The Names, Faces and Personalities That Sell Games

Thomcult: Videogames are one of the few industries where there is such thirst for knowledge among consumers. It is a rare opportunity afforded to product designers that their target markets take such an active interest and wilful involvement in their work. While the opinion of any one developer is a valuable jewel of insight that the gaming press and public would snap up with intrigue and delight there is an even stronger cult of personality running through industry. Notable designers and developers have become household names, with the likes of Hideo Kojima, Cliff Bleszinski, Will Wright, Tomonobu Itagaki. I honestly don't think any game designers are house hold names.

They'll be known amongst gamers, but I doubt people buy Metal Gear because it's "A HIDEO KOJIMA GAME" or Gears of War because of CliffyB.

The franchise is known, the developer's generally are not.

True but in a few occasions people will get hyped just cause a certain developer is behind it we saw it with Spore even before anyone knew anything about it people were saying “oh that’s Will Wright’s new game” and the same thing would happen if Kojima announced the name of his new IP with no additional information, people will go “I can’t wait for Kojima’s new game”, Just my 2 cents.

Actually, I started playing Snatcher only because I knew Kojima was behind it. On the other hand, I'm not interested at all in Wii Music, although Miyamoto made it. It depends on the game and the personal taste, I think.

It's true I'm one of those people that care an awful lot about who's behind the games. Like Bayonetta, I wouldn't even take a second look if I didn't know that it was Hideki Kamiya and ex-Clover employees that made the game. I wouldn't care about Starcraft 2 or Diablo 3 (as they both just looks like they had a visual upgrade and nothing more) if it wasn't Blizzard who was behind them.

I care less about the new Tomb Raider because it's not the original developer. Even when HAZE looked bad and all the previews said it was bad, I kept my hopes up because it was Free Radical (the only time I've been disappointed by going after the developer). Anyway I also agree that there aren't that many who cares about the developer, otherwise no one would've bought IP's now would they.

I hear it's amazing when the famous purple stuffed worm in flap-jaw space with the tuning fork- does a raw blink on Hara-kiri Rock. I need scissors! 61!

Lines that are embedded into my mind.
