What Video Game Morality Says About You

Vice: My first time was towards the end of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. After deciding to become Space Hitler and usurp the Sith leader, some of my party were pissed off. Among the ranks were Mission Vao, a 14-year-old Twi'lek, and her Wookie best friend, Zaalbar. Mission threatened to leave, so I twisted Zaalbar's mind and forced him to kill her. Then he turned on me, so I Force-choked the furry bastard to death. Dark Side, indeed.

We've all done ugly things in video games. I mean, who hasn't immolated Sims in a doorless room? You probably named them after your friends, you sicko. (Pretty much.) Does virtual bad behaviour say anything about our real personalities or, like how science pokes at the universe, are we just testing boundaries? Chris Ferguson, a psychology professor who's written at length about video game violence, says it's a bit of both.

The story is too old to be commented.

I usually go the "good" route on my first run through. I make decisions based on what I would do in each situation and it ends up being "good".

I do have to admit to many Sim skeletons buried in my crawlspace though. I don't immolate them in a doorless room, but I do take away the door and let them starve to death in a pool of their own waste while other sims look at them through a window. No food or drink for days, no place to sleep, no place to drain their bladder. Ok… I do need help after all.

I always and automatically do the good thing in a game. Guess I'm a saint in real life. Sweeeet.

I never limit myself to doing all good or all bad in a playthrough, for example, in Fallout 3 I would never blow up Megaton because it's a waste of an entire city full or resources, however I would always let Megaton's sheriff get shot dead by the guy with the detonator so I can steal his hat, basically I do whatever benefits me as the player and not the NPCs.

Doesn't say anything about me, i'm a bit brutal when it comes to gaming

But just last week whilst walking to the school to collect my daughter I almost stepped on a snail, so I picked it up and moved it along in the direction he/she was going, to avoid a fatality

So I don't think i'm all that bad

"Let them see what kind of a person I am. I'm not even going to step to on that snail. I hope they are watching... they'll see. They'll see and they'll know, and they'll say, "Why, Hellsvacancy wouldn't even harm a snail..." :P
