April 2015 NPD: Wii U sold approximately 43,000 units

Nintendo did not distribute a response to the April 2015 NPD data yesterday, though the company did share a few figures with GamesBeat. The site was told that, though the first four months of the year, Wii U hardware sales are up 15 percent compared to the same period in 2014.

Unfortunately, that still doesn’t tell us much. But thanks to a chart shared by creamsugar – a person known for leaking NPD data – it’s looking like Wii U sold approximately 43,000 units in the U.S. last month.

Not huge numbers for WiiU but at least it's selling. Hopefully after E3 we will see more interest in the WiiU.

Good job MS.

Concertoine1306d ago (Edited 1306d ago )

At this point they should just focus on making fans happy. The Wii U is doomed to small numbers by the nature of its games and features. But it has its fans, and in the future i think people will respect its library more.

The Wii U is currently the most satisfying to me of the next gen consoles in terms of games, so i want to make it clear to some of the more diehard nintendo fans that im just facing reality.

They should plan their next console carefully, so it can hit the numbers they'd hoped the Wii U would hit.

gangsta_red1306d ago

I agree, at this point it should all be fan service from Nintendo.

It'll be interesting to see Nintendo's next console on par or above current consoles and having three options available (even PC) on the market for gamers.

iplay1up21306d ago (Edited 1306d ago )

I agree with you for the most part, but don't you like some of the features of Wii U, like being in the middle of a game, hit the home button ,mthen intenet boom here is your game googled for you. Hit home again, bam back to your game.

They should have had more channels too like Pandora, IHeart, etc. Flash should have also been added.

darthv721306d ago

Wii-u is the only 8th gen system i have and I am pretty satisfied with what it has to offer. I mean you cant really argue that its games arent fun. And that is why I got into gaming 35 years ago. To have fun playing games.

I see these numbers as 43k more people who will be enjoying the likes of MK8, Smash bros, Wonderful 101 (really underrated) etc. and soon to be Splatoon.

mikeslemonade1306d ago

Nintendo Wii U is not the best system of the 3 according you apologists. I clearly can point out that I probably spend only 3 weeks of the year on the WiiU to play the exclusives. On X1 and PS4 atleast there free games on gold and ps plus. Along with their exclusives.

I own all gaming platforms and WiiU and Vita are biggest dust collectors. No suprise WiiU and Vita are the worst selling systems of the generation.

Concertoine1306d ago

It was built around features that are love or hate. The addition of a social network built into the console might be cool to some and a waste of resources to others. Same thing with the gamepad.

I really like the features, i think they make it unique. Some of the all-night studying i do is accompanied by playing some DKC or Resident Evil or Fire Emblem on the gamepad during breaks.

That said... i miss party chat :l

The 10th Rider1306d ago

Concertoine is right.

As long as they can keep the userbase they have happy and turn a profit (which they are now doing) they can at least keep those fans' loyalty and get them to come back again next gen. That's better than loosing consumer's trust.

Also, what most people don't understand, the Wii U's small userbase means it still has a lot of people it can potentially sell to. As long as they can turn a profit their best bet is to ride that out as long as they can, rather than throwing the towel in early and starting over.

Old_Prodigy1306d ago (Edited 1306d ago )

"Next gen" haha, that was pretty funny, you got me. Good games, sure I'll give it that but it's hardly next gen or current gen should I say. No clue why people still call them that.

pcz1305d ago (Edited 1305d ago )

ive been saying this for well over a year now. nintendo can only hope to build a respectable legacy for the wiiu now.

nintendo did great for that last year with smash bros and mario kart, beyonetta and hyrule warriors. they have failed this year. xenoblade x is all they got. and yes, xeno is epic but there needs to be more games.

dont talk about splatoon, lets be honest, if it didnt come under a nintendo banner, nobody would care- if splatoon is as good as it gets right now, then the situation is even worse than i thought.

2016 looks set to be a repeat of this year, with only zelda wiiu (if they dont abandon the wiiu version in favour of a NX version, which would be smart since the wiiu user base is so small it would render the game redundant.)

dont get your hopes up for e3 either, i predict they will announce lots of games nobody asked for, like mario soccer wiiu, a new wario ware game, cooking with samus: the metroid recipes... etc small budget games for a console with a small number of users

Magicite1306d ago

It will take time for WiiU to reach half of GC LTD...

SaveFerris1306d ago

I'm sure those approx. 43,000 people will be very happy with their purchase.

AngelicIceDiamond1306d ago

Sales are down for all 3 it seems. The delay of Zelda I think are the result of low(er) sales. People were very disappointed.

I think Star Fox and new Metroid announcement should reunite interest and eventually sales.

BigDuo1306d ago (Edited 1306d ago )

I would think that most people that are interested in the likes of Star Fox and Metroid already own a Wii U. Sales would hardly see much improvement from a Metroid title, albeit a short-lived one (similarly to even the bigger IPs already released on Wii U like Smash Bros, Mario Kart and Super Mario 3D World). As for Star Fox, it would have next to no impact at all.

oh my god.... this may end up selling less than gamecube.

Metallox1306d ago

It is selling less than the GameCube right now.

LOL_WUT1306d ago

If I were to have made that comment I would've been bombarded with disagrees. I just hope Nintendo has learned from all their mistakes this gen. Not competing directly with Microsoft or Sony is not a good strategy move. I hope to see a more aggressive Nintendo moving forward ;)

@LOL_WUT Don't type ";)" after every comment if you don't want to be treated like a troll...

Transistor1306d ago (Edited 1306d ago )

It's selling way less than the GameCube.

It'll be lucky to hit 15M.

The GameCube was 23M or something like that.

jjonez181306d ago (Edited 1306d ago )

GameCube? Setting the bar too high.
It's duking it out with the Dreamcast.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory1306d ago

it will be past Dreamcast by the end of Summer.

iplay1up21306d ago

It may sell worse than Dreamcast, Dreamcast on the other hand was ahead of its time. I had a blast with Dreamcast!

I also think Wii U is a great system. I use it pretty much daily. I honesty think the system has not had proper advertising from the start.

I can't watch live TV and not see a game and or system AD in less than an hour for PS4/XB1, the Wii U I can go weeks and see nothing.

Metallox1306d ago

It should outsell it by September or October of this year. Last report proportionated by SEGA indicated that they sold 10.6 million units.

Khronikos1305d ago

Ahead of its time lol? No. It was an atrocious system not even close to on par with the Saturn. Dreamcast love always confounds me. It was a terrible system.

I don't know what else to say but 43k seems like the norm for the Wii U in the US. I remember the Wii on its first few years, you can't find one in store. I think Nintendo could be a real contender if they just make a proper game console as powerful as the PS4/XB1 with traditional controller scheme. That will guaranteed more third party support and with their unmatched first party offering, they can,be in a much better position even if the console is $350.

After checking last April's NPD, the Wii is pretty much flat within the 40-50k range while the XB1 made a significant jump and PS4 declined a bit. So it is pretty much expected of how the system is going to perform during non-Holiday months and months without a Mario Kart type if exclusive.

APRIL 2014 VS 2015:

PS4: 199k - 174k = 15k decrease
XBO: 115k + 187k =72k increase
3DS: 106k
360: 71k
Wii U: 48k - 43k =5k decrease
PS3 - 35k?
Wii: 18k?
PSV: ~3.3k

Transistor1306d ago (Edited 1306d ago )

Last year the Xbox One was $499, the PS4 and Wii U were the price they are at now.

Rookie_Monster1306d ago (Edited 1306d ago )

How did you manged to reply to my post so fast? Is there some kind of trigger that set off an alarm or something. LoL

The $499 console is bound to sell less than one that cost $100 less. Simple economics. BUT that doesn't explain how the cheapest Wii U sold like 1/5 of a console that cost $350. There is a threshold on pricing and 2 similar systems that plays similar games are really neck and neck as far as the $50 price difference go and I suspect the Halo MCC bundle with a $50 price advantage gave MS the upper hand in a month without any major AAA exclusives. The Wii can be $200 but the game selection is so inferior that it will most likely will never sell as much as the other 2 consoles regardless of price.

98xpresent1306d ago

I think the wiiU had a price drop late year

curtis921306d ago

It's true. if the power matched the ps4/xb1 then you could legitimately ONLY have a nintendo system, which fans would love in an ideal world. But as it is, the Wii U is complementary to the new gen experience.

Mega_Volnutt1306d ago (Edited 1306d ago )

Dude, whoever thinks that If Nintendo had a better hardware compared to the mainstream competition like Sony/MS and that is going to make Nintendo a 3rd party heaven, is completely delusional. Nintendo has a bad market reception for playing 3rd party games on a Nintendo console. Nintendo can even put an "Nvidia Titan" graphics card inside and still, people will still prefer to play 3rd party games on a Sony/Microsoft/PC platforms. Nintendo should just focus on their fans like me and the next time they launch another console like the "NX", just limit the manufacturing to 10 million, until they see a market reaction and when a high demand ocurrs towards the NX, that way they don't loose capital like they did with the Wii.U.

Muerte24941306d ago

and let's not forget the deals through Gamestop and Best Buy where you could get a xbox one is cheapest $230

The 10th Rider1306d ago

"I think Nintendo could be a real contender if they just make a proper game console as powerful as the PS4/XB1 with traditional controller scheme. That will guaranteed more third party support"

Unfortunately it's not quite that easy. Without abandoning everything that makes their console unique, the best they're likely to get in that scenario is half baked ports that no one is going to buy, which would just lead to less effort put into the ports. It's a viscous cycle. Their current strategy that they're just starting to implement, where they partner with third parties using their IP's for exclusives to fill in the gaps between first party titles, is probably their best bet to improve third party support.

eyeofcore1306d ago

NPD Jan to April 2014 to 2015 shows that Wii U is year over year by 14.5%...

emilijo7771305d ago

wow PS4 raped xbox one last april almost 2:1. no wonder they desperately ditched kinect and lowered the price
