PS4/Xbox One nearly 5M units ahead of PS3/360 in US during same time frame

In terms of sales in the US, it looks like both the Xbox One and the PS4 are doing very well for themselves compared to the PS3 and Xbox 360, with the sales gap between the two generations being pretty big.

Great feat for both consoles, even with sony in the lead people sometimes forget both consoles have healthy sales and are both doing better than 360/ps3 at the same stage

ABizzel13239d ago

XBO is selling at a similar rate as the PS3 did, and if sales continue or pick up then obviously it's going to be a great seller as well. It's just that the PS4 is so far ahead it nullifies that success in the eyes of fanboys.

360 and PS3 went on to sell +80m consoles, that's not a failure by any means. The XBO is currently on track to match those sales (depends on 2015 / 2016 sales). Though we also must acknowledge that it came at a cost (Huge price drops early on, just like the PS3).

MS is in Sony's position last-gen where they had to take a loss early on, push hard on exclusive IP's due to inferior ports and bad publicity (though this was mainly MS fault, unlike Sony's last gen). However, like Sony it seems like they're bouncing back, but unlike last gen it's not likely they're going to pull a complete turn around and beat the PS4.

360 started with an 8m lead last gen thanks to its 1 year head start. PS4 and XBO launched in the same month and PS4 has pulled ahead by around 10m and the gap is still growing.

Regardless the XBO is still doing well, and on it's way to matching PS360 sales. It should be around 70m sold by 2020 and the launch of new consoles.

The PS4 is doing insane numbers for a core gaming console, and is a huge success. It should be around 90m (if not 100m) sold if not more by 2020 and the launch of new consoles.

Both huge success stories, one just doing better than the other.

Spotie3239d ago

The XB1 is actually selling slower. It only seems to be on pace because it hit 2 million in its first 18 days, as opposed to the PS3 taking a few months to do so.

ABizzel13239d ago

@Spotie

Nope. At first XBO was selling worse, but after the Kinect-less SKU, all the price drops and promotions, the XBO matched the PS3s first full year of sales.

That's why I said it took a lot for them to get there, because without those sales their year over year would have been worse than the 360s first year. Year over year tells the true success and failure story.

In total sales you're right the inflated launch pushed the XBO ahead of the last gen consoles. However year over year it's neck and neck with PS360.

YoY was the reason they had to drop all those prices, because selling less than your predecessor was the reason the XBO was being called a failure. MS turned that ship around at a cost, but congrats to them for getting it done.

magiciandude3239d ago (Edited 3239d ago )

@Hicken

Not true at all. The Xbox One is selling as much as the 360 and PS3 and like Abizzel said, it's likely to reach the 80 million mark by the time the next generation gets announced. This is considering what little amount of games worth buying for the Xbox One is currently available. When MS and third parties release more heavy hitters, sales are likely to get better, not worse.

wegetsignalx3238d ago

X1 will fail to keep pace with 360/PS3 time adjusted once they start selling 10+ mil a year.

But the Xbox division isn't making any profit... Xbox has been bleeding Microsoft's money for years already.

Sony bled with the PS3 but that stopped late into the PS3s life cycle.

This isn't true at all...please stop spreading this BS

Consoles are not going anywhere

Volkama3239d ago

But expensive/powerful consoles may never be seen again...

MasterCornholio3238d ago

Are you making a reference to the XB1?

Because while it was expensive at 499$ it isnt stronger than the PS4.

Power has nothing to do with it. Its mostly just price.

You honestly believe that people wouldnt buy a cheaper system thats more powerful over a weaker system thats more expensive?

P.S Im not making a reference to anything. Its only a general reference.

Volkama3238d ago

I'm talking about the ps4 and xbox one. The primary reason they are selling better than previous gen is that they're cheap. If MS and Sony had aimed for more power the consoles would be better (obviously), but the sales would be lower.

The success of this model pretty much locks us into this model going forward, for as long as we keep getting traditional consoles. They won't aim high as per the ps3 or original xbox.

MasterCornholio3238d ago

Well to be honest with you I believe that Microsoft could have made the XB1 more powerful than the PS4 especially since they were aiming for a higher price point. But instead they wanted to bundle the system with Kinect and the hardware suffered as a result of that.

xwilldemise3239d ago

I predict Xbox One will reach 70-80 Million sales by the end of is lifetime. PS4 will go over 100 Million I beleive but won't reach PS2 sales, prolly like 110-120 Million sales? Just my prediction.

Relientk773239d ago

PS4 will definitely go over 100 million sales easy

NatureOfLogic_3239d ago (Edited 3239d ago )

So you predict that Xbox One will have the same worldwide numbers as PS3? No, not even close. Xbox does not have the same worldwide appeal as the Playstation brand. With Sony taking more market share away from Xbox in the US, there's no chance in hell that Xbox One will sell as well as 360 did.

40-50 million at best for Xbox One lifetime.

ABizzel13239d ago

Yes XBO has the potential to 70m, and the PS3 sold well over 80m units.

There are over 60m XBL subscribers which shows the potential there.

XBO and PS4 have been neck and neck in sales as of late in NPD and there are easily 100m NA gamers with a potential split of 45m / 45m /10m for PS4 / XBO / Wii U.

EU is PlayStation land, but XBO still has UK pull and a niche appeal in the rest of EU. 40m / 20m / 10m spread for PS4 / XBO / Wii U.

JP is a lost cause.

RoW also has a small niche appeal for XBO easily 5m.

XBO 45m + 20m + 5m = 70m easy
PS4 45m + 40m + 15m + 8m = 108m easy
Wii 15m + 10m + 3m + 8m = 36m struggle

PhoenixUp3239d ago

@ AB

You think Wii U has a chance to struggle pass N64 and GCN lifetime sales? It'll be lucky to struggle to 18 million

NatureOfLogic_3239d ago (Edited 3239d ago )

@ABizzel1, I'm assuming you're using vgchartz to come up with your estimates. If we take a look at vgchartz global figures yearly, It shows that PS4 sells more than 2:1 yearly compared to X1. This year is no difference with the yearly gap currently at almost 3:1 and growing in favor of PS4(keep in mind this is still launch price PS4). Xbox needs another huge holiday with insane deals to bring the numbers back down to the usual 2:1 ratio.

Vgchartz also show that Xbox One yearly drop is greater than PS4's. So my question to you is, what do you expect to change throughout the generation for Xbox One to start gaining momentum while PS4 loses a great amount of momentum to make your numbers possible?

mcstorm3239d ago

@xwilldemise I think this years e3 will be the defining year for the Xbox one as this will be the 1st year where what Phil has wanted to do with the Xbox will stat to become reality and with Microsoft also launching windows 10 it could help the Xbox one even more in the long run. I don't think it will catch the ps4 in sales but it is still possible for Microsoft to sell more Xbox ones than the 360 which is by no means a flop. It will be interesting to see what happens with the PlayStation as Sony are kind of in a situation where it could go one way or the other for them depending on what they do over the next 12+ months as it looks like they could be trying to push VR and if they let this over take general gaming on the ps4 then it could hurt them. But then again it could also be a big hit and push it on even more.

I think its interesting times for Sony and Microsoft. Its also going to be interesting to see what Nintendo also do now as I looks like the wiiu is dead set for 3rd but can still make them money.

miyamoto3239d ago (Edited 3239d ago )

I don't think these kind of comparisons are proper because 360 and PS3 were launched at different times and conditions.

PS4 will surpass the PS2 The Great.
I have seen where these things are all going.

As for PS4 and Xbox One...
One shall stand and One shall fall.

rainslacker3238d ago

I think the comparison takes into account the actual time from release to the same time as present within the last gen. That's generally how time frame analysis works.

This is a good sign for the future of console gaming :)

FallenAngel19843239d ago

Xbox One is selling on par with PlayStation 3 now at this point in its life. With this in mind its easy to know how it'll sell for the rest of its lifespan.

NatureOfLogic_3239d ago

Xbox One is selling on par with PlayStation 3 in the US, minus the huge boost from ROW like PS3 received.

FallenAngel19843239d ago

No X1 is ahead of PS3 in the US at the same point in time, worldwide their sales are both evenly paced.

rainslacker3238d ago

Think it depends on how long the lifespan is. If it's a short generation, then sales could stop prematurely. Last gen did tend to drag on longer than normal to get to the numbers that it eventually got to.

FallenAngel19843238d ago

With the increasing game development costs, don't expect this generation to be a short one. Hardware distributors and publishers will ensure this gen lasts as long as its profitable.
