Game Idealist takes a look as to whether or not newcomers to the RPG series should play Witcher and Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings before jumping into The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Not so much the Witcher 1, but The Witcher 2 definately. Obviously you don't Have to - but if you've got the time, put it on easy and you can get through both main story paths in about 30-40hrs. It will be a revelation of why the hype is so strong for The Witcher 3! :D If you really want to go deep, read the first book in the series - 'The Last Wish'. It will give you a great introduction to Geralt, the world of the Witcher, and some of the main characters in the game - (background to Yennifer and Ciri mainly), how they first met and how and why they are bound together by destiny.
Although The Witcher 1 was a bit awkward when it came to gameplay. It was still great. So i say if you can play both games then you should.
Witcher 1 is an amazing game. Coupled with high res texture mods, Witcher 1 can still look great.
I'm not sure if I really want to play it even if it was on a humble bundle. I rather watch youtube videos than spend 80 hours minimal to play both games. It's not like there's a dry spell right now. Still got GTAV PC version to play and back log of games.
Witcher 1 takes a while to get into, but it is really rewarding. @Mike you should play them just because they offer different experiences than most games these days.
To clarify, I've played both Wicther 1 and 2 numerous times, and they are among my Best RPG's even ahead of SKyrim. But being that it's only 4 weeks to release, alot of people will not have the time to play through both games before The Witcher 3 drops. SO if the choice is between, Playing Witcher 1, Witcher 2, and reading the books - I would suggest play Witcher 2. Best case scenario is play both AND also read the books, but not alot of people will have the time for that.
The Witcher and The Witcher 2 are two of my favorite games of all time and I'd say anybody should definitely play them if they are able to, but CDPR has apparently made sure that people will be able to jump into the 3rd game with no prior experience and not feel lost.
HELL YES! You very much need to play Witcher 1! I'm playing it right now and its just filled with lore about the world, Witchers, history of elven, dwarves etc. I'm going to only play 2 when I'm done with 1 and ONLY play 3 when I'm done with 2. I mean.....why play the 3rd game in a series? Excited about Witcher 3? Well...find out what you should likely be excited about lol.
i hated the control feel in witcher 1 on my pc,it looked so ugly too. had to stop playing
Loved the feel, never used the WASD to actually move him, just used the traditional point and move feature. Loved the gameplay too, very unique. I was able to play it on high settings pretty easy on my HD 5770 and felt the game looked good enough. I don't play games to just look at them, what the game looks like won't just make me stop playing, I don't think I can say that about any game tbh. How it graphically looked didn't stop me from enjoying it and I feel sorry for anyone that didn't get to experience it because of such a ignorant out look on a game. Its not one the best looking RPGS I've ever seen on PC, but clearly the game makes up for not looking like Skyrim running on the Crysis engine lol.
The Witcher 1 is actually the better game with the more intriguing story line. The only gripe ist the fighting system with takes some getting used to. I liked it better than the one in TW2 nonetheless.
I'm liking the gameplay and production values in TW2 more, I'm playing through the game at the moment, but the original did have a sort of atmosphere to it that will always make it special. So far they are both my two favorite western rpgs, much better than the elder scrolls imo.
I played The Witcher 2 only and I'm perfectly fine with it. I'm hyped for The Witcher 3 because I did some pretty amazing stuff on the second game that felt like I was really important to the outcome of things from the start to specially the end. You basically choose who lives, who dies, if you get your revenge or if you forgive, which faction gets your support, etc. Amazing game. One of the best experiences I had in the past 10 years.
Please....do your self a favor and play Witcher 1, legit one of the best PC titles to release! Very, very, very good. The story is very epic and it sets up a great foundation for the series.
Play Whicher two, there's probably a comic you can read about Whicher one.
Got the Witcher 2 on a XBL $3.49 sale a while back, will play it before I grab part 3
With all the remasters and this would be a one I would get. I've never played the first two games but really like the look of the third one.
I recommend reading all the books as well.
I recommend even of you generally don't game on PC, when you eventually do.....help your self to Witcher 1. Its pretty cheap to get a PC that can play it (if your not looking for next gen level gaming on PC) and its worth the playthrough. Plus to justify the meaty build or purchase, get Pillars Of Eternity, Wasteland 1 and 2, Baldur's Gate Enhanced Editions 1 and 2 and the very first Dragon Age. They are all solid PC rpgs that cater to the wrpg fan. If you like what you see with Witcher 3, support the team and at least play the whole series.
CRPG's are the shit, my friend. Good taste.
Definetely. Can't wait to see how my choices in the first 2 games will impact the 3rd one.
Good luck finishing both in time! Big games are big if you don't rush. Also, Witcher 1 feels pretty outdated by today's standards and may be tough to get into.
You will need 70 hours to finish both of them, you have 30 days till the next one, it's long enough. I've finished them in the past month, it took me tow weeks and I have done almost everything in the 2 games.
it felt to dated to me,couldnt do it.
Played Witcher 2 on 360 ,wouldn't mind a xbox one port of W1 , W2 . I will forgo that want to allow CD Project Red to continue work on Cyberpunk 2077 instead . Reasons small team and new IP.
You guys are killing me! I had totally made peace with jumping into the witcher 3 without having played the first 2 and maybe just watching some YouTube videos. Now reading your comments you all have tapped into my gaming OCD and I feel like I'm going to really be missing out if I don't start from the beginning.
The story will be explained in The Witcher 3 yes, but if you want the best experience then you should play it. I believe you can get both combined with 10$ on PC. So its not much.
"Wild Hunt" has to be the stupidest subtitle ever.
Maybe for those, who have no idea what it means.
And your comment shows your stupidity regarding the Witcher series.
Yes, you should.
I plan to play Witcher 2 eventually. Maybe I'll start it this weekend.
I'm going to be going into The Witcher 3 with no prior experience with the series. I just pre-ordered and paid the game off in full this afternoon. I'm pretty excited for it.
