Witcher 3 on Xbox One uses dynamic scaling to boost resolution - Here's how it works

The people behind upcoming open-world role-playing game The Witcher 3 have a trick up their sleeve when it comes to the resolution of the Xbox One version.

Developer CD Projekt said it had added dynamic scaling to the Xbox One version, which boosts the resolution from 900p to 1080p depending on what's happening in-game.

Here's how it works, as explained by Digital Foundry's Richard Leadbetter:

"Done well, it's a good effect, but there are occasions when it fails to convince - for example, Rage on PS3 could strobe between very different resolutions - even when standing still - producing a distracting effect."

Let's hope it doesn't have any problems and runs well then. Fingers crossed. It would've just been nice to lock the resolution at 1080p. Oh well.

Yeah an inconsistent resolution may be annoying. If it isn't noticable, then it is fine. However if it is noticable then devs shouldn't use this method because it would reduce the overall quality of the game

We probably wont see a difference, 900p to 1080p.

I'm sure it will run well that's why the resolution is dynamic. If it was locked at 1080P then you might have some performance issues.

Well I'd hope it runs well with dynamic resolution but like DF stated it didn't work well at all with Rage on PS3.

Mehmeh947d ago

Didn't COD:AW use that also?
Seemed to run good enough there, so im hoping this will too!

A dynamic resolution sounds very annoying to me. Maybe it would be best if people avoid this version.

I think that the resolution of all games should match the native output of televisions.

I would rather have a dynamic resolution instead of a 'dynamic framerate'.

I cant wait the Digital Foundry Analysis for that game. Today we will have the first reviews too, in few hours I think end the embargo.

It looks amazing. I'm buying the ps4 version but I cant tell any difference between xbox and ps4 version.

I will be playing on PC but my alternative was PS4. Regardless of resolution differences I hope all players no matter the platform enjoy the game as much as I anticipate I will. Kudos to CDPR for attempting to bring the best gameplay experience to all platforms.

Man I can't wait for this game to launch! Already got the game and the expansion pass pre-ordered and pre-loaded on my Xbox One. Judging from what I've seen in videos, this game will amazing to me. I probably won't even play the Destiny DLC until I'm down with this.

Lucky for some! I gotta wait a few weeks till payday! Enjoy it though. This game is exactly what CDP said it would be. I cant wait to get stuck into it. Shame the dialogue choices thing doesnt carry over. I still have my x360 saves.

ThatOneRiggaNob947d ago

Damn that sucks man :(. I'll enjoy it for the both of us!

Moldiver947d ago (Edited 947d ago )

Please do! ;) . Im gonna guess you are one of the smart people who pre ordered this last payday. I could kick myself because I pre ordered PCars last month. I think witcher would have been the better choice and Pcars would have been better at the end of may. too late now though. plus the game is pretty good. But I havent even finished FM5 or FH2, so im wondering if another racing game is so soon was a good idea. but I thought it might get another few weeks delay. Glad it all worked out though!
