GameSpy: Kevin Unangst on Games for Windows LIVE

This week at Microsoft's Gamefest 2008 developer conference, the Games for Windows group dropped the bomb: Effective immediately, Games for Windows - LIVE would drop the confusing tiered membership system and go completely free.

Belated as the company was in aligning itself with the prevailing paradigm, it would be silly to discount Games for Windows' presence as an online network. As suggested by the Xbox Live announcements at last week's E3, the monolithic software company is capable of forward-looking moves -- GameSpy point you to the fact that you'll be able to watch Netflix on your Xbox later this year as evidence.
