John Carmack 'regrets missing the iPhone launch'

Founder of id Software and game engine mechanic extraordinaire, John Carmack, has spoken to Forbes about his vision for the iPhone's potential.

"The iPhone, as a device, is in the same generation power-wise as the PS2 or Xbox," Carmack says. "The graphics are a little lower but the RAM is a lot higher. You could easily spend $10 million on an iPhone game, but the market just can't support that yet."

Good stuff I wouldn't mind an id game on the iPhone :) Make it snappy Carmack! Though don't give us Doom RPG or Orcs & Elves... I want something you didn't put out on mobile yet

To be honest I'd be happy with Doom RPG, though I agree something new would be preferable.

I don't understand why any developer would sink money into developing for the iPhone in lieu of the DS or PSP. They are estimating about 15,000,000 sales of the iPhone by end of '08. Compare that to over 40,000,000 PSP's in that same timeframe and close to 90,000,000 DS's.

Take that 15,000,000 and how many are gamers? How many really want a game on their phone? Anyone who owns a DS or PSP DOES want games or they wouldn't have bought a gaming machine.

Well yes and no. Plenty of devs have gotten their buck back with the mobile game business and even with 40 million PSP units out there some devs are still not making PSP games as they are not selling. Sure some of those iPhone users aren't going to buy games but the ones that do could make up for those who don't.

Carmack isn't going to spend massive amounts of money on an iPhone game but it'll still be worthwhile and something fun for a new device out there. People will buy stuff on the new things just to see how they do and if it's done well then more will buy later down the road.
