Super Mario 64 is available on Wii U's Virtual Console service. Join Jose Otero and Brendan Graeber, as they poke around to checkout all the features of the VC version.
I wish they would have talked more about the raw performance of the emulator. It appears that it's being rendered in a higher resolution than the original 240i. This footage looks like 480p with a slightly smoother frame rate (in which I'm thankful, many N64 games ran under 30fps). There doesn't appear to be any texture filtering going on. The entire image seems to be darkened so that the white points have been reduced to a broadcast-safe grey, probably for people prone to epileptic seizures. I wonder why Nintendo didn't just bump it all the way up to 1080p. If my phone can handle it, the Wii U should have no problem.
Well if course it's not going to be 240i.... Can the Wii even output that?? I think 480i/p is the lowest..
I also noticed how much darker it looks. Other that that it's great. Love to play mario64 on the gamepad.
