It is fantastic that Square Enix will alter one of the best games of all time.
Just don't touch the battle system..lord.
* You could change the battle system in the original though to make it not ATB and more standard Turn-based right ? Why not just give a few options
i really think it's a good thing too, especially with rumors of Genesis being part of the game. It might be a mix between FF7 and Crisis Core and maybe Dirge of Cerberus with the badass Vincent. I agree with the above, they just don't touch the battle system, and especially not the materias!!!!
I'd actually prefer a KH style of fighting. Provides a better sense of actually being in a fight, plus it'd be like watching the team go up against Bahamut in Advent Children.
That would cause a riot and petitions to remove Nomura from the FF VII remake.
i read somewhere that the dev said "Cloud and other characters are looking great on HD version and making Cloud and others just stand while the battle is going on would be an injustice"... so i think the it is going to be ARPG... much like KH or FFXV. the only FF i got into was Dirge of Cerberus because it was an ARGP. i was totally blown by graphics of other FF on PS2 (started late) but just couldn't get into the JRPG gameplay system. if FFVII comes out in ARPG style i would welcome it and love it. otherwise.. i'll just be happy for all those gamers.
@nix I can still play turn base RPGs, but it just isn't immersive as ARPGs.
imo prefer some change, I personally think won't be as fun if everything was exactly the same, i.e. like to see something that would wow or surprise me. Of course though as long as it does not deviate drastically from the original version, I am cool with it. and definitely will be some changes expected hence remake and not remaster
No, please. FFXIII and FFXV already take away a lot by only letting you control a single character in battle (and the game ending with the death of the leader), keep this crap away from FFVII.
Really? You want the same exact battle system? God, play the old FF7. He has already stated in an interview he refuses to have these beautiful remodels attack and jump back into place. They can keep the turn based style but do it in a way that doesn't make the game feel dated. Sorry, regardless if you agree with this or not it's already been confirmed to have been changed.
Changes can, should, and will be made. They just need to make sure they're changing it in the RIGHT WAYS. Changing it into an ARPG is the worst thing they could possibly do for the remake, the series, their company, and the entire AAA industry.
exactly, if i want to play an action Based RPG i'll just go to FF15 when it releases. otherwise when i play this remake i do not want to be reminded of FF15 figuratively speaking.
I'm wondering what the combat will be like, Nomura hasn't really utilized turn-based for a while. I heard there will be possible changes in the story. That's honestly a very interesting concept. A twist on a classic that everyone knows, and no one expects to change.
Last time I'll be posting this, just a final reminder, the game WONT be TURN BASED It's been confirmed. (If anyone is wondering , copy and paste this messsge) (WOOO time for some XV gameplay!) http://www.vg247.com/2015/0... -That said, it’s extremely unlikely the combat of the original will be retained. “We can’t have these upgraded, beautiful 3D models of Cloud and Barrett, still lining up in a row, jumping forward to attack an enemy, then jumping back to wait for their next turn,” Nomura said. “That would be bizarre. Of course there will likely be changes there.”
Has not been confirmed by anyone. You're talking about presentation, which has nothing to do with turn-based/action. Get over it.
Why are you so blindingly optimistic? You don't want this to happen THAT badly? Why? You are the first, of the hundreds I have seen, with this view. Even the writer of the article understands what he means. YOU also know exactly what he means man, stop acting like you don't. Turn based isn't going to be in the game, and that's not a bad thing It's time to move foward. It just doesn't fit the setting and characters of the game. At all. Nomura knows this, and you know this.
Knock it off. Everything you just said is pure BS, and you know it.
“We can’t have these upgraded, beautiful 3D models of Cloud and Barrett, still lining up in a row, jumping forward to attack an enemy, then jumping back to wait for their next turn.” ----------------------------- ------------------------ Then it could turn out to be like a cinematic battle, in which you would be choosing your actions WHILE the "action" is going... Still "atb" AND fits Nomura description. I would be so damn excited if it turns out to be like this...
@igorgum: Soooo basically FF13's battle system.
@deim0s No, literaly more like an animated turn-based cgi
Damn. I hope that we'll be able to control our party members at least. I'll wait and see how they implement it first.
And I'll say this again, this will likely play how Versus XIII looked.
Yeah that's what I think too. It probably uses the same engine as well.
@One_Eyed_Wizard: It has been confirmed to be using the Unreal 4 engine which i'm completely fine with. I'm sure it has something to do with the Luminous studio development team still finishing up the engine and working on Final Fantasy XV. Also the studio Cyberconnect2 is co developing the game with Square Enix. They are going for photo realistic graphics. This is very exciting. I can't wait to see our favorite characters and locations from the game in ultra high detailed graphics.
That, actually makes a lot of sense. Lol, I can't believe I forgot about that system. Wow. Powerful post.
@TheOneWhoIsTornApart Do you have any sources ? No one confirmed UE4 as far as i know , i don't see FF VII looking better than FF XV if they don't use an in-house engine where they can do everything they want .
@NoctisPendragon: I read it on Square Portal. I don't know why it wouldn't be true but if it ends up being I made a mistake then I will certainly own up to it. I am going to see if I can find any more info on that.
If you don't like turn-based combat then why do you even like the game? It's not a remake if they're just going to use the characters' design for a new game and loosely base it on FFVII.
Because the game isn't about the battle system, it's about the customization (materia), the characters, the world, the story, the lore and it's importance for the time when it came out. It's so much more than just the battle system. If you only like it because of the battle system, why are you so fond of it? There's hundreds of other games with turn based battle systems. P.S. They already clarified in a dozen interviews that with remake they don't literally mean remake, but more of a re-envision.
"If you don't like turn-based combat then why do you even like the game?" Is that a serious question? I think you and kalkano- and SlightlyRetarded- are the only ones who look at an otherwise promising rpg and go, "Wait, this isn't turn-based. PASS." I have NEVER chosen a JRPG because it was turn-based, or because it wasn't, for that matter. It won't have an impact one way or the other on me getting 7R, but I WILL be somewhat disappointed if it is.
I guess it wasn't clear for some reason but when I talk battle system, I mean everything related to it such as the materia system and the customization. When have I ever said I'd pass on a good RPG just because it wasn't turn-based xD I've played and loved JRPGs that aren't turn-based. The point is, when you remake a game you need to find a perfect balance between keeping it the same and changing it. And yes it was a serious question. If you guys like FFVII so much that you want a remake then why would you change one of the core mechanics that made it so good in the first place. I'm not saying it wouldn't be good if they changed it. Just that it won't be the same game.
If I wanted to play the same game, I'd just play VII. The point of a remake is to play an improved version of a familiar game. I don't think the game will fall apart if it's no longer turn-based, nor do I understand why you would think the desire to see something other than that would mean a change to the Materia system or anything else.
@Adrian: "Because the game isn't about the battle system" You lost me. Never once have I liked a game in which I did not like the gameplay.
@Spotie: Dude, comments of "they better keep it turn-based" are FLOODING THE INTERNET! "If I wanted to play the same game, I'd just play VII. The point of a remake is to play an improved version of a familiar game." This is true. And that's why we want it to stay turn-based.
It is open to interpretation.
So, I did some more digging and came across the full Q &A session: The trailer seemed pretty serious in tone. Will the occasional humor the original game carry through? TN: The comedy or the lighthearted parts -- I like those. I don't want to change it that much. But we can't have these upgraded, beautiful 3D models of Cloud and Barrett, still lining up in a row, jumping forward to attack an enemy, then jumping back to wait for their next turn. That would be bizarre. Of course there will likely be changes there. But if we took away parts like the lighter moments of the game, then it would no longer be FFVII." Nomura seems to have a handle on the story, but the combat is definitely removing the turned based system. Hmm. I guess I'm for it. I think it could probably pay off in the long run. Could be fun too. I'm just happy that we're getting the game at the end of the day. Here's the link if anyone's interested: http://www.engadget.com/201...
"but the combat is definitely removing the turned based system." He never said that. Once again, that's referring to the way it's presented. He MIGHT be changing genres, and he MIGHT not be. There's no way to know, at the moment.
My dream would be a combat system like Vagrant Story, but you could chain your characters attack. With the resultant physics changing the combat style. It would ultimately play out like the animations of Advent Children but more dynamic. You would have these organic combat bubbles defining range & damage intensity but resulting somersaults, flips, weapon accuracy / damage would be prone to change.
There will be changes, but it's in good hands the way it sounds . This is the one game they can't and don't want to mess up. And not to start a war, but why is Xbox One tagged in this submission? There's been absolutely no confirmation saying it's coming to X1, and no reason we should believe it is. PC yes, but Xbox no.
I haven't heard about it being confirmed for any platform but PS4 but they did say PS4 first. I see no reason why they shouldn't port it to X1 eventually.
Nothing is confirmed as of yet other than PS4 and likely followed by PC. And understand i'm in no way saying X1 will never see it. However, I've heard talk that Sony's financial support developing and marketing the original version in '97 is why it was never ported to the 360 back when PS3 got a port. This could change possibly if enough changes are made and it can be considered a new IP. Very up in the air and PS4 wont likely see this game before 2017 (20th anniversary of FFVIi). Therefore you won't likely know till then what platforms will receive it in 2018.
Can you not confirm that it's likely to come to PC as well then? Because they never said that either. We can all agree all that were said was "PS4 First".
No, but we know VII has come to PC before, on at least two occasions; meanwhile, it has come to Xbox ZERO times. Additionally, Sony has been pretty consistent with saying "console debut" when speaking of a game that will come to other consoles after a period of exclusivity, so it's reasonable to believe that PC will follow PS4, but not XB1.
No it's not.
If the gameplay is like XV then I'm definitely picking it up. Then I'll have two FF games to look forward to.
Hopefully the composer of the music soundtrack will be the same guy!!!
The only things they need to change are the graphics and the sound quality. For the love of god, don't mess with the story or the battle system. Expanding on it sure but I mean they shouldn't alter what's already established. If they change it too much it won't be the same game anymore.
no it's not
is it remaster or remake?so it will have next gen visuals or just hd?
a man thought they made this pretty clear since they put the word at the end of the trailer but REMAKE!
This is one of those games that will sell systems. Literally, there are people who will purchase a PS4 just to be in line on release day to play this.
If I didnt already have a ps4 for uncharted n so forth this would be it lol
This was one of the reasons why I was against a remake. Way too many people with different opinions. They'll never be able to satisfy everyone. Make it turn based and they'll have to rely on old fans buying the game and potentially turning a bunch of new players off from the old style. Make it something new and they'll risk old players screaming at them like children. The trailer has already hinted that things will change, people need to just accept that and just be grateful that they're even doing this in the first place.
I don't understand why people are rooting for removing turn based combat? I never finished FF7 on PS1 and when i tried to play it on PS3 the graphics were so horrible i could not finish it (PS1 era games age extremely poorly). And now i heard that this was coming and got really excited. I mean just keep the same gameplay wise and go crazy with graphics and other stuff. And what is the point of making FF7 if you are going to chance major parts of the game. That just come off as them trying to squeeze money by using the name of a beloved classic.
What's the point in making exactly the same game if you already have exactly the same game? With such realistic graphics turn-based doesn't hold up. Having menus in battle breaks the immersion. What's the point of having a menu if you can link commands directly to face buttons? Nomura already said a lot is going to change. He literally said that people who want the old game with it's mechanics should buy the PS4 port of FFVII, while this game will be something else.
"Nomura already said a lot is going to change. He literally said that people who want the old game with it's mechanics should buy the PS4 port of FFVII, while this game will be something else." Then why not calling it something else then? If it's not going to be the game it's named after why keep the name? "With such realistic graphics turn-based doesn't hold up. Having menus in battle breaks the immersion. What's the point of having a menu if you can link commands directly to face buttons?" What the hell? Breaks the immersion? It's a freaking turn based game, you must be a complete idiot if it being turn based breaks the immersion. It's a video game, you know. Menus break the immersion, but a HUD in every other game doesn't? And what i remember there was way more options in menus that there is face buttons. So people really want a dumped down 4 face button skill system with some automatic hold a button dodge system, them fine by me. I'm not going to buy it.
Well, it's not called the same you know. The original is called Final Fantasy VII, this game is called Final Fantasy VII Remake. The name is different. As I said above, the game isn't about the battle system, but about all the other aspects it is loved for. So it's still the same game, your sight is just too narrowed down to turn based system to see it. And yes, having to click through menus while the character stays still and without any attempt to defend himself takes hits from foes breaks the immersion. You have 4 face buttons, with L1 or R1 to switch to another face you could have 8. Even in turn based commands per character u usually use Attack, one or two spells u mostly use with that character, one or two skills u mostly use with that character, one or two items u use the most and defend if it exists as option. Those all fit on 8 face buttons, no menus needed. If you need some other item you can still open a quick menu to use it. Nothing is taken away, it's just more dynamic and less boring.
One could see turn based as more strategy based game, than real action. I quess i'm just pissed that i will never play FF7 as it was gameplay wise. Like i said i never finished the game on PS1 and when i bought it for PS3 the graphics were so bad that i could not finish it. Now this was my golden chance and it won't probably happen, so it's like a kick to the balls.
Whatever they are going to do, Story and Essence of what made it The Classic FFVII shouldn't be lost, or else it'll just be another remix, and not all remix are better than their Originals *FingersCrossed*
It's being done by Nomura, so expect it to run on FF15's engine, which is a GOOD thing! tweak it for Materia, limit breaks and so on and we'll have one awesome remake, even the turn based folk dig the new fighting system, it's a win/win situation. I mean c'mon, picture this with what I said above, in Midgar, all while being able to swap between characters: https://www.youtube.com/wat... It is going to be incredible.
It would be wise to develop the game with an already finished engine. Luminous is far from finished. By that estimate we won't be getting a game in 5-10 years time. They should better stick with Unreal 4 since it's already capable of showing off some great graphical presentation. Kingdom Hearts 3 already looks amazing. Not really sure about the battle system. FFXV still looks pretty clunky to play but it's still year early in development until the finished product arrives. I'd much rather want them to expand on the original battle system, add more depth to it, make it lot faster, make it similar to the first Parasite Eve or Vagrant Story and raise the difficulty curve a bit. It would also be great if they give us a lot deeper materia customization in weaponry and armor.
Although I opt for the Luminous engine for the remake, I wouldn't boycott the game for having the original system, but I would however be disapointed. Saying that, it seems the FF7 community is split in two and that's worrying, one half wants the original battle system, the other which I'm amongst want the FF15 system, it'll be interesting to see what they decide to do.
@Twiggy I have to agree Luminous is impressive and visually FFXV looks stunning but the engine is far from finished. Kingdom Hearts 3 originally was supposed to be developed with Luminous but without the engine supervisor who is deep into the development of FFXV they had a hard time making this game right so they switched over to Unreal 4 because it's lot easier and lot more developer friendly then Luminous is and it'll be lot more faster for them to finish it properly. I don't mind a graphical overhaul of FFVII and I can hope it'll be pretty to look at but the best option would be to finish it as quick as possible or we have to desperately wait for another 5 years until gamers will lose their interest. The big example is the development of FFXIII. They spent more time with the Crystal Tools engine than with the actual development of the game and at the end it turns out to be an underwhelming RPG. FF Versus XIII or FFXV is still in development even after 9 years of development hell because making an engine costs a lot of money and resources. If Square-Enix aims for a 2017 release it would be wise they start working with an already complete engine because that project already requires a lot of work, time and resources. The graphics doesn't need to be ultra realistic and ultra beautiful, just make it pretty enough to look at compared to the original. I'm on the middle when it comes to the battle system. I prefer the ATB system but also like playing action RPG's like Star Ocean, Tales of series and Kingdom Hearts, but just making it an action game would be way too easy and the battle system from the original I admit is quite dated but not because of the mechanics but because of how simplistic it is and it has a great potential to be lot better then it was originally. Hell if they make it similar to Grandia's or Vagrant Story's battle system I would be satisfied with that.
... And for only $100 extra dollars, you can have the "Aeris Don't Die" Edition.
Im shocked the people in this thread haven't asked for that travesty also. These supposed "fans" of FF7 really just want 15 remake before it even comes out. I've actually played and beaten FF7 numerous times, and I cannot possibly understand how this game could play like 15. these people are out of there minds. If they go action RPG route sooo much gameplay will simply have to be removed. I think people want another stupid movie instead of 7 remake.
Does anybody remember Dirge of Cerberus? It was a lame attempt to piggy back the FF7 story and throw it into a Third person shooter game. This is how I look at the people asking them to YET AGAIN, rape all that is holy and desecrate FF7 again to try to make it some failed action RPG experiment. I don't want dumbed down gameplay, and Action RPG has ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS dumbed down the gameplay. Look at Diablo 3 for a shining example.
Resident Evil had a "REMAKE" and it didn't change the controls or gameplay. It went on to become the greatest RE ever made. Food for thought for all the people throwing the word remake around and telling us to embrace change. There is plenty they can change and make modern without ditching the combat system completely, I'm positive it will have changes and be made more efficient but I highly doubt they will go Action RPG route. It just doesn't fit the game at all, and it makes 15 redundant. The combat will be similar to 13, where the characters are more lively, but this game wont play itself.
It's going to go the Final fantasy 15 route. It will, and it should. Im sorry to say it so bluntly but I honestly dont see how it can go anyother way. The dude thats directing it hasnt made any other game but action rpgs, the proofs right there.
