Opinion: Are Game Delays Always Good?

I’m writing this opinion piece with bitter in my mouth after the announcement of the Ratchet & Clank Reboot delay to Spring 2016. We always try to be positive when a game gets delayed because that means more time for the developer to polish the game, to fix eventual bugs and overall to make devs breath so to speak

Old but gold,

When the delays are so long all hype dies (like with watchdogs) by the time of launch it is bad. It is really bad when you have over a 1 year delay and still launch a broken game though. Seems some people aren't bothered.

For me, as long as the game released after a delay is polished and good, it is worth it.

I think of a delay as mandatory overtime. No one really wants to do it, but it must be done for the good of the company.

South Park: The Stick of Truth was delayed but the hype didn't die for that game.

The death of Watch Dogs hype had nothing to do with delays. It had to do with the trailers after the initial reveal showing large downgrades in graphics and onscreen action in general.

OT - It's a silly question. Of course they aren't always good.

But Wasn't that game passed down from one Developing company to another though? In which I can understand why that game could potentially get derailed in between lol

* Nothing is ever just one thing......

Some are good, some are pointless.

Sometimes a bad game is going to be a bad game.

Sometimes you just need to suck it up....release the turd...collect your losses and move on back to the drawing board for the next game.

* Way too much time adding content to games that are mediocre at best.

Delayed games are a bad thing for the short-term mentality.

That is pretty much it.

Nope...not all the time

Just look at WatchDogs

The more you delay the game, the higher peoples expectations become untill the game can't possibly meet them.

Hype also contributes to this as it grows larger since there's more time for developers to come out with PR big talk to get people even more excited.

It's why games like Shadow of Mordor and Alien Isolation did so well because they were not hyped up so much and announced too early.

The delay wasn't the thing that raised expectations for watch dogs , it was the "gameplay" video they showed that did that then it released and what not even close to being the same game they advertised.

....nope. Those games did well because they are great games. I'm sorry but if you raise your expectations to such a degree, that is your fault, not any publisher or developers fault.

It makes no sense. What raises those expectations is real features that may not appear once released, if the game is the same concept as what was shown, it should be no problem, to buy a game based on "excitement' vs what the actual damn game is makes no sense.

I'm sorry but not all gamers buy games because of um..."hype" and it shouldn't be factored into creating a quality game.

I got Isolation and Evil Within about a month ago....sure I got it based on "hype" despite me buying year months after release? I got them because they are quality games by great developers....

Watch_Dogs failed because it wasn't representative of what Ubisoft showed at the revealing of that game, the story sucked and the main character had the personality of a bag of rocks. Also SEGA actually considers Alien: Isolation a failure.
