2015 and 2016: The Year of the JRPG

MWN: One of my biggest fears coming into this new era of JRPGs adopting WRPG aspects is that the JRPGs would lose their own identities, but I was wrong. I don’t wanna start a war between the weeaboo community and the live role players of the world, but the JRPG lineup is looking solid for this year and the next.

I see 99% action-RPGs. Wake me up when we get respectable, console, turn-based RPGs back.

KryptoniteTail1159d ago

True but that is one in a dozen, and most of those which ARE TB are crappy dungeon crawlers, not epic Final Fantasy type. Persona is the only DC I like.

I swear, action RPG fans are why Parasite Eve became a shooter, FFXV became an action game with tacked onRPG elements to pacify old school fans, and why we will never get another Chrono; it just isn't appealing enough to fools.

AudioEppa1159d ago

TB rpgs just kill all vibes from wanting to play them.

Let me be free and Japanese games become more appealing, like ffxv.

kingdomtriggers1159d ago

I pity you guys who like only turn based or only action rpgs. I love em all and frankly there are so little AAA jrpgs that every last one should be treasured.

gamejediben1159d ago

No worries, dude. Plenty of turn based goodness on the way:

Bravely Second
Unsung Story: Tale of the Guardians
Fire Emblem If
SMT X Fire Emblem
Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker
Etrian Mystery Dungeon
Etrian Odyssey Untold 2: The Fafnir Knight
Etrian Odyssey V
Persona 5
Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance

We're even getting some Western developed turn-based RPGs like:

Invisible, Inc.
Massive Chalice
The Banner Saga 2
and maybe even a new XCOM.

Relax, turn based RPGs aren't going anywhere. I'm going through my back catalog and I'm currently playing through Jeanne d'Arc on PSP at the moment and it's amazing! There's just so many good ones that I missed so I've got plenty to keep me busy while I wait.

KryptoniteTail1159d ago

True but it's not nearly enough. It used to be that ARPGs were the minority. Oh how times change...

gamejediben1159d ago

@ Kryptonite Tail

It only changed because ARPGs started selling more. If we want more turn based RPGs we gotta buy 'em and recommend 'em to our friends. That's how this works.

I just got a whole slew of my buddies addicted to Fire Emblem Awakening, Bravely Default and XCOM. Guess what? 2 of those have sequels announced. Only a matter of time before XCOM announces a follow up.

kalkano1158d ago

How many of those are tiny little handheld games? Disgaea 5 may as well be on handheld, with how PS1-ish it looks. Persona 5 and SMT X Fire Emblem are the only ones with any form of effort put into them, and I've never been a fan of Persona (though I may give 5 a chance), and though I like Fire Emblem, I see little of it in SMT X Fire Emblem.

kalkano1158d ago

They don't sell well because they're tiny little handheld/phone games. If action-RPGs were only tiny little handheld/phone games, they wouldn't sell either.

gamejediben1158d ago

Why are you attacking handheld games? Most of the best turn based RPGs of the last decade were on handhelds. Not sure why, but I go where the games go. If they go to handhelds, I buy handhelds. Getting indignant because the games didn't come to the platform you wanted is NOT how this works.

But there have been several PC and home console turn based RPGs released lately:

The Banner Saga
Valkyria Chronicles
The Disgaea games
Tears to Tiara II
Ni No Kuni
Lost Odyssey
Blue Dragon
Resonance of Fate
Eternal Sonata
Shadowrun Returns
Wasteland 2
Blackguards 1 & 2

So you see, there's still lots of these games that weren't on handhelds. And I hope you bought them and recommended them to your friends. Otherwise you probably wont be getting many more this gen.

Stay sleep. I grew up on turn-based RPGs but unless you can figure out a way to have seamless transitions into and out of battle, I'm done with them. It's simply too big a drain on my time.

Exceptions can be made for tactical RPGs like the Fire Emblem series.

q8kik1158d ago

Because the "A wild pokemon has appeared" text is too time consuming ?

kalkano1158d ago

"I grew up on turn-based RPGs but unless you can figure out a way to have seamless transitions into and out of battle, I'm done with them."

Is that supposed to be hard? No one has to "figure out a way". It's not some puzzle that needs to be solved. It's been doable for a very long time.

SageShinigami1158d ago

It might be doable, but I haven't seen too many people try to do it. Transitions take so long.

I don't mind J-RPGs keeping their visual identities, but it's not a bad thing if they steal a few things from W-RPGs like action battle systems.

styferion1158d ago

meh, a great jrpg is a great jrpg, even if it's not turn-based. Tales of series and Star Ocean series never have any turn-based battles and those're solid jprg entries. Turning away from great jrpgs because it's not turn-based is ridiculous.

kalkano1158d ago

Yeah, how dare people like different things.

jambola1158d ago

He didn't say anything about you liking different things,
But yeah i agree with the rest, stay asleep and keep your constant negativity with you

Magicite1158d ago (Edited 1158d ago )

Keep sleeping, meanwhile we will enjoy all the fun.
If You are not hyped for XCX, FF15, KH3 and Star Ocean 5, then get outta here!

I have played my share of JRPGS with transotions and random encounters on PS1/PS2/PS3. Its time to move on.

Big_Game_Hunters1158d ago (Edited 1158d ago )

Lol, plenty of turn based pixel art indie JRPGs on steam for people like you.
The only flaw with current JRPGs isn't eveen that they don't make enough of them, but that like most anime its mostly weeb sh*t.

Segata1158d ago (Edited 1158d ago )

I love both personally but to be fair the JRPG started out as a Action RPG. Before Enix and Square, Falcom was making Xanadu Ys and Dragon Slayer.

Gamer19821159d ago

why have a list article and only list 4? Not to mention one of those is a free to play not a full jrpg.

Any of these games that do NOT have giggling school girls with questionable attire and waving around huge phallus symbols, represent by huge swords/guns?.

GameBoyColor1158d ago
