ways that I’ve ever seen in a game.

Roving Rogue starts at the end. Quite literally, the end of the game. Having forgotten as to why things turned out the way they have our Rogue goes about retracing his steps through the various chapters and stages to find out why he just stabbed someone in the back. This is where things get good as nothing is given to you.

Roving Rogue Review | Gaming Nexus

GN:
Most video games have a set beginning and an end. Sure, you have puzzle games, arcade games, and games like Borderlands that can keep going even after the final boss is dead, but when it comes to older games and those styled after retro games, the goal is to get from start to finish. Ever wonder what would happen if instead you had to get from finish to start? Honestly, neither have I, but that’s pretty much what we’re getting into with Roving Rogue.

Roving Rogue Review | Gamer Headlines

Do you ever wish that you could vanish in a puff of smoke, only to reappear a short distance ahead of where you originally stood? The good ol’ Nightcrawler teleportation gag would be pretty neat to have, wouldn’t it? When this teleportation mechanic is the backbone of an Action-Platformer, what you get is Roving Rogue on the Wii U.

Roving Rogue Review | Hardcore Gamer

Roving Rogue takes the 2D platformer and twists the formula instantly to such a degree that you can’t help but love it. Its story begins at the end, with you killing the last boss and getting the end credits alongside “A Winner is You” and then the story begins properly since your character can’t remember anything. He has no idea why he just killed that dude, so the goal then becomes to unravel who you are and why you’re doing what you’re doing. Kurt the Righteous can jump and most importantly, teleport. Teleportation isn’t something often seen in platformers, so it’s nice to have here.
