Epic Games' Ray Davis on the impact of DirectX 12 in games development.
VRFocus reports on a discussion of the toolset offered to developers beginning work in VR by Epic Games' Unreal Engine 4.
Looks like Epic has developed a good relationship with Sony. First there was the news about Paragon, and now their focus on VR in general. Its good to hear, they are a talented team.
GB:
Epic Games and Unity Technologies are in a battle for the hearts and minds of game developers. At a time when game budgets are soaring — even for mobile games — and , developers rely on the engine makers to reduce their production costs and make it easier to craft works of art that rival cinema. They’re racing to create better and better versions of game-making tools.
Steam is giving away their VR tools in SteamVR and is also helping developers along the way with their projects.
Im just amazed at the support Valve is giving to everyone. They are really pushing VR to be viable, and that makes me a lot more comfortable in saying that this Tech is here to stay.
There is a very solid reason, VR now is accessible to even using a smartphone as a core part of the component , but only requiring a housing that has some extra components to put your smartphone with both connected VR experienced today is quite better than it was in its really high cost and bulky electronics to now you can do so with low, to mid to high price points in VR and still even with entry level do d@rn good level of experience with the VR that is better than the top of the line VR that cost you quite a bit more durring the 80' s and now its Viable now.
Its more realistic to invest into it now because there is a low cost alternative to the high price point entry point, but even still the lower price point cab do very good VR. Already.

This is just one company, the key about why this will work, is unity, unreal already work with Android and iOS for VR!
That's one of the things is your Smartphone already has a robust enough GPU's already on the SOC than can run the engine not stripped down, but the full game engine!
The SOC's in mobile smartphones may not be as powerful as a living room console like the Xbox one or PS4 , but they do not have to be, and that is the main point they are still powerful enough to be even more robust than a ps3 xbox360 so that's why in the speed at which mobile chips are advancing they are more than adequate to do what is needed for VR at least at the entry level, which means many will be able to take advantage if VR for low entry cost and software can be sold for VR at a commodity level already!
That's the real key why VR is now viable low cost and the majority of the hardware needed is already in consumers hands , at least for Entry level VR that is..lol
Epic Games was in full force at this year's GDC. The company showcased the breathtaking A Boy And His Kite demo which was essentially our first look into how games may possibly look in the future.
Man does epic even make video games anymore?
I guess this the same road Konami is taken.
Can u imagine the bid war between MS and Sony for Metal Gear Solid.
A lot of power left PS4/XB1? Well duh. We haven't even hit that Year 2 yet.
Many games still have last-gem versions holding them back.
If anyone really thinks we've seen what PS4/XB1 are capable of yet, they are seriously delusional. This gen hasn't even gotten started yet.
I'm pretty sure a game like The Witcher 3 is not affected by the 7th gen.
These devs would have to explain in detail why there's many resources not
being utilized.I can't see these hidden resources.Like the PS4,you wanna tell
me they were held back with their exclusives so far?.
Good to hear from a noteworthy developer in the industry, excited for the future of XB1
"given that there are so many conflicting views regarding the impact of DirectX 12 on Xbox One"
There are a lot more views that DX12 will impact the Xbox One than anything else. It will be interesting to see what it can do for games made with it on the Xbox One.
Hopefully at E3 we finally get some solid info on DX 12 and X1. We all know its going to get a boost, how much of a boost is the billion dollar question.
Ok.
Let's just end this rhetoric and make good games devs. More pixels does not make a game automatically great, or even good. You have more power to work with, good, now just focus on the core experiences.
