Square Enix Doing Very Well Since Yoichi Wada Stepped Down

In 2013, news reached our ears that Yoichi Wada had stepped down as CEO of Square Enix after a particularly bad report to investors. Many gamers actually felt this was good news for the company, which has been on a downward spiral for a few years now, although the Western studios (previously Eidos) had been doing well. Now, Yoichi Wada has left the company completely, and it seems that gamers’ opinions of his work were justified.

Because he wanted hto focus on mobile gaming like Konami is now doing. I am glad he is gone but he wasn't for gameers

They have already changed their philosophy. That's not a bad thing change is necessary to grow. Half their games are western focused, so they don't have all the eggs in one basket. Not letting the Western publishers own all the western focus market is a smart move for them . I applaud them for stepping out of the shell.

Well we are getting a FF7 remake. Everyone else before now has basically told the fans to go f'themselves.

Not really. Several years ago SE committed themselves to remaking ALL of the old Final Fantasies. But they abandoned the idea after four games.

And those remakes were actually pretty faithful to the source material.

I remember many sound bites from Square as to why they have not (and will not remake FF7) in the past. So much so that I was totally shocked and speechless when the announcement came.

I played all the games you're talking about. Let's hope they bring more to the table than that because while those were good, I wanted to see something more, something new added like online vs. battles, battle arena like in FF10, etc.

I'd also like to see a "directors cut" for the remake, including some of the things that were left unfinished due to timelines. Any hardcover FF7 player knows about the various loose ends.

Looks like they are more Western focused than ever before. They are broadening their fanbase. That's how you grow and become a leading publisher. They look to be the smartest Japanese company right now. Make great games and get on as many platforms as possible. Don't just focus on Japan, there is a big world out there. Proud of square and the new leadership.

iwata next indeed. First the MS shakeup had me a much happier gamer, and made the industry a much healthier place. Hopefully Nintendo can have a moment of clarity and fix the NX before it ends up releasing as an 8 bit console with a foot pedal and a geiger counter in place of a standard gamepad.

Him stepping down helped them a lot as it was clear his direction wasn't helping them as a whole. Many, many bad things happened to Square under him, not too sure how much was him directly, but clearly he knew and didn't fix em. Had no KH release on console despite its huge success the gen prior, FFXIII, FFXIV etc. They slowly are getting back into it, I'm happy to see them focusing more on Japanese titles and not being afraid to make them, support them etc.

I didn't like what they did with FFXIII and hope to god I never see that kind of junk development again! lol
