This week The Entertainment Software Association released its collection of Essential Facts About the Computer and Video Game Industry for 2008. The document (the full PDF of which is available here) contains, as its names implies, the big statistics and trends that have been driving the consumer games market over the last year.
The main facts to come out of this report regard the age and genders of those playing and purchasing games. Taking centre stage is the fact that the age of the average gamer is on the rise and how now reached 35 years old. Along with this is the news that the gender balance of gaming audiences is now at 60% men to 40% women, with the women representing a greater and more significant part of the market. Quite interestingly, women over 18 now represent a greater proportion of gamers than boys under 17.
