I agree that there was more creativity in the 80s and 90s, and lots of promising genres have disappeared or gone niche.

I don't blame GPUs for that. I would blame AAA and the large amounts of money that go into them. It makes AAA developers risk averse.

The middle tier has almost disappeared. That's where these games would live. The rise of indies have helped, but they haven't filled all the gaps
