Tretton: Sony Considering PSP with Harddrive

Kotaku's Brian Crecente writes: "Sony has thought about and continues to play around with the idea of building a Playstation Portable with a built in hard drive or internal memory, Jack Tretton, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, said this morning at a gather of game writers.

"I think we definitely thought about it," he said. "I think that's the trend moving forward."

With the recently announced ability to purchase movies on a Playstation 3 and move them over to a Playstation Portable, and as the cost of memory continues to drop, the chance that a new Playstation Portable would include some sort of internal storage option is becoming increasingly likely, Tretton said."

Could this be the start of PSP2?

That would be great the memory sticks are just not cutting it anymore

well, i dont think an HDD would be good for the PSP, it would make it fatter, not to mention suck the battery life away from the console, i think built in flash memory along the lines of how the Iphone is would be better. but its nice to see that they are listening to us.

They will more then likely use a solid state drive, not the typical hardrives with platters.

Memory sticks not cutting it anymore? 8gigs memory cards are cheap and available, movies on UMD were less than 1.3 gig. Getting multiple 4 gigs would be cheap too...
Monster Hunter 2nd G has HD installs and running off memory sticks are fast enough that there was no need for loading.
Knowing how Kotaku likes to mix and match quotes, this is probably just some BS to bring confusion cuz it's a stupid idea.

id rather have a 2nd anaglog stick. with resistance psp coming out, it would benefit by having tighter controls instead of having more storage space. but then again they might use the hard drive to reduce or get rid of loading times as well as game saves....hmm how bout both? less loading AND tighter controls?

Get out of my head! I was typing the same thing as your post was being made.

iNcRiMiNaTi3805d ago

lol! guess it shows right away i was the only one.

iNcRiMiNaTi3805d ago

meant to put "wasnt* the only one" and i put anaglog on the main post...damn me and typos today. >:(

I don't think they need to move on to the psp2 yet, but an upgraded psp with a hard drive and a second analog stick would get me to turn in my current one for a newer version. I think the hard drive would be a good idea considering the way Sony is pimping the video service and its ability to go portable on the psp, those videos require memory. And when you have music and video along with game saves on your psp, the more space the better.

But if Solid-state drives drop far enough in price by the time PSP 2 comes out (probably in 4 years or so), then it's definitely a possibility.

Can you imagine Handheld Game installations? o_o

the ipod classic has a 160gb HDD. its just a matter of when they decide to use them for handheld gaming

Nitrowolf23805d ago

if indeen they do introduce a HDD to psp i will get one.
But it better be a huge one, i mean im not exspecting a 50GB, mybe around 10-20GB.
and if they do introduse thenhopefully that does not mean Installments for everygame. i can see the installment being small.
Another stick would be awsome, and hopefully if they even do introduse PSP2 they have a big line up of games.
