DFC Intelligence Forecasts Global Video Game Software Industry to Reach $100B in 2019

GamesBeat:
Your love for games is going to push the industry to new highs over the next few years.

The market for games on consoles, PC, and mobile will reach $100 billion by 2019, according to research from DFC Intelligence. That number includes software across all of those platforms, but it does not factor in spending on hardware. But much of that revenue is expected to come from core gamers on consoles, as DFC predicts consumers will buy more than 200 million PlayStation 4s, Xbox Ones, and Wii U systems combined. PS4 will lead the competition while Wii U will obviously land in last place.

The story is too old to be commented.

Considering Wii, PS3 and 360 sales are almost at 300 Mil., the only noteworthy portion of the 8th gen statistic would be the shorter time period, perhaps?

Transistor1315d ago

The Wii was the reason for the last gen overall numbers explosion. All 3 did well. As this gen is showing, that's rare.

Rimeskeem1315d ago (Edited 1315d ago )

The only console this gen that isn't keeping or beating its track record from last gen is the Wii U.

Automatic791315d ago

@ transistor and Manic what makes you both feel that PS4 will sell 130 million to Xbox One selling 80 million. Please don't tell me based off assumption surely you have to have a better statistic or reference which you clearly don't.

Transistor1315d ago

The PS4 is selling faster than the PS2. The Xbox One had a great launch but since is selling less than the 360.

The Wii U is a none factor.

The more the PS4 increases it's lead the more perks it'll get which will accelerate the numbers.

The PS4 is definitely going over 100M. I'm skeptical about the Xbox One since it saw very limited increase overall since the price drop. 8% YOY.

That's not good.

Transistor1315d ago

This generation will probably end similar to the PS2 generation.

Add the DC numbers to the Xbox One and the numbers the GC has over the Wii U to the Xbox also.

Manic20141315d ago

lol, that seem's way off for the Xbox One. I expect 80m + for Xb1, 130m+ for PS4.

Transistor1315d ago (Edited 1315d ago )

There is nothing to suggest that. The Xbox One sales were extremely front loaded and has since sold worse than the 360, the Xbox One had a price drop and the 360 had production issues along the same timeline.

The price is almost half of when it launched and it saw an 8% increase YOY.

When the bundle launched it was $349, with AC Unity and AC Black Flag.

$349.99
-59.99
-29.99

Is $260, it launched at $499.

I think the Xbox One will be at around 50M.

The PS4 is rumored to be $299 by the end of the year, and that falls in line with the PS2 game plan.

PS4 is already outselling a half price Xbox One by 2:1, a $299 PS4 this Christmas and this is over, more than it already is.

With Morpheus launching and them not responding to the Xbox price cuts, $299 is a very real possibility. That's what they did with the PS2 and it worked beautifully.

Transistor1315d ago

Looking at your comment again, you pretty much expect the Xbox One to start outselling the PS4 worldwide.

80M Xbox One's currently would put the PS4 at 160M.

The Xbox One will never outsell the PS4.

@Transistor

"There is nothing to suggest that. The Xbox One sales were extremely front loaded and has since sold worse than the 360, the Xbox One had a price drop and the 360 had production issues along the same timeline"

Well at the pace it currently stands, it's ahead of the 360 and that to by a fair margin. I've seen the production constraint argument been used by many commentators here, but i remember reading a couple years back that initially the 360's shipments were kept at a minimum knowing the low sales of the first Xbox. Once they launched and had seen the reception they had, they ramped up production.

Then you also have to counter the fact the 360 launched with no competition and the Xb1 has to compete with the PS4 which is basically outselling in every country it's available in. So going at it's current pace, it's doing perfectly fine.

"Looking at your comment again, you pretty much expect the Xbox One to start outselling the PS4 worldwide"

No i don't expect it to outsell the PS4 but only gain more momentum. Right now, with PS4 outselling 2:1, i expect Xbox to sell much better in the future reaching 80m against PS4's 130m. and that's just a little more better than being outsold 2:1.

Transistor1315d ago

You're saying you think from here on out the Xbox One will sell more than the PS4. That's how you close a gap. 80M to 130M would be them closing the gap from 2:1.

Not going to happen. Nothing suggests that.

Manic20141315d ago (Edited 1315d ago )

@Transistor
Again not outsell. Sell better than they're doing right now. To put the ratio more on Xbox's side they don't need to outsell the PS4. The PS4 still will outsell them but they'd still be able to reach 80m compared to PS4's 130m.

Concertoine1315d ago (Edited 1315d ago )

LOL @Transistor

For the gap to close the Xbox One doesn't have to outsell the PS4. It just has to close the gap in WEEKLY SALES. Why is that so hard to understand? This is basic math.

"The Xbox One sales were extremely front loaded and has since sold worse than the 360, the Xbox One had a price drop and the 360 had production issues along the same timeline."

While the 360 didn't have a price cut, it did have a basic, stripped down model selling for 299 at LAUNCH. Why is it that the kinect getting dropped in exchange for a 100 dollar price cut is solely thought of as a price cut, but the Core 360 is totally not acknowledged at this point? Also, in the latest analysis of sales the Xbone still has a 1,100,000 lead over the 360. There were stock issues with the 360, true, but not 18 months into its lifespan. Anyone who wanted a 360 by mid 2007, could get one at that point.

Also, since when are we marking down price with bundles? That makes no sense to me. I can't buy a brand new Xbox One stand alone for 260 bucks, it's not selling for that. By this logic TLOU remastered bundle or Destiny bundle were selling at $359 and $349 respectively. In other words, not "ZOMG DOUBLE THE XBONE!!1!" as you claim.

The funny thing is, i still don't agree with Manic's predictions. I'm just content with thinking the PS4's more likely to more or less maintain its position and don't need to result to cherry picking and exaggerating the Xbone's situation.

As for my predictions, i say:
100 million PS4's
55 million Xbox One's
20 million Wii U's

I think the Wii U is what will prevent these consoles from hitting 200 million by 2019. I don't even think it'll be around by then.

200M for those 3 consoles by 2019? This would be a miracle...

The DFC intelligence is the real thing when it comes to forecasting sales, but it's also true that they miss some predictions.
