"EA's free-to-play titles are shutting down in 90 days."
I always meant to check out Battlefield Heroes, but I always ended up turning back to Team Fortress 2. I guess I'm not the only one.
Yeh as far ad f2p goes the only ones I ever find myself going back to are Team Fortress 2 and Robocraft. Grow tired too quickly of everything else.
Good news, free-to-play is bad for gamers.
It was hugely Pay-to-win from the little I played of it.
This marks the end of f2plays ya'alls.
Just simply means EA's cash flow isn't flowing as much as they wanted. This works for sequels but can ruin certain games permanently! I have a friend who recently picked up a PS3 (for the first time) with a bunch of games, one of them being Lord of the Rings Conquest (EA title). She was disappointed to discover that MP in Conquest doesn't work at all. Turns out the servers shut down a long time ago and as a result, MP is completely crippled on consoles (except on PC, via Tunngle).
I'd say the same. I went as far as to get ready/sign up but never got around to actually playing it.
BF heros was garbage and nothing like battlefield.
NfS World closing is actually pretty surprising to me.
It actually wasn't bad for a free to play game. Probably one of the best f2p racing games I've ever played.
From what I heard there was a lot of cheating going on. Maybe there shutting it down due to this?
Such a good feeling to know a game I'm still playing 3 and a half years later is still making enough money to keep going for many years yet :)
No not Fifa World. I was enjoying it more than Fifa 15 .
This is one company that I wish would be gone
Or you can just not purchase their games lol? leave it all for us to enjoy
I dont wish that they were gone but in against many of their practices. Like what they did with BF4 for example or what they did with Hardline. Just because EA gave me Plant Vs Zombies for free I still am able to disagree with them.
clickbait using swtor images when that game is not being taken offline at all.
Doesn't help its tagged either :/
Kinds funny given how the author acts high and mighty on twitter then pulls classic click bait out bahaha
Comon PixelGate you're better than this!
And it's totally acceptable apparently, truly disgusting
Well said. Voting the website down.
Look who submitted it. Not really surprised.
No kidding. SWTOR was ranked 8th on microtransactions last year and made $180 million so it would have been shocking to see it come down.
Good to know that EA is acknowledging FTP is not always a plausible business model.
No business model is always a plausible business model. When was that in question?
True. My statement was only that EA believed f2p was a viable in these situations. shutting these down means they have acknowledged that it f2p is not always good.
Yeah, screw File Transfer Protocol... Oh, you mean Free to Play? Yeah, that too.
Lol Yea ftp has meant nothing at all to computers. Stupid computers
Good!! At least old republic is safe :)
There are still companies out there that look at their monthly numbers and decide to keep a server running even though they've lost the majority of their players. The polar opposite of those companies I speak of would be EA.
Demons Souls servers up and running!
That is exactly what game I was thinking of.
You know, when you're talking about games that are shutting down, you shouldn't put the picture of the one game that's not shutting down up front...
why DIDNT THEY JUST SHUT DOWN SWTOR AND GIVE ME KOTOR 3?!?!?!?!
Maybe they will now? edit: Nevermind...I see SWTOR isn't getting shut down. Nice the article uses SWTOR pic when its not getting touched. lol
Because swtor is great and people like it ? And you should try it, swtor is pretty much kotor 3 (and yeah I played kotor and kotor 2 just weeks before swtor came out). Next time they do a 12x xp event, you should try it.
i have tried it. i have the collectors edition with the darth malgus statue. it fails to live up to what the original kotors did
Would be nice. Meh people like TOR for some reason. Maybe because its the only Star Wars online world out there. Unless your still playing Battlefront or Jedi Knight on PC still. They even brought Revan back to life in TOR apparently without a death in the game as well. So... to me they are leaving the door wide open for KOTOR 3, but they don't wanna do it until after TOR is gone I believe. I think Revan will be the very peak of TOR's online story expansion arcs. Maybe the game will winddown later after that. You know with alot of game focus on The New Era of Star Wars films with Battlefront and likely the Adventure game from Visceral both aiming somewhere in the Newish Old Trilogy era maybe? As far as TOR itself just give it time. It launched in 2011. Free to play model tends to have the same formula. Its great sells for a few years then it dwindles down to nothingness eventually. I don't know any free to play game that has lasted forever yet. I could expect them to release on consoles at some point as well as a possibility to spark Star Wars fans as the new films come about. Although they could have another project in the works for the new Story arc in the new republic era? Just a guess, but I wouldn't say Bioware isn't going to do nothing. I mean you know they did say at the time of license agreement that DICE, Visceral, and Bioware would be working on new Star Wars games. So far we know pretty much what is at DICE, and Visceral. Not a shred of what Bioware could work on outside of TOR just yet. Although clearing out all of the lesser Free to Play game servers likely means they could be thinking about doing a New era Star Wars Free to play game. They don't always use logic in development of games.
Way to go, gameranx. You just earned another WTF? and No from everyone.
why the hell are you guy's using the thumbnail and tag for SWTOR when its not getting shut down? talk about really pathetic click bait.
good as all of them are crap
wow so my 300$ i spent on NFS world is lost with all my moded cars.. dot know what to say lol its EA i know better next time a free to play games comes from them. its been 6 years so i guess that's why
To be honest dude that is the problem You should have thought about before spending the 300. There was no point yoy spent money with nothing to show for it. Even if the game was not shut Down. That is the problem with microtransactions and the free to play model. And people who buy in and justify its existence mean the problem endures.
Just read destiny of spirits from is shutting probably lost sword would be another. It's just the way f2p games work. Also there money grabbers people spend hundred on them just for them shut it down a year later. People are fool to spend money on f2p games.
Look at that clickbait picture.
what do you expect from Ian Miles Cheong
EDIT: Apparently N4G needs to fix their title description for this story because it is wrong.
Excellent....NOW JUST STICK TO SELLING ME MY F%CKING GAME, WHOLE, COMPLETE, CAMPAIGN, ONLINE...etc, etc... Just sell the damn things at retail (or digitally), the way we've always be used to BUYING something... All this other shite, just feels like I'm renting my games. And, get Respawn to add single player campaigns to there future titles (inclusive of Titanfall 2).....as they need to put in a little f^cking effort, if they want us to keep forking out for there samely online experiences.... F2P or P2W, just be rid of them.. If a game is worth the time, then the $30-$40 will be an easy sell to most of the dedicated players, if not all, plus the casual, blow in's. And, as far as these damn ONLINE ONLY games,......screw that, I now have a nice pile of PS3 games, that are now coasters, thanks to this practice many developers took last gen. Socom: Confrontation & MAG are 2 that instantly come to mind....BUT, I know there are way more in my collection, and even more again, that are not... I also know, 360 has the same problem with many games (I don't think I own any, as my 360 was not my main choice console, just for exclusives, didn't want to pay for Gold.. hopefully never will). I just wish these publishers & developers would concentrate on delivering us awesome games, rather than spending that time, devising ways to rip us off even more, of our hard earned cash. I mean, if the film industry did this, it would be dead in the water.. Imagine you pay $15 to see a movie, then 35mins in, it pauses & asks for more money, to see the more action packed, bigger gunned, version of the film...WTF???? That is what you'd think....So, why are we not having the same response with our games.... Ultimately, Craptivision started all this money milking, by releasing 3/4's of COD's online experience...Then charging us $22au, 4weeks later, for a 2mg download of maps, OBVIOUSLY already on the disk. Then throw Crapcom into the mix of rip off artists, as they are a force to be reckoned with...& the sh1t has just exploded to epidemic proportions from there.. If it's not F2P, it's an uncomplete bug riddled nightmare of BF4 proportions, & a 50gig update is required, before you even start the damn game....then if not that, then we get another damn remake, & if not that, it is a remake of a remake...and the worst part is, I am not making this up, or exaggerating it too much, in any way. In fact, Resident Evil 1 is probably a remake of a remake of a remake of a remake of the original... I mean, this game has been re-released more times than an Elvis hit...
@the negative F2P ideas, I don't see how the comments of doom and gloom for F2P apply here with all the games being over 4-5 years old other than FIFA World. This appears to be spring cleaning more than EA making a stance against F2P. Related is that Microsoft appears as if they're going to use F2P to leverage getting people involved with cross-play, cross-buy, and (Universal) Windows Apps. This GameSpot article from July 2013 indicates that has long been Microsoft's plan for getting as many people as possible to use their new technology (also the reason for Windows 10 being free), http://www.gamespot.com/art... F2P lets Microsoft show their latest DX12\XBox\Windows 10 tech for free as they're deploying a MASSIVE amount of new functionality and features. Not only does that give Microsoft great publicity, since they'll be free to try, people can't complain as much if there are issues to start with plus Microsoft will get the largest audience and most feedback possible for improving what comes next. Of course, as excellent as all that is, naysayers will spin it all as negatively as possible while glorifying what else that is worse, probably in hypocritical ways, as happens a lot with Microsoft naysaying such as how MS gave OEMs the option to lock Windows 10 to the hardware with Secure Boot the way (Windows, Android, and iOS) phones already work and the way that NIX OSes, such as SteamOS, already allow OEMs to do(?) IF they wanted, as far as I know. Expect naysayers to doom and gloom Microsoft F2P games while the F2P games on their preferred platform get a free pass.
this news has saddened me. i spent a lot of time playing bf heroes and bf play4free while waiting for bf3. didn't spend any money, but that didn't keep me from kicking ass.
This is actually rather upsetting to me as I personally loved battlefield heroes :(
