Wii U Basic Set soon to be discontinued in Japan

Nintendo will soon discontinue the Wii U Basic Set in Japan. The 25,000 yen set includes a white Wii U console with an eight gigabyte hard-drive.

From June, the company will begin selling a new Premium Set, which includes a white Wii U console with a 32 gigabyte hard-drive, for 30,000 yen.

The story is too old to be commented.

Maybe worldwide soon too?

Yeah, about 250.00 USD, is a great price for the system. World wide would be fantastic.

Yeah, that would be great.

Hard to believe that Nintendo released a console with so little storage in 2012 (8 or 32gb). They clearly weren't planning on selling games digitally, with so little space available on either system.

Even consoles from 7 years before the Wii U had more storage at launch (360 and PS3), what were they thinking?

I appreciated the choice for plug and play memory because ultimately expanding capacity gets cheaper VERY quickly.

This is what Ninty had in mind to keep costs down in 2012.

One could insist that the HD twins should have had a TERABYTE at launch to accommodate the massive games that were inevitable..

Good thing there are You Tube vids on taking the PS4 apart ;)

You don't need a video to change the PS4 hard drive. It's really easy. I wouldn't even call it taken apart, it's made to be easy to upgrade.

PS4 and XO need hard drives/storage because they need to install the game contents to play the game when comes to physical/retail version while Wii U was designed to play games like a good old game console straight from the disc.

But you forget about games purchased digitally. Does that mean that Nintendo didn't plan ahead for digital sales? It certainly does.

How about these digital Wii U games:

Lego City Undercover - 19gb
Batman Arkham City - 19gb
Donkey Kong TF - 19gb
Assassin's Creed 3 - 17gb
Bayonetta - 25gb

The other consoles require installation to give you the best performance, having games load from the HDD vs. loading from disc. Lego City Undercover actually has terrible load times for the disc version, too bad Nintendo didn't follow the same approach as the XB1 and PS4. They clearly didn't think things out with the design of the Wii U.

I have to admit, a lot of people dont take this into consideration when talking about the wii u's storage size. I've had my 32GB for around 20 months and i have:
3 retail games
15 VC games
4 eshop games
Various saves and updates for 16 games

And still have 10 GB's left. Overrall, considering it decreased the production cost and allowed for such a compact design, i think the flash memory wasn't such a bad choice for a console like the Wii U.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory937d ago

no. They wanted people to buy an external hardrive.

So... what's left? Wasn't the other (black) WiiU also discontinued a while back?
