Mike calmly discusses why he feels that DICE should change the name of their upcoming Star Wars Battlefront to something that fits its features better.
"to something that fits its features better" Judging from the small things we've seen and everything we've heard about the game Star Wars: Battlefield Edition /s
It doesn't even have ADS, that by default is quite a bit different from a combat perspective. Not sure Battlefield has Heroes either. But yea, it's a multiplayer game. If such small differences make you feel this way than Halo should not be called Halo, Tomb Raider should not be called Tomb Raider and Uncharted should not be Uncharted. All of those series have taken on huge gameplay changes recently.
Yea half the people are complaining that it's too much like battlefield, then other half are complaining that it doesn't have ADS. Without ADS it makes the game unique which I prefer.
I'll still play, I like BF4 and Star Wars, it's an easy choice. But it's not battlefront. I think you're mistaking controls for "gameplay." there's nothing new about halo, it's the same gameplay with new mechanic's, the same could be said for uncharted, but this new battlefront doesn't revisit any of the old mechanics or gameplay
"Yea half the people are complaining that it's too much like battlefield, then other half are complaining that it doesn't have ADS." How did these people get access to the game and played it already to be able to make these kinds of comments?
Perjoss - its more about the fact that all the announcements that EA and DICE have made about the game so far consist of "By the way, this thing you remember from the old game, we cut that out! Yep, cut that out too. And that. Yep, that as well. Whats left? Hmm....we aren't sure."
That's just silliness
It DOES have ADS, they literally tweeted it yesterday, but some people don't want to gather all the facts. * Some guns don't have a sight on them...as in certain guns within the star wars universe don't traditional have a sight on them. You can still AIM as if there was an iron sight. There just won't be one on the gun cosmetically, because it would go against canon within the Star Wars Universe and you guys would complain about. * Does nobody gather facts anymore ? Wow.
Except from what little we have *seen* it is nothing like Battlefield.
Yeah the more I see the less like Battlefield it seems, which is fine by me. I don't care about there being no space battles but a Galactic Conquest mode and offline play with bots would have been preferable. The more I think about there being no classes the more I like the idea.
Battlefield: 1942 Battlefield: Vietnam Battlefield: A Long Time Ago In A Galaxy Far Far Away
Yes it should.
Nah, it shouldn't
why not call it Battlefront 3 though.. why are we starting over again with the title?
Because it allows them to have an excuse to why they want to change it for the mainstream with gimmick like features found in every other online game rather then keep it like past titles So if anyone tries to criticise them the devs or even their loyal followers will say the same bullshit line "It's a reboot"
The people who are actually going to buy the game in abundance have no idea Battlefront 1 or 2 even exist. It's a smart idea to reboot it, instead of making a sequel to games that didn't put up big numbers and haven't been around for 10+ years. DICE being behind it is more relevant than the older games.
They have made it pretty clear this a reboot of Battlefront, not a sequel to a game that came out 10+ years ago. Which is smart decision, 90% of the people who buy it will have never played the previous installments.
fair enough. I guess whenever a title has too many sequels attached people get wary of the games. Better off to start fresh again.. :P
Transistor - Calling it a reboot is a lazy and irresponsible money grab, just like all of reboot culture we're living in now. They're not only assuming that the people buying this game know what SWBF is, they're COUNTING on that fact, because they know that nerds like us will buy it from its name alone, no matter what the content actually is. If they were so concerned with getting new fans and care so little about the legacy they're becoming a part of (which they obviously do) then they should just call it something else. The ONLY purpose of calling it Star Wars Battlefront is to cash in on nostalgia.
I agree, to a degree. But that is the 10%. Plus, I think you're forgetting Battlefront was inspired by Battlefield, even down to the name.
"They're not only assuming that the people buying this game know what SWBF is, they're COUNTING on that fact, because they know that nerds like us will buy it from its name alone" The fact that it's old school Star Wars will sell the game, not the "Battlefront" part of the title.
@Mystic - then if it's supposed to sell on the name Star Wars, why call it Battlefront if they aren't trying to cash in on those older players? Why not call it "Star Wars: The Large Scale Multiplayer Fight Fest" instead? ;)
Cant call it battlefront 3 if it doesnt have any features from battlefront 2 in it to build on!
It is Star Wars Battlefront, HerpaDerp?
I would be willing to bet those that are defending the changes are either fans of the way current gaming is, or not old enough to know any better. I mean no disrespect by this, just stating my opinion. I'm unsure as to how one could possibly defend the decision making here? Just simply do a side by side comparison of what gamers received 10 years ago and what we are receiving now. The proof is in the math. For years we gamers have received less and less and less.... and it will only continue until we stop purchasing it.
Look, this isn't Battlefront 3, it's a reboot. The game may suck, it may be great. I don't understand how people can judge the game already. It had one small trailer at Star Wars celebration. No gameplay. No press has played it yet to my knowledge. I haven't played it. A game is not good or bad based on the "math" you refer to... I really just want people to give it a fair chance. Once it's out, THEN make an assessment. People are so critical sometimes...
As graphics evolve games become less efficient.therefore takes up so much more memory something has to give.yes battlefront back in the day had alot to it but those grahics probably took a few weeks to build. Have u not appreciated how bloody awesome new battlefront looks? Its taken visuals to another level. And dice being behind the mp makes it a game well worth playin and itll probably be addictive as hell..
If you do the "math" you will see that you today "receive" a lot more! If you count number of graphical assets, count megabytes of models, gigabytes of textures, or gigabytes of sound clips. EA/DICE recommend a 3 GB GPU(!) for Battlefield 4, in addition Frostbite allows you to use a lot more per map - streaming in as you move around. Battlefront II released on 4 CDs or 1 DVDs that is less than 3 GB... [actually I think the Blu-ray space might be a reason for the 4 planet 12 maps! 12 maps * 3 GB = 36 GB (with static load of minimum probable game data. Blu-ray can store 50 GB of compressed data] BF2 required 0.1-0.3GB GPU, 2.3 GB free disk BF3 required 0.5-1GB GPU, 20 GB free disk DAI required 0.5-2GB GPU, 26 GB free disk BF4 required 0.5-3GB GPU, 30 GB free disk BFH requires 1.0-3GB GPU, 60 GB minimum free disk (9 MP maps) so my estimate for EA/DICE Battlefront? Battlefront guess 1.0-4GB GPU, there are 6 & 12GB GPUs out there 60 GB - 100 GB, will we see multiple Blu-rays? BTW I am old enough... and you know what. Battlefront I/II are still there for YOUR enjoyment I will play the new Battlefront!
Given I've not been keeping really up to date with all the workings on this new Star Wars Battlefront title, but... from the very little that I have heard, it's all been negative! Can someone tell me some positives? There's gotta be... something, right?
you can fly the Millennium Falcon.
Okay, that's pretty neat. But you can't do any intergalactic-10-parsecs-wide- space-dog-fight-battles, right?
lol, no. They are saving that for the GOTY edition they will release 3 months after launch. ;)
Here's a thought. How about we wait and see how the game is (PLAYABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)before passing all these judgments. I understand that it may be missing some features from older title but has anyone play the actual [email protected] game yet? Why is it today that games are judged before people even play it? I understand the ANGER (there are no space battles) but please just stop with this sh!t because it's getting old. Play the game first and then you can have all these judgments. This is getting ridiculous!!! I wouldn't even want to be a developer today if I went by what said on this site. Good thing its only a very small minority of people. The game is already a failure and we have seen zero gameplay. I thought that is the point about games that soooo many people on here claim. Oh well, maybe I should just join the hatewagon like everyone else. I'm, AT LEAST, willing to give the game a chance and see gameplay before passing all these judgments.....
Well, I don't know if it's just "today" or "now-a-days" that games are judge before they come out. I mean... isn't that why we're here on websites like this? There's so many games that come out on a monthly basis that time has become such a hot commodity. I guess it's just making sure that I spend that time on the "right" games?
The problem is that today, gaming websites are looking for hits. One of the best ways to do that is to find anything negative on an upcoming game, make controversial articles that get gamers riled up over nothing. My point is that today's games information regarding content, visual, etc. gets leaked before it launches. In the past, it was like a box of chocolates.
Every heard the sports phrase "You are only as good as your last game" Same is becoming true in the gaming industry, Many people still have a poor taste in their mouth over how DICE and EA handled Battlefield 4's launch and it will take a near flawless launch to gain back all the lost respect for the companies. You cannot blame people for being skeptical.
Do you actually mean "You are only as good as the launch of your last game"? Hasn't BF4 been working quite well for a long time now, and it still one of the games you use to judge new CPUs and GPUs by...
Really who cares. Call it Star Wars Battle Feces 15, if it’s a great game then I’ll play the crap out of it
Agreed, but In Star Wars terms it would be "Star Wars Battle Poodoo 15".
battlefront was a A BATTLEFIELD clone from the start. Same as lord of the rings conquest. It has always been and should be like Battlefield. Why are some people just noticing this?
True no argument there;however, the space battles, conquest mode, play as a Jedi, etc. made the game into its own franchise. This new star wars battlefront game is a direct clone of battlefield. Meaning is battlefield with Star Wars painted on it. I miss video stores for it allowed me to try the game first before I bought it
Star Wars Battleground
Its only a star wars game to cash in on the movies. Should be called: Battlefield: May the force give us your monies
Who cares if people bitch about it, they are going to buy it anyways. They may cry, whine, and complain that this new Star Wars game battlefront is inferior to its predecessors but in the end they will buy the game. Seen it all the time, I suggest to rent the game first before buying oh wait only if you have gamefly or red box nevermind we are screwed.
The author raises legitimate reasons as to why this cash grab should not denigrate the previous Star Wars Battlefront releases by calling itself "Star Wars Battlefront" and is right in suggesting that EA should not get any of his or our money. However, many will not heed this call and then wonder why companies like EA and Ubisoft continue to shaft gamers with release after release (in my opinion). There are so many game releases this holiday season that most gamers should not miss SW Battlefront and if they need a 'Star Wars' fix, they can get it in spades by watching the new movie coming out this December of just the original trilogy on blu-ray. This is a good opportunity for gamers to show the likes of EA and Ubisoft that we will not buy crappy reboots of beloved games unless they are as good as if not better in every aspect than the predecessors. A major failure will soon get that message across (again in my opinion).
The jury is still out on whether it ends up being a fun game, but from what we've heard you're right, it doesn't sound like a Battlefront game at all.
I just wanted Battlefront 3. This is just simply not what I was expecting.
EA have no way of winning have they? If they copied Battlefront 2 straight off using Battlefield 4 graphics, would you be happy then? RESKINNED!
