Shenmue's 3 budget is a mystery, Yu Suzuki isn't talking, and why that's a problem

Suzuki did say he hopes the budget will be similar to past Shenmue games. During a 2011 Game Developers Conference presentation, he said the original Shenmue cost $47 million to make. If the budgets are similar, and if the Kickstarter had "only" raised the $2 million asking price, that would leave $45 million unaccounted for.

The story is too old to be commented.

47 millions for first Shenmue on dreamcast? The budget was high for his era. I am wondering what he could do with kickstarter money which will be less for sure.

*facepalm* Yeah, because the Kickstarter is supposed to "kickstart" the project, not fund it outright. If you can't put the pieces together it should be pretty clear that Sony is one of the significant benefactors involved here.

Exactly...let's help these struggling "game journalists" out...

Now, the author of the article does note that Sony is contributing to the project....what more do you need to know? You want exact dollars? Do you get that for any game in development? Stop the nonsense.

Ah, so the negative Shenmue III articles started to seep out like puss from a septic wound!

Let's wait and see before we start complaining about the lack of transparency on the budget.

It's already been confirmed that there's some Sony backing behind this game, who knows what other investors are in place.

We should also remember that the original budget for Shenmue was high because there had never been a game like it. It was open world before the term open world really existed as a genre - and pretty much all the development tools had to be created from scratch. Now, with off the shelf engines - like Unreal - that's a huge time and cost saving.

Confidential additional sources have to do with just that and nothing else. It has NOTHING to do with the money you put up as a backer. We already know Sony's assisting, but so are Shibuya Production--with funding and PC version development--and most importantly, we know who ISN'T putting up funding for this...

IT WAS SEGA'S IDEA TO PUT OUT THE KICKSTARTER, AND ALL THEY'RE GOING TO DO NOW IS SIT BACK WAIT FOR ROYALTIES UPON LAUNCH!!!
