Gabe Newell: going back to a classic kind of product seems like a bad choice

Gabe Newell of Valve shared a similar sentiment with regards to a Half-Life sequel. "The only reason we'd go back and do like a super classic kind of product is if a whole bunch of people just internally at Valve said they wanted to do it and had a reasonable explanation for why [they did]. But you know if you want to do another Half-Life game and you want to ignore everything we've learned in shipping Portal 2 and in shipping all the updates on the multiplayer side, that seems like a bad choice," he said.

ok lets play... so that means also no L4D3, no Portal 3 etc right Gabe?

NuggetsOfGod876d ago (Edited 876d ago )

Valve time and the twilight zone are no different.

I think valve really want half life 3 to be revolutionary.

All this silence and now htc vive, source 2 based on Vulkan news out of nowhere lol

Gabe really seems like a cool dude and his patience seems god like.

Valve doesn't really compete they just do great things on their own time.

They are kind of in a league of their own.

This is probably why steam box can't over take consoles.

The down side of not rushing things.

One thing is for sure a free source 2 is awsome!!

This I think will be the engine hl3 will be built on!

But from what he's saying, it seems Valve run on intuition lol

If you take his remarks and accept the fact a "whole bunch of people just internally at Valve said they wanted to do it" then everything else falls easily into place.

methegreatone876d ago

Isn't it more or less confirmed that the next Half Life is in the works ? Whatever stage it's at.

hiredhelp877d ago

There have been devs who have left over this laid back Gabe to wanting to be creative.
Whenever fans try push him about HL3 he shuts them down yet he has a milti billion digital distribution service. He has employees that willing to work hard create great games he doesnt have to lift a finger..
Fedup with rebranded counter strikes yes i know DOTA is huge but you cant sit on your ------ ignore your fans.
Shipping lol Joke right.. Right?

jairusmonillas876d ago

CS and Dota is way bigger than Half Life.

hiredhelp876d ago

That maybe i agree but counter strike which started out as a HL mod funny enough along with DOTA online MP were HL many play it for the campign too.
Btw im not knocking Dota or CS Dota have them both infact not valve game i havent got.
Just wish gabe let his team work on games rather than the odd revamp.
Or source 3 engine.

Rimeskeem877d ago

I'm getting tired of this. I wish Gabe could just tell us what is happening in game development (if anything).

TheCommentator877d ago

I used to admire him for his cutting edge game design, but now he's abandoning us for the $$ in his wallet. He does know we're the reason he's gotten rich so he should show some gratitude and finish the Half Life series as promised to his fans 10 years ago. He owes us that.

NecotheSergal876d ago

Just because he's taking his sweet time doesn't mean your hyperbole assumptions are accurate nor that he deserves your self-entitled whining.

You don't pay him, he can go at whatever pace he feels like. If he gets screwed over then he's at fault, but he's not. So you stopped admiring someone because of such petty reasons, bravo. You 'feel abandoned' by a game developer who doesn't work fast enough for you, lmao.

TheCommentator876d ago

So I'm making assumptions that Gabe said revisiting a classic would be a bad idea unless a whole bunch of people that work for him had a reasonable explanation as to why they should?

...and I'm self entitled? I must've misunderstood when Gabe said he was going to release a new Half Life episode about every 6 months until the game was completed? That episodic content would shorten the wait for gamers to finish the story? It's been a decade and the best you could come up with is "doesn't work fast enough for you"? You must have incredibly low expectations.

What I feel about his conduct is not petty, but I'm not writing you an essay about it to prove a point. Why are you so angry about my post anyways? Your personal attack is unwarranted and juvenile.

SteamPowered876d ago

Yes, the grandfather of Steam owes you half life 3.....

I'm more than happy with Valves other projects such as VR, Vive, steamOS, OpenGL, and of course the Steam service itself.

Pandamobile876d ago (Edited 876d ago )

Gabe Newell is not a game designer. He's the managing director.

TheCommentator876d ago

Yes, of a team of individuals that designed cutting edge games. That makes him responsible for the direction of his staff and the games they make.

-Foxtrot877d ago (Edited 877d ago )

The way they've treated Half Life has been ridiculous, I wouldn't mind if the story was finished but it's not.

Every time people think "Oh great Valves release slate is clearing up, time to focus on Half Life" they end up announcing something else which despite sounding cool it's not something people are crying out for.

Team Fortress 2 updates/short films, Portal 2, DoTA 2, L4D stuff, Counter Strike GO, Steam Living Room, J. J. Abrams collaboration, Greenlight, Steam Machines, the controller, Steam OS, VR etc

Half life is the game which put Valve on the map, now all they care about is online games

I love what Valve have made and done for us but they are turning into a shadow of their former selfs. How can people keep defending them

bennissimo876d ago

Exactly.

Gabe Newell is the Darth Sidious of gaming for me. I'll never see a resolution to HL2, not to mention a proper sequel, all because this blowhard thinks he's the god of gaming.

I know I shouldn't care so much. But it's HIS FREAKING GAME that made me care about it.

Now I'm going to shout all sorts of stuff that N4G would ding me for.

NarooN876d ago

Think about all the HL fans out there in the world that literally died before they could see the resolution of the story. I mean, really. That's how much time has passed, that probably hundreds, if not thousands of HL fans have died from various causes before they could see how the series (or at least HL3/EP3) ended. All because glorious lord Gaben wants to take his sweet time because he knows for a fact that no matter what they do with HL3, it won't live up to the insane expectations that the game has simply BECAUSE of how long it's been in development.

Valve are pretty much a joke at this point. inb4 Valve/Steam apologists

Pandamobile876d ago

Valve operates in way unlike any other company in the industry. They work on whatever interests them. Right now that means pushing PC gaming into new frontiers with Steam VR and the living room stuff, as well as creating vast ecosystems for user generated content in Team Fortress 2 and DOTA2.

Valve have been doing single player games for almost 20 years. It's not unreasonable to assume that they're a bit bored of it by now and want to pursue other things.

-Foxtrot876d ago

Valve are so slow though that they haven't made enough solid single player games to get bored.

Half Life, Half Life 2, Episode 1 & 2, Portal.....please remember that the episodes and Portal were kind of short.

That's it...everything else has Co-op or multiplayer involved. Not really a lot to get bored with

Pandamobile876d ago (Edited 876d ago )

They're slow because they take their time when they do things. When you're not constrained by budget or publisher pressure, you can afford to go out of your way to make sure that your games are as close to perfect as they can be.

That's why Half-Life 2 took 7 years to make (and was basically scrapped and restarted at one point). That's why Team Fortress 2 took 10 years to make.

Their games these days are built around creating communities. Single player games don't generate the same sort of community involvement that multiplayer does.

Valve tends to look at the broader scope of things than other developers, which is why they've shifted their focus from making games to facilitating community involvement in as many games as they can on Steam.

Yeah, it sucks that we still don't have a conclusion to Half-Life 2, but I still appreciate all the awesome stuff that Valve has done and continues to do with Steam VR, their efforts with recent API overhauls, Source Filmmaker, TF2 and DOTA2.

bennissimo876d ago

Everything Valve does is a joke now, simply because they made the conscious decision to screw over the fans that gave them their success in the first place.

I'd wish ill on Gabe Newell, but given his physical state, it seems he's wishing ill enough on himself.
