Pitchford on Home: 'Shouldn't we have it already?'

Gearbox Software president Randy Pitchford has expressed concern over the PS3's Second Life style online world Home, fearing Sony is making it too complicated.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com at E3 last week, Pitchford, who is responsible for upcoming multiplatform first-person shooters Brothers in Arms Hell's Highway, Aliens: Colonial Marines and Borderlands, said that he doesn't understand why Home hasn't already been released and called on Sony to make it very simple and quick when it is eventually launched.

When asked what he thought about Home, Pitchford replied: "That's neat. I want to play with it. It's kind of weird. I don't understand why I don't have it yet. Shouldn't we have had it already? When did we first hear about it? A year and a half ago? What's the deal? I think they're trying to bite off a lot there and make it really really complicated and I agree with some of the intent behind it, but we need a very simple, quick way to do what they're offering."

I just don`t care anymore at this point. One day I`ll get an update and it will be there. And i`ll be checking it out.

TheDeadMetalhead3678d ago (Edited 3678d ago )

They all have online now, so who cares?

MAiKU3678d ago

not in a bad way, just in a way so that you can wait for it without getting angry about how long it's taking....

I did that with kingdom hearts 2, which was released about 3 to 4 years after it was announced.

tplarkin73678d ago

Sony just wants you to forget about their promises. Just be surprised when hell freezes over before you get one of Sony's promises.

Fishy Fingers3678d ago

While I tend to agree, it's an easy remark to make. Shouldn't we have Brothers in Arms yet? Borderlands yet? No, because Gearbox wont compromise on quality and nor should Sony.

yamamoto1143678d ago

No one should compromise on quality, but it's one thing to take a long time to create a great product and another thing to take a long time to under-deliver or include too many things that people don't want or care about. We know almost nothing about why they're holding off for release, and in the end it might mean nothing in the long run.

Keyword: "MIGHT". I am not condemning Home at all. While I have no doubt Home is going to be a wonderful experience, it just seems like we're waiting too long on what's supposed to be a virtual social interaction product.

What Sony should do is release it as is, then start taking suggestions as to how it should expand. Pitchford is right in saying they may be biting off more than they can chew.

kingme713678d ago

FF - That's a good point, but the key difference is a game is meant as a one time release. With Home, Sony can get something out there and build it with updates as time goes by. The updates will energize people's interest too. I don't mean if there are bugs or quality issues to release it anyway, that would have a negative impact. Get a solid starting point and let people in, then build it up and up.

Fishy Fingers3678d ago (Edited 3678d ago )

"a game is meant as a one time release" While that is true, in real life scenarios how many games are released without the need for patches or updates? And how much moaning do we have to go through while waiting on that.

I have played with Home myself, I know someone who was lucky enough to be a beta tester, and here is the thing, it's far from ready, releasing now would cause nothing bu more hate and moaning.

It's funny, the people who demand Home to soon are the ones who haven't had hands-on experience, yet the beta testers all but agree there's a ways to go before it's ready for the masses.

Do we really want another 2.40 again? I'll take it when it's ready, when it's functional.

I know the wait is a pain in the ass, but it will be worth it in the end.

Monchichi0253678d ago

Sony wouldn't have this problem if they hadn't jumped the gun and announced HOME till they actually had some of it under wraps already. Same as with KillZone and with countless other products.

There great products in all, but they shouldn't leave sooooo much time in between announcements and release dates. It's one thing to keep them waiting, but they take it to a point where it's ridiculous!!

Doppy3678d ago

@1

I completely agree with you. I've known about Brother's in Arms, and Boarderlands for almost 2 years now, and still nothing new. At least there have been plenty of trailer of home.

deeznuts3678d ago

Shouldn't we have it already - This type of thinking results in bad quality stuff. I won't even mention examples. We just know it does. Getting bad press for delays are 100x better than getting bad press for faulty product.

People want it now.. but if its not perfect then they complain.. Why release something that isnt done?? If you were to release it now when it isnt as close to perfect as possible, Everyone will claim epic fail blah blah.. Sony would never hear the end of it.. Yes its taking a while, but they dont want to release something that isnt done and doesnt have all the goodies..

While it shoulda came out by now, Im glad it didnt.. I can wait a lil longer for a perfect product

InMyOpinion3678d ago

Why announce things years before they are coming out?

LevDog3678d ago (Edited 3678d ago )

Are you serious? They announce games years before they come out.. Why should this be any different.. Its a marketing tool.. It gets you excited something to look forward too..

You cant be that retarded............ CAN YOU?

Pain3678d ago (Edited 3678d ago )

Its Free so boo~hoo

greatness take time like the PS3...you want it rushed u get a 360....rrod.....

go outside its warm get a tan, ride a Bike, smell some flowers..u want things rushed u will be 30 in no-time and like wtf happened?

Relax............

@Jenzo 2 words Alan Wake.

juuken3678d ago

...Jenzo, Sony has been known for thinking outside of the box. They always have a long term goal when it comes to their consoles. If Microsoft actually thought that way, they would be better off.

InMyOpinion3678d ago (Edited 3678d ago )

What I meant is that they say it's coming out but continually delay it time and time again.

@juuken - Thinking outside the box...If it weren't for the 360 the PS3 wouldn't even have had online compability. The whole 2.41 firmware update is filled with features the 360 has had for years, and you are telling MS to think outside the box lol!

juuken3678d ago

"Thinking outside the box...If it weren't for the 360 the PS3 wouldn't have had online compability."

...You keep thinking that way. Without the Playstation brand, the XBox wouldn't have existed.

See? Look what I did there.

kornbeaner3678d ago

Hey Jenzo, How about windows 7. This is set to release sometime in 2010 or 2011

InMyOpinion3678d ago (Edited 3678d ago )

@juuken - I see what you did. You made a fool out of yourself. Without Nintendo the Playstation brand wouldn't exist. Without Atari the Nintendo brand wouldn't be associated with console gaming. Without arcade games no Atari. I could go on and on. What are you trying to prove?

MS brought online gaming to consoles and the others followed. If you don't believe that you're an idiot.

@kornbeaner - I was talking continual delays and you are talking OS release dates? It's one thing to announce a date and actually deliver on that date. It's another to just deliver one empty promise after the other.

Why am I even trying to argue with you? Most of you have a mental block that hinders you from saying anything remotely negaive about Sony and the PS3 anyways. If Sony killed your parents you would find an excuse to blame it on MS lol!

juuken3678d ago

"I see what you did. You made a fool out of yourself. Without Nintendo the Playstation brand wouldn't exist. Without Atari the Nintendo brand wouldn't be associated with console gaming. Without arcade games no Atari. I could go on and on. What are you trying to prove?"

Doiiiiiiz, like I didn't know that. Why do you think I support Nintendo as well? Without Nintendo there wouldn't be Sony. What I'm trying to prove is that Microsoft wouldn't have entered the console race if Sony didn't exist. Since they want to destroy the PS brand in so many ways, they came up with the XBox 360.

"MS brought online gaming to consoles and the others followed. If you don't believe that you're an idiot."

Actually, online service was before Microsoft's time on consoles. You lose.

InMyOpinion3678d ago (Edited 3678d ago )

Sorry, juuken.

I'll have to clarify so that you understand.

The Sega Dreamcast was the first console with an online service. But while Sony didn't even try with the PS2, Microsoft took it one step further with the original XBOX and finally made it a must have feature with the 360.

Sega never got the money & respect they deserved considering how many things they have pioneered in console and arcade gaming. Online gaming, celshading, first 3D fighter etc. Titles like Shenmue revolutionized gaming and managed to do things both graphically and gameplaywise that shouldn't be possible at the time. Still play on my Dreamcast from time to time.

In the end I win, not because of what I say but because you are very fat. Fat people always lose.

LevDog3678d ago

Really jenzo.. Im pretty sure Ps2 had online..

TheDeadMetalhead3678d ago (Edited 3678d ago )

The first system to have online capabilities was the Famicom (a Japanese NES). And I have proof!

http://www.siliconera.com/2...

It couldn't do much, but it still was online and connected to some neat stuff! And considering this was a good 15 years before Xbox even existed, then you fail, sad sad Xbot!

And btw, PS2 did have online. Ever heard of Star Wars Battlefront? Dumbass...

juuken3678d ago

No Jenzo, you said Microsoft brought online gaming to consoles and others followed. You're implying that Microsoft was the first person to bring online gaming to the console, which isn't true at all. Your mouth is so far up Microsoft's c*ck that you're twisting facts to suit your needs.

Microsoft was not the first to introduce online gaming.

I win again.

InMyOpinion3678d ago (Edited 3678d ago )

@Levdog - In order to be able to play online with the PS2 you had to buy a separate hard drive. The only games that supported online multiplayer were a handful of games including MGS 3 and Socom. It didn't work as it should and was a major flop.

You guys obviously don't get the point, The Xbox and the Xbox 360 made online gaming on consoles popular. Firmware update 2.41 is proof that MS are still the leaders in usability and online gaming. Sony just can't get it right.

@juuken - Microsoft and Sony are not persons, as you refer to them. They are in fact corporations, believe it or not. For the last time...

Microsoft was the first company to succeed in making online gaming on consoles work and make it mainstream.

You don't have to write "I win" at the end of every comment, by now it's pretty obvious you are retarded. See what I did there? Probably not.

Please go on a diet, not just for me but for yourself and for the rest of the members here on N4G. Help me help you.

juuken3678d ago (Edited 3678d ago )

"Microsoft and Sony are not persons, as you refer to them. They are in fact corporations, believe it or not. For the last time..."

No sh*t they're corporations Sherlock. When did I personify them? :/

"Microsoft was the first company to succeed in making online gaming on consoles work and make it mainstream."

...So now they're the first company to be successful in making online gaming work on consoles? Booy, you sure love sucking that c*ck dontcha?

"You don't have to write "I win" at the end of every comment, by now it's pretty obvious you are retarded. See what I did there? Probably not."

...I WIN AGAIN! ^___^

"Please go on a diet, not just for me but for yourself and for the rest of the members here on N4G. Help me help you."

Please continue sucking the c*ck because clearly you love the flavor. You know nothing about me-how I look, or how I act. Please stop generalizing because you're only using recycled insults from the 360 fanatics.

I know...you guys love to hate me. I'm your worst nightmare when it comes to defending the PS3.
