Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime has told Kotaku that Nintendo does not announce games that won't be released for another five or six years.
Hmmm <Looks at Zelda> Yeah ok then
Why would Nintendo announce games they dont have. They announced a zelda title years ago but its still not out for wii u.
I have no problem with a game being annouced 5 or 6 years as long as they keep showing previews letting us know it exists. I prefer waiting 5 years then have nothing until 6 months to release. Atleast for 5 years I get steady diet of previews and news. Let's say if all games weren't announced until 9 months prior to launch, then we would have so many slow days on N4G. There would be nothing to talk about here.
Also a steady diet of blowing dust off your wiiu....and like it was said above, Zelda was announced and shown in action before the wiiu was released...still no release date in sight...also it's not even the Zelda we were shown that is to be released...they showed us the infamous spider battle that to this day I want to play...and sadly we won't ever play it. So lose me with this speech about how you would wait for 5 years to play a game...no not to play but to hear about a game.....because my wiiu still hasn't heard about metroid and it's going on four years...now my wiiu sits here looking old..dusty and forgotten...if e3 was any indication that Nintendo themselves have forgotten about the red headed step child that is the wiiu....smh rant over....before I talk about how nx a next generation console was already talked about..while you were waiting for 5 years for a wiiu game like Zelda and metroid.
this guy is becoming terrible at PR. I wonder if he would have announced FF7 remake if it was planned on Wii U even knowing that it won't be out before some time. It's about exciting the players and building that confident fanbase. At least with other companies we are sure their consoles will still exist in the 3+ years. Wii U on the other hand does unfortunately not have this luxury.
Reggie: We Don't Announce new ips in 5 or 6 years
they first announced xenoblade years in advance knowing it would not come out that year. reggie is just a puppet for nintendo (literally).
(COUGH COUGH SONY COUGH)
I agree. Furthermore, look at several other Nintendo games as well and how long they took to finally release especially in the west. XCX and SMTxFE were announced in January, 2013 and people are still waiting for them to release. SMTxFE does not even have Japanese release date. Yet they have the nerves to accuse others of announcing projects to soon. Their poor attempts at damage control are leading to even more negative publicity for them.
They've been making their mouths go lately like something not right. Calling other companies and that. Here's an idea...why don't they shut their mouths and focus on what they are doing.
@hanohano New account created on June 17 that goes straight to trolling. There is no use trying to explain anything to you. I am not taking the bait troll.
That's a lie, no Zelda game has been announced 5 or 6 years out before it's release.
Umm, Zelda for WiiU was announced with the console debut.
@Dark Ocelot That wasn't an announcement that was a tech demo which Nintendo explicitly told gaming media. The Legend of Zelda Announced in development (No info) Zelda II: The Adventure of Link Announced in development (No info) The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - Announced in development (No info) The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Announced in development December 1995 - Released: November 21st, 1998 - 2 year and 11 month period The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask - Announced in development May 1999 - Released: April 27th, 2000 - 1 year period The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker - Announced in development August 23rd, 2001 - Released: December 13th, 2002 - 1 year and four month period The Legend of Zelda: Four Sword Adventures - Announced in development E3 2003 - Released: March 18th, 2004 - 1 year period The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - Announced in development July 31st, 2003 - Released: November 19th, 2006 - 3 years and four month period The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword - Announced in development July 14th, 2008 - Released: November 18th, 2011 - 3 years and four month period The Legend of Zelda [Wii U] - Announced in development on January 23, 2013 - Released: TBA - 2 years and five month period so far… Again Nintendo has never announced a Zelda game five or six years out before it's release.
So that's a good thing? It's the Internet era bro...I'd rather hear about a game being in development period..no matter how far out....is Nintendo knocking the last guardian? Because the ps4/Xbox has only been out for a year and a half and they announced games like halo, uncharted, gears, the order, bloodborne, tomb raider , sunset overdrive, killzone, knack, ryse, titan fall, infamous, killer instinct...I can go on....and they have either been released or about to be released within a year...so In only 2 years and a half and all games announced at the launch of Xbox/ps4 will be out...far before 5 or 6 years. And these are major games....crackdown was announced last e3 and I seriously doubt it will take four years to come out...a new God of war hasn't even been announced and I bet it will release within 4 years....so while you try to defend a company who has had a years head start and is not only losing in sales but in games released and has yet to launch major games like Zelda and metriod..I'll be playing all the games that have been announced less than two years ago....rant # 2 over.
@kingthrash Defending the company? So correcting people on misinformation is defending the company? Also I don't get why you're ranting at me LOL? Write a letter to Nintendo if your that upset about whatever it is exactly your upset about, because it really doesn't pertain to anything I said.
Well said, bubble for you. Ignore the disagrees, they're just haters who cannot stand being corrected.
So many people disagreeing with facts XD.
I'm going to risk taking a bullet here but Reggie can go get his dimply ass fired. Beginning to hate this guy with a burning passion.
He's becoming worse than Greenburg, and that's saying a lot.
yeah and we don't charge people to share video other like other companies....
That was a tech demo and they said that everyone wanted it to be a Zelda game. Zelda was announced last year so he's right.
Reggie is a clown.
I like Reggie. He's a true gamer. He obviously like's to get a little goofy! I also think he has a lot of heart and a true passion for this industry. Also his smile reaches his eyes to me that means truth teller.
@ AJBack: A true gamer never pushes out lame excuse like "I run a company 16 hours a day, and you play games 16 hours a day" when he/she loses a match.
Hey I DO run a company 16 hours a day. However I lose matches because I suck, my work hours have nothing to do with it. Stop picking on us 16 hour guys!
Well, more like 2-3 years. Still a long time, though.
when he says 5 or 6 years, he is obviously exaggerating, because 5 or 6 years is damn near a console generation. but yeh, nintendo do announce games years in advance, zelda being one of them. massive games with long development cycles like zelda, need to be announced in advance to assure the public they are coming. if nintendo practiced what they preach, we wouldnt even know zelda wiiu exists. we wouldnt have seen that demo years ago when they unveiled the wiiu either. i dont see how advance announcements are a negative... in fact i would say the fact nintendo can release a game so shortly after an announcement is part of its problem- it isnt working on anything ambitious. sure your games can be announced and released within a few months when all you are making is mini game collections and party games, usually cannibalised from old games in their library. you cant just magic into existance a massive game like gta v, uncharted, metal gear solid etc.. they take years and so people need to be assured something is on the way... mybe if nintendo had something that takes years to make, they wouldnt be suffering the catastrophic failure with the wiiu right now.
Or.. The Last guardian... Final Fantasy 15... Final fantasy 7..Shenmue 3. All these games have been announced 5 years before they released to benefit sales of the PS4.
zelda was a tech demo ? foxtrot
by the look of star fox zero.. id say it wud benefit by releasing a little later
Ah well Hello FFXV Hello Last guardian. Nice to see you again.
Erm... Zelda, Pikmin, Animal Crossing 3DS... the list goes on and on...
They don'T include those in that statement because they're a given. We know we'll get at least one new Zelda per console at this point, for instance. What he's talking about is specifics. They didn't reveal Zelda U until quite recently, and it still doesn't have its sub-title.
Who cares what Nintendo releases and when? they are completely irrelevant (which is why Reggie is mouthing off lately, the only way WiiU can get column inches).
um... Zelda was originally announced 2 years ago, trailer was 1 year ago. If Zelda is next holiday, that is 3 years after announcement.
@ Ptown Yeah. And 3 years is NOT 5 or 6 years. People are taking his quote out of context for the sake of bashing, as I've said already.
Ummm the Wii U Zelda game was announced at the end of 2012 that is not recent...Also so ummm what happens when they make the announcement about it being a launch title for the NX? It was pushed for a reason and only the brain dead or the Nintendo cult members still haven't seemed to notice their console is done....IF they're lucky it might get a port like how the gamecube got Twilight Princess port.... BTW its already been mentioned(By Nintendo) that its a console, just not what its stupid gimmick will be. I guess it all depends what trend Nintendo wants to ride this time hoping that Nana or the soccer moms comeback
Reggie's been taking desperate shots at Sony and MS lately. I never really see Nintendo representatives resort to that. Surprizes me
You know what they say, "If you can't join them, beat them"
They are desperate and it looks bad to trash talk the competition especially when your home console isn't selling so well. ;)
Nintendo is just salty!! they are finally realising that the whole games industry is laughing at them and rejecting them! The casual gamers have rejected them, the gaming press and media is rejecting them, youtubers (who are a big part of modern gaming) are rejecting them, kids are rejecting them over ipads and mobile phones and fans of 30 or so years like myself are fed up with the b.s and rejecting them, hell even the most die hard of fanboys are now sick off them. There are a lot of youtubers (fanboys) who would defend nintendo blindly but have now had enough! Iwata needs to be fired and reggie too, we need a younger more in touch western person to take care of nintendo in the west. Reggie is a p.r puppet and nothing more! we need a more younger japanese guy in touch with modern tech incharge in japan. Nintendo sound so salty lately, hell since sony entered gaming they have dominated! Its like nintendo gave up generations ago and its sad to see. Bailing on the wiiu so early has sealed the deal for me and my family/friends. Never again will we support a nintendo hardware, its the same with the 3ds, look how many times they revised it! And so fans who bought the previous version feel like ish. Instead of giving up on wiiu why dont they make it dirt cheap? Like £99.99? bundled with the pro controller and game pad removed? Hell try anything but give up! buying wiiu at launch the biggest waste of money ever, never again nintendo. They have never really supported wiiu, advertising was garbage, mixed messaging, over priced, lack of basic modern features etc. Its like at every turn the intentionally sabotaged the wiiu which actually is decent. :(
" Nintendo is just salty!! they are finally realising that the whole games industry is laughing at them and rejecting them!" They seem to hold onto stockholders fairly well.
Nintedo's PR lately is just utter pathetic really....
The Dark Link riding Epona statue that was in his office before seriously made me drool.
Reggie must have an endless supply of feet to stick in his yap.
Does Nintendo think people are just going to forget they short-changed the Wii U as soon as they announce their next console? Or forget that they made excuses for a year leading up to it? I wont believe NX is coming next winter until i see a release date, but everything points towards it.
What I want to know is, how the hell did we go from using the NX's announcement as proof that they're not dropping consoles for phones (which is what that announcement was for; not a damned thing else), to saying the early announcement was somehow a covert attempt to start killing off the Wii U early? Especially after >explicit< statements that the NX is not a replacement, and that they'll continue supporting the Wii U even after the NX releases, as well as including it in their new Club Nintendo successor program... A single bad E3 is not an intelligent reason for these shenanigans and doom&gloom hypotheses.XD Nintendo's done some stupid things lately, but pulling a Sega by cutting the Wii U's life short, is not one of them. I wish people would quit pulling words from between lines when legit company statements directly contradict all the early death statements.. It's starting to feel like, at this point, Nintendo would have to hire someone to do a whole new 10-second Direct consisting solely of the words "f%#$ the haters, Wii U's not discontinued, NX in late 2017, get N or get out." before people would actually take the rest of the official statements seriously.XD
There you go, finally someone with some serenity: instead of speculating on whatever your hate throws up to your mind, just pretty much quoting what the Nintendo representatives said themselves. Bubbles for you mate.
I'll believe whatever the evidence points towards. Before i said NX was improbable for a while because they didnt have enough studios free to make launch games. But now i see what the missing studios are making... mostly simple games that wouldnt take a couple years. It seems kind of fishy. We'll wait and see, but i am skeptical.
Umm @ wonderfulmonkeyman go look up the first intial reveal of the ds back in 2003-2004 one of the most VOCAL things Reggie Fils-Aime was going on about back then was how the ds was not and I repeat was not a replacement for the game boy... I remember multiple gaming sites and media asking him about both the gameboy and ds and his response would always be Nintendo can support them both, guess what happened? Guess what happen to the game boy?
I'm going to have to seriously disagree with you Monkeyman. "...to saying the early announcement was somehow a covert attempt to start killing off the Wii U early?" Not one company has ever announced a new console early in it's life cycle unless they were going to kill off the console currently on the market. We can look at history and it would tell us that this is a fact. Xbox 360 was announced. MS instantly dropped the original Xbox. When the Dreamcast was announced the Saturn was instantly dropped. The WiiU is not doing well in terms of console sales. Why would Nintendo continue to push and support a console that is doing horrible in sales world wide? Nintendo is going to cut their losses and go with a new console to spark interest again in not only customers but 3rd party devs who all but abandoned the system. "...that the NX is not a replacement, and that they'll continue supporting the Wii U even after the NX releases," That is pure PR through and through. Of course they would say that, what else can they say? "Nintendo's done some stupid things lately, but pulling a Sega by cutting the Wii U's life short, is not one of them." Why not, they have already done everything else. Gimped online, no voice chat, under powered system, no third party support, the list goes on. Nintendo always plays by their own rules, why would they stop now for a console not doing well which they have admitted. One look at their E3 should point to all the signs of the WiiU being dropped. Besides Starfox what was another huge title coming to the Wii U...that we already didn't know about? E3 is a showcase to let consumers and devs show off future software and products for consoles. Nintendo showed no surprises but a Tennis game for the WiiU!
The funny thing is if you start to think of Nintendo as a toy company their terrible decisions make more sense. Then again in all honesty Nintendo is pretty much the Sharper Image of games. That's not a compliment either.
The issues with their presentation were not in content, but rather the organization of said content. They should have held games like Metroid prime federation force for the treehouse and put games like fatal frame and devil's third in the presentation. If that presentation had been organized a little better, you wouldn't have seen the amount of backlash they are getting.
Reggie is in defense mode and it doesn't really do them any favors. A bad showing at E3 is a bad showing, and comments like this will only make it worse IMO. The Wiiu is a total flop from a market perspective and it's clear Nintendo must move on from the platform asap. But it raises serious concerns for existing Wiiu owners and also questions regarding the viability of a new Nintendo system. Looking at the current game market I'm not sure the appeal or marketability of dedicated Nintendo hardware anymore. As sad as it would be to see them leave the home console market, just based on principle, they don't have the third party support or first party resources to justify another home console at this point. I just don't see it. Then again, they could come out of nowhere and pull another Wii type phenomenon out of their ass. You never know. They have deep pockets and have demonstrated on more than one occasion the unique ability to make that thing we never new we wanted but have to have. Until then, if Reggie could keep the negative PR thing to himself they'd be better off.
OMG, NINTENDO ! WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING ?
lol thats pathetic by Nintendo, they want us to make us think like every company does that, look Sony brand new IPs in just a year Bloodborne, Infamous SS and lots of awesome indies, and free games. Nintendo is just looking for excuses in how to make look good their failed console. Also didn't their bite their tongue with that comment.
Infamous SS a new iP ? yeah right...
Ever hear of Splatoon or are you just choosing to ignore it? And since when was Infamous a new IP? lol
Ever heard of ColorWars? A game Splatoon took ideas from and passed it as their own. How original ;) https://www.youtube.com/wat...
You should have went with the order, infamous SS is the third installment.
No, they didn't. Zelda U, apparently the example everyone is leaping to, was announced in 2013. His statement SPECIFICALLY SAYS 5 OR 6 YEARS. Simple math tells you that 3 is not 5 or 6. Also, Wii U has also gotten some damned good exclusives from third parties, and there's quite a few good indies as well. All it's lacking, really, is ports of games like Arkham Knight, but let's face facts; you and the rest of the gaming population wouldn't support the Wii U even if it DID have all those AAA third party games. Because it's a Nintendo console, and the stigmas attached to a brand means more to you than anything.
Unfortunately Nintendo needs a lot more than just current third party ports. They have to restore faith on many fronts. They can't keep up development wise, their marketing efforts are a complete joke and they are beyond confused in regards to what fans want versus what they choose to give us. I'm hoping whatever NX ends up being addresses all these critical flaws and that Nintendo and its fans are in a better place sooner than later.
LOL, this is a cheap shot at Sony.
Just 3 or 4 years!
They only wait for the console to be 5 to 6 years old before releasing any games for it to begin with.
I feel kinda bad, I imagine there under a lot of pressure at Nintendo, if they don't have a huge hit with NX it could be really bad times for Nintendo.
No, the NX will be so cheap and underpowered they won't loose any money if it doesn't sell. That's Nintendo's modus operandi recently.
I mean, if thats your reply then all you came here to do is troll. Nintendo is part of gaming history, though I understand if your too young to understand why they're important.
