Star Wars Battlefront on PS4 shows huge promise - but needs work

Digital Foundry:

With a show of work-in-progress gameplay footage - as captured from PlayStation 4 - Star Wars Battlefront's E3 demo was a genuine highlight of this year's event. Unlike its earlier April reveal (set to a woodland battle on Endor), it's also a far more realistic take on what to expect of PS4's multiplayer; a continuous run of on-foot and vehicular action around the snowy tundra of Hoth. But for all its flair, does it stack up to the game's impressive earlier reveal - and how is performance shaping up?

Looks absolutely fantastic but DICE needs to work on that fluctuating frame-rate. Either Keep it above 45fps or lock it to 30.

BecauseImBatman1136d ago

Wow. It does look great and I really did not expect this title to be running at 60 fps (well not locked but that is the target). For the most part I'm pretty impressed if they can optimize the performance without any downgrades I'd be very happy to get this on my PS4 come November.

Looks like according to DF, this game as well as Halo 5 has work to do to stay CONSISTENTLY at 60fps on the console..... That's a nice goal but really isn't all that important at the end of the day.... As long as both games come close to 60, no one will really know the difference (between 50 and 60).. . Main thing is that both games are fun as hell to play. And if Battlefront is ANYTHING like the Alpha test that we've been playing, it's going to be awesome..

inveni01135d ago

What? It needs work? Oh, that must be why it hasn't come out yet. /s

Trust me, from the beauty and fun of playing the Battlefront Alpha, you very rarely notice frame drops at all... I'm guessing Halo 5 will be the same way, even though DF wrote a similar article about its frame rates as well..

falviousuk1135d ago

Why did you not just say the same thing when you were talking about exactly the same thing in the Halo 5 article. What a difference someones comments make when you have either xbox or PS4 in the title.

Hypocrisy much.

Genuine-User1135d ago (Edited 1135d ago )

I genuinely forgot to quote some of the stuff. There's no ill intention involved.

I did however comment on the fluctuating frame-rate; and added my opinion.

Finally, Halo 5, at least in my opinion doesn't look that good; graphically speaking of course.
Gameplay will most probably be as good if not better than previous iterations, but graphics are the least promising aspect of Halo 5.

I agree. If it's still running in the 40s (fps) after further development and optimization then they should just cap it at 30fps. A highly variable framerate like that looks terrible and makes the controller response feel janky and uneven.

It really needs to be running at between about 60fps and 70fps with occasional drops into the 50s for it to be worth keeping the 60fps target. Right now, though, it is running between about 40fps and 50fps with drops into the 30s.

Hopefully they can make it happen, but they definitely have a ways to go.

Genuine-User1135d ago

I agree. Hopefully they can make it happen.

raztad1135d ago

So much stuff going on at the same time. DICE surely is looking for that sweet spot where the framerate is good enough without compromising too much in the visual department. Hope they find it. The lightning in this game is amazing.

the graphics looks great

I expect Similar performer to battlefield 4 on final version

Neixus1135d ago

Yup, RIP all those who said ''lol ps4 footage, more like $1000 PC''

Rimeskeem1136d ago

I wonder why the don't just lock it at around 45-50 FPS. Smooth frame rate like that is much better than fluncuating frame rate imo

BecauseImBatman1136d ago (Edited 1136d ago )

Because TV's have a refresh rate of 30 or 60 or 120 etc. It's easier to aim for one or the other, they have to be multiples or then they have to try make one and a half frames which is to complicated...

Rimeskeem1136d ago

ohhhhh, thank you

BecauseImBatman1135d ago

Your welcome. Nice addition by Nick too as to why...

Nick_The_Slick1135d ago (Edited 1135d ago )

To add to what Batman said, if the framerate is not 30 or 60, it doesn't divide evenly into the TV's refresh rate and introduces judder.

That's why typically a locked 30 is better than an unlocked 35-45.

HaydenJameSmith1135d ago (Edited 1135d ago )

Yeah as Batman said it's to complicated to aim for 45 fps...

deadfrag1136d ago (Edited 1136d ago )

I really hope that the framerate gets lock i dont want that kind of variable framerate and frame pacing.Controller input with that kind of variable framerate wil be awful.Lock to [email protected] like Destiny or make [email protected] if achieveble.

crazychris41241136d ago (Edited 1136d ago )

Gameplay looks good but I want to see their DLC plans before I consider buying the game. I got that feeling that some of the most requested features like space battles and maps like the Death Star will be DLC. Also will hold off buying cuz the last couple EA games Ive bought have been complete nightmares at launch (BF4,Simicity)

On a side note whats with the bubble system? Why was everyone given a huge boost in the bubbles they have?? Not complaining, I love it, just wanna know why.

ONESHOTV21135d ago

i guess it's when the site was having problems and they could not find a better way to apologize than giving free bubbles.
