It’s a given that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a fantastic title. But is any game capable of pulling down perfect scores without pre-launch hype?
If the games good the hype shouldn't affect it. Also since one of the staff of vgrhq basically admitted downgrading because of hype it puts into question any scores handed by this site
I've never seen a games review scores affected by hype. Watchdogs and Destiny are perfect examples
"I've never seen a games review scores affected by hype. Watchdogs and Destiny are perfect examples" Like I mentioned in my other post, I would say hype negatively impacted both. A lot of people were expecting much better games than we got, which in turn probably lead to a harsher review/score than another title that wasn't as hype would have got. Though mind you, this is all fairly theoretical. The point being, hype is neutral and CAN have a negative or positive affect on the score.
Very well said...
Ughh last time I checked Watchdogs was a generic Ubisoft downgraded game and it got 8.5's from a lot of "professional" review sites. Tons of hype fake bullshit scores for that unfinished rushed down graded game. Seriously, that game sets a record for the most downgraded and consumer manipulated game.
"Are The Witcher 3's Perfect Scores the Result of Hype?" Of course it is.
I was about to say the same thing, Watchdogs is the perfect example. I believe that hype hurts game reviews, getting excited about what's supposed to be an awesome game only to be let down in the end, which is definitely what Watchdogs was for me. I'm super hyped and excited for Witcher 3 and am quite glad the reviews are so high for it, makes me even more excited to play it.
Hype can only hurt - not help - reviews, by setting expectations too high.
Don't forget GTAIV, guys.
The Hype is Right
"If the games good the hype shouldn't affect it. " It doesn't work that way I'm afraid. Hype ultimately affects your expectations, which affects how good or bad a game is perceived. You can see a bit of this with Destiny and a lot of other games that had a lot of praise/hype, then were widely panned/disliked. "Also since one of the staff of vgrhq basically admitted downgrading because of hype it puts into question any scores handed by this site" Not that I want to get into it, but VGRHQ loves sensationalism. I remember a while back they had an article called something like "I hold Nintendo to a lower standard," which was an article basically explaining that they hold Nintendo to a different standard (you should never have 1 universal standard, so it was expected). Also, since VGRHQ doesn't specifically name anyone, there is no proof any of the things actually exist. Not like it takes much to go "When talking to a fellow journalist he admitted to scoring The Witcher 3 lower because it didn't have enough sex scenes" and then write an article around the supposed quote.
The game is already played by alot of PS4 gamers, they gave the game 10/10 saying its best RPG they ever played. and those are people that actually playing not reviewers.
Did they really imply that? I'm not going to give such an article a click, but if they really basically admitted to lowering their score to go against the hype then I will never visit this site or give them a single click. That is horribly irrational and unfair. The Witcher 3 has had a decent amount of hype, but definitely not outlandish hype. If anything, hype tends to cause unrealistic expectations and people being let down, thus resulting in lowered scores. Either way, hype should not affect your scores. If you aren't able to avoid letting hype affect you, either negatively or positively, you shouldn't be reviewing games, period.
probably. I get a sense that too many reviewers are afraid to go against the grain and give out scores based more on how they think other reviewers will score it rather than what the game deserves. I'm talking in general, not Witch specifically
I'm playing it right now. It's a 10/10 for me. Great strategic combat, better conversations and more consequence than mass effect and dragon age, beautifully crafted world, all characters have their own personality; even the minor peasants. It's just a very very good game.
If sites give low scores people claim they are going for hits, etc. If they give high scores they are due to some reason be it hype, exclusivity.. Im sure some don't want to go against the grain as well. Either way reviewers just need to review and not think of anyone else's opinion. They are screwed either way they score it.
The Witcher series has always had great lore and gameplay. Making it open world just makes it even better. I thought the older games were around 8/10 worth so this is bound to score higher.
Totally agree. I got to that idea long ago a lot of reviewers rate a game on what they think most people will rate it and actually making reviews somehow irrelevant to me. Except of course the few lower or higher rated than expected to get clicks. I'm sure this game deserves great reviews though.
10/10 is a lil too much , i don't see how the gameplay gets away with a 10/10 unless an other freature has somehting like 12/10 or whatever .
Ahh here we go with the nonsense articles. The Order had huge hype the reviews still didn't go well so your point is invalid.
Watch dog and Call of duty come to my mind with over hyped bull shit scores.
Agree. Are Bloodborne's scores due to hype? No, the game owns! Same thing here. GOTY showdown!
The WItcher didn't have masses of hype though. Good hype but not stratospheric like Titanfall and others. It depends on each person's experience.
No other games in 2014 reached the hype for Destiny and Titanfall by far. Those games got multiple hundred articles on all the big sites. They were overhyped.
I would throw in The Order also, there were a few points even on N4G where we were flooded by The Order articles.
i would throw in Watchdogs for sure.. what a let down... my only regret this gen so far
No, it is just a great game. If you been following a pattern, games that generally scores great like Witcher 3, shadow of Mordor, Bloodborne, and Forza Horizon 2 usually have their embargo broken a week before release while games that have embargo that is on the day of release like Destiny, Watch Dogs, Driveclub, The Orders all scored mediocre or not up to the level of their hype really does tell a story. If publishers have confident in their products, they don't have issue with early reviews because they know their game will be scores well and even generate more hype and increase a few more pre-sales for them. On the other habd, those games with mediocre scores, publishers probably know ahead of time their game Probably will not do well on scores and try to maximize sales on release and hold on to embargo as long as they can. Hype got nothing to do with it as seen from games like Watch Dog bombing with critics. It is always about the quality of the game.
No, it deserves the scores its getting
No game is perfect, so perfect scores mean nothing to me. Watching some streams I can see for myself that it isn't perfect, in fact I'm wary about buying it at full price now. I think I'm going to hold off.
A 10 does not, and never has, meant a "perfect game". If you are going to avoid a fantastic game simply because it's not perfect you're being a bit silly in my opinion.
I didn't say I was avoiding it because it wasn't perfect. As I said, no game is perfect. I'd never play any games at all if I was waiting on perfection. I'm going to hold off because the combat looks very weak imo. I'll probably play the game at some point but I don't feel the need to buy it right away at full price. You don't know if it's fantastic until you play it yourself. I bought Dragon Age Inquisition because it was supposed to be Game of the Year material according to the opinions of other people, and I find it incredibly boring, mainly because the combat is awful. What I've seen of this game reminds me of DA:I, and that's a big turn off for me.
No, the hype alone doesn't give you 10/10, remember Watchdogs? We have seen worse games with 10/10 scores in the past, I don't see why TW3 shouldn't have some of them.
"Are The Witcher 3's Perfect Scores the Result of Hype?" I'm not even going to dignify that with a response....but the answer is NO! ;P
Have other games got there scores adjusted for hype? The Order's reviews were spot on despite the hype. Destiny's reviews were spot on despite the massive hype. Watchdogs reviews were fair too. Plenty of hype games were disappointments last year and were reviewed and scored appropriately. So why is when a games like Bloodborne, MKX, and The Witcher score high were now questioning this? Everyone should just be happy we're finally getting great AAA games for the new consoles.
Dono, haven't played it yet?
i cannot see this game as a 10/10 no way at all, i see it as a 8.0 (maybe(, a 10/10 would be like skyrim,(yea skyrim has bugs, whoopdy doo) demons souls, bloodborne. shadow of the colossus, this does like nice exviornments and all and good gameplay but nothing that screams "this is a MUST HAVE " which is why i will buy it used next year in my backlog maybe for like 25 bucks or so. i also watched alot of gameplay on it, it really just looks pretty plain.
Skyrim with game-breaking bugs '10/10'.. Gimme a friggin' break
sorry man. you're just wrong on that one.
Sure, when the hype lives up. Destiny is still the most hyped game of the generation and look what kind of scores it got. When the hype train either: Reaches its Destination with a downgrade but its was a great ride when it hits its Destination and everyones happy. (TW3) The train derails losing everything right when its about to hit its Destination. In fact, it barely made it to its destination. (AC Unity) The hype train goes so fast its starts to lose quality (screws coming loose/smoking) and its destination was nothing like it was suppose to be (WD) The hype train goes strongly the strongest one yet, only to have bandits (Devs/pubs) Take out half of its luggage and downgrade the train and a disappointment at arrival (Destiny)
Good games get great reviews, regardless of hype. We have seen a few games get ravaged in review scores despite the great hype they received before hand. Witcher 3 you can just tell from the previous installments that these devs care about their game and would do their best to craft not only an excellent game but an excellent experience. Can't wait to get this game and dive in.
Are clickbait articles the result of hype?
Na the game is just good
If hype effected review scores then it would more likely lower the score. Destiny had massive hype and had average reviews so no this view is completely stupid. It's more of a case that The Witcher 3 has lived up to the hype rather than missing the mark completely like most other hyped games.
This article is ridiculous. If anything, hype leads to over-expectation, and disappointment (see Peter Molyneux and his Fable games), while a lack thereof leads to lower expectations and pleasant surprises. It's the other way around.
Isn't usually the other way around? Games like Destiny had massive hype and in he end it got a bunch of 7s. Either way I liked the witcher 2 so I'm getting this one, too.
AC Unity, Destiny, The Order 1886 were some of the most hyped games in the last year they averaged out to mediocre reviews. Witcher 3 didn't recieve nearly the same level as those titles, so that answers your question. Witcher 3 got good review scores because the majority of critics enjoyed it. This isn't a hard concept to figure out.
Ac Unity was hyped? don't think it was compared to Watch Dogs, Titanfall and Destiny.
Kind of. I mean, the formula to a perfect score nowadays seems to be two things. 1. Show off the game in every sense, promise hours of gameplay, and make it really pretty. 2. Don't say a single thing that would spark controversy. But there are exceptions like Ori and the Blind Forest, which didn't have a whole lot of PR behind it, but managed to pull out with a good handful of perfect scores, and for good reason. I think the real thing to remember is that there is no such thing as a perfect game, and it's hard to take any site seriously that throws out 10's to whatever's popular.
This game will not disappoint from playing the other two we are all in for a treat the hype is strong in this one.
If it is true for this game, it would be true for all games and evidence has shown it is not. Think Destiny.
No...their the results of the amazing work of a small independet studio, that still tries to do games for the love of gaming, and succeded...
If it wasn't a good game I would be mad. But since its an incredible game I dont mind the high scores.
A perfect score is a perfect score. It looks like it deserves it without having even played it I can see the quality. Hype only helps huge franchise like Halo, COD, and mostly FPS shooting games get overhyped scores. This isnt one of those megabucks franchises backed by big money and advertisements like those others. Its just a straight forward hardcore gamers game which delivered.
I think it's hype driven. The Witcher is a very solitary adventuring experience without any NPCs to recruit or base to consolidate your power. In that regards it lacks features of the greats like Skyrim. That should've been noted.
Those.. Aren't what it's about, and don't inherently make for a better game.
Is good thing bad? Click our article to find out.
I so hate the internet for stupid and senseless sh*t like this article!
Who cares? Check out the newest trailer!! https://www.youtube.com/wat...
Sounds like the result of a Good game.
