"We are not fans of the whole 'cinematic experience'," says Daniel Ström , CEO of Guru Games.
lol.. I don't even know what .. I guess they chose frame-rates over resolution. That butter-smooth 60 frames.. good trade-off. your game, your choice.
I respect this developer for bucking the trend and going for performance as their most important goal. I hope this game does really well. Not so that we get more 720p games, but that performance becomes more prominent and important than resolution. To bad it is not my type of game. They have the performance and will try to up resolution. But if the resolution starts to impact performance, they leave the game at 720p and give us some improved effects instead.
"Not so that we get more 720p games" Isnt battlefield hardline 720p on XBox one? Its just the start of the gen, all developers have been busy with is making cross gen games designed for last gen consoles or making remakes. Once true next gen games roll out and graphics are pushed you will see a trend of more and more games being 720p to 900p initially later on probably 720p on consoles. Sony and Ms cheaped out there is no eluding this.
@ decrypt Is that why we have Infamous Second Son, Driveclub, Bloodborne, Shadow Of Mordor, The Order 1886, Until Dawn, Forza Horizon 2 and other current gen titles at 1080p? How about Sunset Overdrive, Ryse, Quantum Break, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Halo 5 at 900p or above. 720p will never be a thing with current gen exclusives. Dead Rising 3 was a bad apple.
what always suprises me in these Res Vs Framerate stories is just how many people are willing to give up gameplay for slightly better graphics .
*sigh* Maybe I should turn in my 1080p TV in favor of a 720. Then this wouldn't be an issue, lol.
@bleedsoe9mm By that thought we should have just stuck with PS3 and Xbox 360, since all i am seeing is a slight graphics upgrade with current gen over last gen. Nothing the PS4 or Xbox one have shown us couldnt have been possible on last gen. Last gen consoles were powerful enough to do pretty much most of what the PS4 and Xbox one can except with graphics turned down of course. No one here is saying gameplay should be compromised, its just that Sony and MS made claims for a 1080p 60fps gen and so far tbh i think they are failing at it. More MS than Sony, but yea both are pretty much failing.
I've seen playthrough gameplay on this and it literally looks like poop visually. I'm sorry, but it does. It should be running at 1080p 120fps on both consoles in all honesty with how poor the graphics are. And I'm not seeing anything else that would take up a bunch of resources either. It looks like a two generation old remaster that would have been released last-gen. Lazy developers imo.
@ T900 "all i am seeing is a slight graphics upgrade with current gen over last gen. " Are you having a laugh pal? If games like Killzone Shadow Fall, Driveclub, Forza Horizon 2, Ryse, The Order 1886, Infamous Second Son, Alien Isolation, Shadow of Mordor, Metro Redux, Call of Duty Advanced Warfare, Grand Theft Auto V, Far Cry 4, Dying Light, UFC and The Last of Us only have a "slight" graphical upgrade in comparison to their last-gen counterparts then I must suggest that you go and have your eyes checked. If you can't see the difference between last/current gen, your analysis and critique on resolution and visual fidelity should not be taken seriously. "Nothing the PS4 or Xbox one have shown us couldnt have been possible on last gen. Last gen consoles were powerful enough to do pretty much most of what the PS4 and Xbox one can" Again, I don't know if it's ignorance or arrogance but that statements is outright wrong. The nemesis system from Shadow of Mordor, first person view & 32 players online in GTA V, particle effects in infamous Second Son, the batmobile and the seamless open world design in Batman Arkham Knight, the bustling crowd in Watchdogs, the huge number of different animations in Uncharted 4 and Quantum Breaks time manipulation would be impossible to achieve on last gen.
@Genuine-User What he thinks is that the games will improve graphically as the gen goes on and the devs will compensate by lowering the resolution or frame-rates. I disagree because if you look at Ps2, Xbox, XBox 360, PS3 all of them had much better looking games at the later parts of the generation, which ran at the same technical specs of the early games.
Shouldn't the more powerful ps4 have higher resolution than the xbox one
@Cindy, Just as the developer isn't a fan of the cinematic experience, neither do they like pushing each piece of hardware to its relative limit. And looking at the design and gameplay, it is apparent they also have some degree of disdain for an original idea as well.
Really, you cant get this http://store.steampowered.c... to run at anything higher than 720p? You should have your developing license taken away from you (figuratively speaking), pathetic! Listen I know these systems are weak, pathetically weak but come on im sure even they could get this piece of junk to run at 1080/60fps. This whole gen is starting to come of like a quick cash grab.
Just because the game is 60 fps, doesn't mean it will be fun. It could be crap regardless of specs.
@Blurmobje Yeah but doesn't your 1080p TV also refresh at 60 hz? Maybe we should trade our TVs for 30 hz ones as well and not go any higher. /s
Well at least they are doubling the framerate from the 30fps it had on the PS3 and 360. Oh wait, I thought this was a stripped down version of Portal 2 without the humor or inventiveness.
After watching the trailer of this game it seemed like a B-rated movie. Worth playing, yes. I don't expect it to be as polished as Portal.
They chose frame-rate over everything I guess. It looks like an early last gen game, minus the 1080p resolution. See for yourself - https://www.youtube.com/wat...
Which, considering they couldn't get a game with mediocre visuals running at 1080p/60, shows their lack of skill.
Seems that's an Alpha version, maybe they can do more nearer a proper version over this Alpha footage
If killzone shadowfall single player could have been 1080p 30fps then there is no way in hell they should not have been able to get that to 1080/60 at least on the ps4. Either those guys are not at the top of their game or they are lazy and just trying to get this game out as quickly as possible.
A very average looking game graphically. I think they are doing 720p because they don't want to spend time optimizing for a higher resolution. It just reeks of mediocrity.
Metro Redux runs at 1080/60 and looks far, far better than this game. Just goes to show how much the developer's talent and understanding of their engine plays into this.
Honestly, bloodborne is 1080p and 30fps. Why does the order have to be brought up? No game has to be more precise than BB, and I would NEVER trade 1080 on that game for 60fps. On the other hand,we will get both with Dark Soul's 2...so then we can compare. It's each game on its own merit. If devs think fps is more important to gameplay, and graphics aren't the selling point, then so be it. But, w the Order, the issue wasn't fps or resolution. It was lack of additional gameplay, trophies for replayability etc. The story and cinematic were amazing! I wouldn't change that aspect. But I love how he fit it in as if it had anything to do w Magnetics choice.
I understand that they are indie developers. Very small team, small budget... Magnetic isn't graphical demanding game. I mean WTF? Really weird.
Thank goodness. Finally a dev with some sense of what people or real gamers would prefer. Cinematic? 30 fps? Lmfao, anyone that ever bought that excuse is a great example of the sheer pliability of bending the human mind to prefer a clear negative.
that's bc framerate is always better than resolution.
"your game, your choice" Agreed. Many need to understand that frame rate and resolution are GAME DEPENDENT, not system dependent. The developer is making the choice to do this. Has nothing to do with whether they can or can't or whether PS4 or XONE can or can't. With all quality, settings, features etc aside, just res and frame is something any system can do in 1080p 60fps if your not factoring in the above. Its a something on console that developers choose.
720p on the ps4? This is madness. The impossible will now be possible.
I don't understand how they can't get this game to rut at 1080/60fps on both current gen console. Everything from the geometry to the shading screams average, have a look - https://www.youtube.com/wat...
most likely a "parity" problem...
The game looks like an XBLA / PSN arcade game :s
Well, to be fair it is currently in Alpha. So what we see now is not guaranteed to be how it looks at release. Doesn't mean that it will change, but that it is pointless to judge when the game is not complete.
? Who said they can't? How do you know this wasn't a choice to merely not do 1080p? Resolution and frame is game dependent and developer dependent. The choose those things on console... Mind you...all quality and settings aside, getting 1080p 60fps isn't something that is that hard as all you have to do is lower enough settings to get it, its not something that is challenging, in fact....its just the opposite. Its much easier to lower settings and strip features for 1080p, then to have a demanding engine at 800p.
Game doesn't look like my cup of tea but doesn't look too graphically demanding, probably could've pushed for a higher res on both systems but probably limited as a small studio
I would have bashed the Xbox for this low resolution , but since my ps4 will be the same I feel good. Resolution doesn't matter ps4 master race
I watched the vid above that genuine-user gave the link to - if this is how this game will play, the only reason I'd want to play is if I had trouble sleeping -it could be 120FPS and it'd still be one of the most mind-numbingly BORING game vids I've ever watched.
refreshing take on gaming, nice to see, 60fps over 1080peeees any day thumbs up for you sir
how is it refreshing when 1080p and 60 fps for this game should be easily achievable.Laziness is a refreshing thing?
tell you what isnt refreshing?, complaining
first 720p game on PS4?
I'm speechless... XD
Apparently not fans of optimization either.
PC Master Race wins again!
It really doesn't. The PC has close to zero triple a exclusives.
What? The PC has more games, better games and the best versions of multiplats. As for exclusives check STEAM. There is no comparison. Haters gonna hate!
best version to me is highly subjective
Lol PC has more AAA and normal exclusives than all the consoles but together dopey. How many AAA's does PS4 have? 4 ? Lol.. Nice name too.. a bit fanboyish dont you think?
Wow, your comment is so ignorant... @gamingtruth, in every article that puts X1 against ps4, ps4 is the "better version" because it typically runs at a higher resolution. Except when PC is thrown in the mix, then it is "subjective". /whatever #fanboydoublestandArds
Have fun playing Butt Sniffing Pugs , while we are playing Bloodborne :p PC has some great stuff , but so does console.
I said the same thing to Konami and any developer who can't get 900p or higher on both the PS4 and XB1 hardware. They should just give up on developing games altogether. This is just sad. Just a poor developer who doesn't have the know how.
loool they should aim for 900p, 720p is so meh.
Yuck, I don't care if they downgrade the graphics to achieve 60 fps, but 720p is a blurry mess. Would much rather prefer plain graphics at 1080p at 60 fps rather than good graphics ruined by excessive upscaling.
Dem GameCube graphics tho
Battlefield 4 runs better than this game and looks leagues better on both consoles. You know you done f*cked up when you're worse at coding than EA. Lol Even Witcher 3 runs 1080p 30fps on PS4 and 900p 30fps on XBO. And that was the build in January. http://www.gamespot.com/art... 720p is unacceptable.
So damn lazy of them not to take advantage of both consoles. Just lazy i tell ya!
Is it a good game? Or do all we care about is Rez and FPS? The Order was REALLY good looking - and yet a critical and commercial flop! LOL Remy! You want Rez over gameplay and graphics features!
Shouldn't we be able to have games that not only play well but look well. It's not the 720p that's the issue. Its the lack of visual fidelity paired with that 720p that's the problem.
Welcome to the old gen! Mh... wait... Are they talking about PS4 and Xbone? Oh.... Well... Mh... i don't know what to say, maybe good they chose fps over resolution? I'd prefer both but... mh...
wow I just saw the trailer of this game and it looks like crap!, I don't see any reason why it wouldn't run at full HD and 60 fps easily. here is the trailer if you don't believe me: http://store.steampowered.c... Put some efforts on this game you lazy devs bastards!! lol
This is nothing more than a developers way of trying to inconspicuously try to push parity! It's pretty obvious that the game is not resource intensive. And history has already proven that both the Xbox 1 and PS4 have already released games that require alot more grunt to run at higher fps as well as a higher resolution. Hell the WII U could run this at the highest settings.
Apart from the res, let me point out something here... "Frankly speaking, not every game needs to be “cinematic” and most actually tend to suffer from trying to be like their big screen counterpart. Need I remind you of the recent mixed bag that was The Order: 1886?" What does RaD's aspect ratio choice have to do with M:GC's framerate choice? Throwing another dev that had a completely different perspective under the bus shows a growing lack of journalistic integrity around here...
"Cinematic" is just code word for "machine not powerful enough to run without black bars". Only those in denial will disagree me.
"Cinematic" is just code word for "machine not powerful enough to run without black bars". Oh...I agree with you! ;) it still doesnt explain what is so visually taxing about this game that it runs at 1080P. I could understand if it was battlefield, but game does not look like much in the first place.
"Not a fan of cinematic experiences" OK have fun missing out on some of the best games ever like Uncharted, TLOU, and MGS.
Was referring to screen ratio and movie fps, not the content.
