It's a lot more than just a game

The sunset gleams over the waterfront Oakwood apartment complex in Marina del Rey, as the vacationing twenty-somethings meander passed the harbor to Abbot Kinney Boulevard to begin a weekend worth the inevitable Saturday morning hangover.

And Yfran Garcia is alone in a side room banging away at a controller, a computer the only source of light, trying desperately to execute a perfect corner kick or shore up his defensive shape in FIFA 08.

"Instead of going out to the bars or going out to the parties with my friends, I'm working hard and getting better," said Garcia, a 20-year-old Sloatsburg resident. "I'm skipping my Friday night to play competitively, just like other top athletes would."
