If you loves games like Contra and Metroid then Axiom Verge is a must buy for all PS4 owners.

It definitely looks like something special. That Metal Slug 3 looks like a treat for Contra fans as well. Those two & Shovel Knight are all on my playlist most definitely. I like my platformer/shooters more linear, I couldn't really get into Mercenary Kings' timed mission based/high score deal & procedurally generated stuff like Rogue Legacy kills the enjoyment of learning a game like the back of your hand w/ multiple playthroughs. They are both great & worthy titles for many players, just not my cup of tea. I'm hoping Axiom has a bit of a storyline & defined levels to go along w/ the Metroidvania approach.

Rogue Legacy is f**king fantastic. I was skeptical about it at first too, but I kept playing and thought it was great.

It does have a story. It's really good and there's a lot to explore. You won't be disappointed.

Im gonna try Axiom Verge (because im a huge fan of metroidvania games) but isnt anyone else getting tired of intentionally ugly games that are ugly just for the sake of looking retro?

Indie games dont have to look ugly - journey and ori come to mind. I grew up with the NES and it was great back then but thats because thats the best they could do.

I think for a lot of these devs retro has just become an excuse for when they dont have the talent to pull off something attractive.
