5 video game trends to keep an eye on

Here are the biggest trends to watch for this year and the next: First off: HUD-less gaming: The life bar is a thing of the past. With the success of "Metal Gear Solid 4" and "Bioshock," developers want to give fans a more cinematic experience, and one of the best ways to accomplish this is by eliminating the overlays on the screen. What players end up with is a more immersive experience as developers create inventive ways of conveying information such as hit points and ammo count on the screen.

That may mean visual cues from the character, like a lifebar on the spine in the case of "Dead Space." The lack of a heads-up display also gives players more real estate to see and keeps the clutter away in the case of "Mirror's Edge."
