Sony's Shuhei Yoshida reacts to the 'Nintendo PlayStation'

Not long after our last intimate chat with Shuhei Yoshida, the President of Sony Computer Entertainment's Worldwide Studios at E3, a Redditor managed to dig up a prototype of the never-released "Nintendo PlayStation" that eventually led to the birth of Sony's very own gaming console. Naturally, when we caught up with Shuhei-san again at a Project Morpheus event in Hong Kong, we showed him our article on the priceless gem and asked for his thoughts.

Nintendo had the virtual boy, gamecube, wii u which were all failures but Nintendo making the decision to abandon sony and the Nintendo play station is the biggest mistake they ever made. Now sony playstation 4 is the best platform for gaming and it has been that way since ps1 while Nintendo home consoles have been seeing a lot of failures for over two decades.

I prefer the freedom of pc and the potential for having a powerful hardware but hate most of the negative issues of pc gaming. I dislike lack of software optimization, lack of games that take advantage of a powerful pc, running mostly console game specs, lack of exclusive games, pc gamers not supporting game devs by buying games,a lot of pc gamers waiting for game sales and other issues. Ps4 is the number one platform for playing games right now.

I would say calling their newest platform Wii U was their worst mistake.

GranTurismoFan1110d ago

Agreed, WiiU is just a cringeworthy name

Er no Nintendo dropping Sony wasnt a mistake . No one in their right mind would give as much control as Sony wanted in a joint venture . of course Sony had their right to defend their grounds and gain as much as possible , but an agreement clearly wasnt possible .

The mistakes were in nintendo's own choices for their following consoles and their relationships with 3rd parties .

Besides the "snes cd" wouldnt be anything close to the ps1 ( the RISC processor that "made the psx wa only developped after the partnership broke out , same goes for the the n64's from Nintendo) , and might have been a flop instead . In fact the closest thing to what Nintendo wanted happened with the CDI and philips , a massive flop .

Had the sony nintendo venture worked out , we wouldnt have know the same strategy and titles from the playstation and n64 era , and i'm not sure we'd win out

Wow the Sony fanboyism is strong with this one.

Nintendo did not, do not and will never need Sony. Nintendo have pioneered majority of the things you love in gaming today.

Spotie1110d ago

What does he love in gaming?

Angeljuice1110d ago

Name a single thing that Nintendo invented (not the usual bs that is associated with them despite being used before such as motion control, analogue sticks etc).

Thunder_G0d_Bane1110d ago

1) Vibration in pads to add immersion to games. Nintendo brought the rumble packs they never existed before then.

2) Splitscreen multiplayer shooters - Goldeneye again Nintendo kicked it off.

3) More recently Motion control - Hi PS Move & Kinect -

rdgneoz31110d ago

1) N64 had the first console force feedback. PCs had it long before.

2) Goldeneye was developed by a 2nd party dev team, which is how MS was able to purchase them.

3) PS2 had the EyeToy long before the Wii came out. - released in 2003
vs - released in 2006

@ Thunder_G0d_Bane

Nintendo needed Sony.
Open up your SNES. Sony made the sound chip that everyone loves and it was designed by the creator of the PlayStation.

They needed a CD based console to keep up. But they made mistakes. The N64 came out and games that were originally planned for that console switched to the PS1 because of the limitation of the N64 and its 64mbs. Also, the CD-i exists.

Not only was force feedback around in gaming prior to the N64, but Sony released the Dual Analog Controller which had built-in rumble motors, not an attachment, at the same time as the Rumble Pak. Some regions, including NA, did not include that feature though. And the controller was short lived to make way for the first DualShock controller.

Arcades used motion controls before the Wii.

Thumb sticks also existed before the N64.

You tried to call out fanboys but you sound like a big one yourself.

Antifan1110d ago

Like the new Metroid Federation game?
Or maybe that new Starfox game coming for the gamecu...ah.. I mean Wii U?
Or maybe that awesome gamepad tablet that simulates mobile gaming.

I'm glad they split, more options for us gamers.

dumahim1110d ago

Even if the Nintendo Play Station became a thing, I don't think the partnership would have lasted.

GranTurismoFan1110d ago

Gamecube was a failure? God I LOVED my GameCube man

godmachine1110d ago

im a nintendo fan but no it was not ...SOMEONE REAL STUPID at NINTENDO wouldve given every sale of cd format games and use of there ips to sony not nintendo so they stabbed the whole project in the back by joining with phillips at the same time as sony just so sony would be pissed enough to get out of the contract with instead sony waited and released psone themselves and pounded nintendos face in for several generations
Honestly sony wouldnt have touched video games if not for nintendo so really we should be happy it happened

FarEastOrient1110d ago

Your sense of history is screwed up. Sony wanted to make parts for game consoles, the board had no belief in game consoles as a platform (example sound chip for SNES). After the backstab of Nintendo to Sony, Sega of America wanted to contract Sony to build the Sega CD console. Hence Sony's first developed and published games showed up on a Sega CD. Sega Japan said no to any further development with Sony even though they were already paying royalties for Cd format. Sony than realeased PSX after Sega Japan made their decision.

WickedLester1110d ago

The decision to stick with cartridges on the N64 instead of using CD-ROM was their biggest mistake IMO. It basically caused them to lose Squaresoft, which cost them Final Fantasy, which cost them Japan.

Of course Shu would say "Somehow, I think it's more fun to keep it kind of a mystery."

deathtok1110d ago

Didn't the guy that posted this later admit this was a fake?

TXIDarkAvenger1110d ago (Edited 1110d ago )

Nah, someone said they made it but later said they were just joking.

KryptoniteTail1110d ago

So, this confirms consoles exist, and run games, potentially exclusives. If I get rich I will find these and everything related.

FallenAngel19841110d ago

Thanks to Nintendo's decision, they indirectly created PlayStation which in turn indirectly created Xbox.

deathtok1110d ago

Which in turn created the Netflix Maisha. Once 2023 hits you're going to love it!!

godmachine1110d ago

segas fallout created xbox
