Newzoo has updated its chart of the world's biggest games companies by revenue, painting a picture of a year of almost universal growth across the industry's top 25 companies. Between them, those 25 firms accounted for 65 per cent of the global industry's revenues, a total of $54.1 billion. The figures come from the research firm's 2014 Global Games Market Report.

Thats not bad at all. Even though 2014 wasnt exactly a good year for games.

I think revenue this year will skyrocket which will be great.

Benjammin25969d ago

But I thought Sony were bankrupt and were closing down? /s

Congrats to Sony on the PS4's worldwide success. Its great to see Sonys gaming division doing so well. Its definitely well deserved.

freshslicepizza969d ago

this is about the gaming sector where sony is actually doing quite well. i'm actually surpised how well microsoft has done and how far back nintendo is.

Magicite969d ago

They stocks are at highest in 4 years.

Svinya969d ago

That's game revenue, not the rest of the company. AND revenue doesn't equal profit... So you fail in your sarcasm.

Svinya969d ago

I sure hope that Sony's game-based revenue is bigger, seeing as how they sold twice as many PS4's...

CryLessGameMore969d ago

Dose anyone even know what Tencent is and what games and game developers they own?

yellowgerbil969d ago

I remember reading tencent is a chinese gaming company that had bought a big stake in epic games last year. In China they are supposed to be a huge company but don't think any thing they've made has released here in the US.

N4g_null968d ago

I don't know what a sony is but I can't wait for the next tencent console the $.50 one neo burst station. It looks like the best game out is a chat and social game called messenger wtf! Ten cent is going to crush all!

The same could be said of Microsoft and Apple. No one is implying that Game Revenue represents the total Revenue of these companies. Ergo, the title of the chart...

Dlacy13g969d ago

I think you could make the argument that the title of this article is a bit misleading. The article itself is clear but that title would have you believing it was overall company revenue.

Mega24969d ago

Game revenue, not revenue in general. Very misleading, Microsoft is a powerhouse when it come to general revenue.

Subaruwrx969d ago

The headline is only misleading if you don't bother to read the first sentence of the article.

Pogmathoin969d ago

Games only guys, games only, so the news should be of no surprise really.....

Bathyj969d ago

I dont read. I only judge books by their covers.

50 Shades of Grey is a book about ties and mens fashion right?

Mega24969d ago

I went in thinking of total revenue, because the title was misleading. It's misleading if its misleading, where do you think I got the part of "game revenue"? from reading it...

Zeref969d ago

Its the title that's supposed to grab my attention. If it I read the title and think of something else than what is actually in the article it is misleading.

Pogmathoin969d ago

I feel mislead now, what were we talking about?

Brotard969d ago

Yeah an apples revenue is over double microsofts, but yeah this title is a little misleading

Spotie969d ago

Considering this is a GAMING site, wouldn't your first inclination to be that the article referred to GAMING revenue?

Mega24969d ago (Edited 969d ago )

You know, the fanboys talk about the companies revenues like they are accountants all the time, so it would surprise me if it was indeed that type of article. We've seen many of those come through here, they get approved because said company is involved with gaming, yet the article talks about its money only.

Pro Sony site, hence the disagrees. Not surprised, fanboys are the worst. If it was microsoft leading that chart, everyone would be singing a different tune.

RiPPn969d ago (Edited 969d ago )

Notice the chart is fiscal year 2013 and 2014 and is only factoring game revenue. Microsoft fiscal year is July 1st - June 30th where Sony does theirs April 1st - March 31st. That means these numbers for Microsoft ended last June and don't even take into account the price drop or fire sales from the last holiday so their revenue could be far worse than this graph implies. It also means Sonys numbers are counting all the way up until 3 weeks ago so their numbers could be skewed in their favor. Basically we aren't comparing apples to apples here and this is a non story.

rainslacker968d ago

Possibly, but the price cut did drive more sales, so it's possible it all evened out.

Otherwise, they both accounted for the holiday season, but Sony's numbers also accounted for a strong first quarter.

Tapani969d ago (Edited 969d ago )

Windows 10 is to hit us in July, so nope, I don't think there is anything Sony has got on the world's most used PC's operating system's newest, and highly regarded, version.

I mean, there are over 20 million PS4s and 90 million PS3s out there with some PSP and Vita units, but there are 1.5 _billion_ PCs out there ready for that OS. Plus, because it's free, it will be filled with subscription based models, which according to various data, has an overall better ROI (return on investment) than the traditional one-purchase-once model.

So yeah, while I love Sony and purchase their various products, I like to keep my scythe... truth next to where my heart used to be.

I'm a proponent of Gamesindustry.biz as well, so I want to point out that there is no problem with their data, as they present it "Top 10 public companies by _game revenues_". Edit: The data concentrates only on the US markets, so there's always that.

My guess is that someone is leeching off of that site's news for clicks. I hope that is corrected and true journalism shall take this malpractice's place!

uptownsoul969d ago (Edited 969d ago )

The Sony GAMING Division is doing better than the Microsoft GAMING Division, period…That's not the whole corporation, but GAMING Division v GAMING Division, Sony wins easily

MasterCornholio969d ago

Yep that's exactly the point of the article. There are other articles that focus on overall revenues. People commenting on that topic should comment in those articles.

Gohadouken969d ago (Edited 969d ago )

It would work , if Windows 10 was a game , and not likely to be free to a sizeable portion of users for the rest of the fiscal year ....

FYI the DirectX SDK does not require a license ... so it wouldnt even work that way either . Your game is royalty free as long as you dont want to run it on an xbox . At least thus far

Tapani969d ago

Guys, my point was to show how strangely this article has been represented when it comes to the headline and the comments section, instead of the actual data.

I was NOT in the business of comparing M$ directly to Sony's gaming division. Just saying the actual article is much better and less misleading than the clickbait headline.
